In reality, Floyd may have beaten Duran at welter/light middle. I don't know much about Aaron Pryor, other than he beat Arguello twice.
After all, Kirkland Laing beat Duran, Wilfred Benitez did and Duran pulled a no mas against Leonard. Other than that, Floyd would be an underdog against the other guys. Leonard and Hearns, those guys would have beaten Mayweather at welter. Roy Jones was better p4p than Mayweather I feel. Whitaker would probably have beaten Mayweather as well, very elusive, quick and a southpaw.
If Savon had turned pro, he would have been fighting in the 90's and the days of Holyfield, Moorer, Bowe, Lewis, Tyson. If he had been a contender, it would have interesting, that's for sure. I doubt he would have dominated, he may or may not have won a title, he'd probably have been KO'd a few times as well. I would take Lewis or Holyfield to have beaten him. Bowe made mincemeat of Gonzalez. As did a few other guys. Great amateurs do not always make great pros.
Yeah, I'm quite interested in following Povetkin's progress. He's done nicely up to now, got some names on his record. The fight against Bostice was probably his best so far. I'm not convinced he'll be as successful as many people think however. I don't think he'll dominate the division, that's for sure. He seems a bit open defense wise and isn't all that big compared to many guys out there. All in all, so far, so good though and he's a decent bet to win a title, given there's four of them out there.
Boxing was way different then, but Jack Dempsey may be a tad over rated by historians, considering he didn't defend his title for a spell of three years from 1923- 26 and then got beat by Tunney twice.
I think Jack was a big star of his day, Hollywood, first million dollar gate and all that, but he never met guys like Harry Wills either and had a number of losses and draws on his record, several to some guy named Willie Meehan.
I'm not knocking the guy too much, that was the sport in his day, only developing in the modern world, but I'm not sure he deserves to be rated so highly by the old timers.
I don't know, I saw an article the other day on another site and in that, Calzaghe was quoted as saying he might fight on until he's 40! :)
Match against Kessler would be good and if successful, a move up to light heavy might be on the cards. Joe says he wants to win a title at two weights.
Mundine's quite good but Kessler has already beaten him. He'd do it again. Calzaghe would also beat him. With those two guys in the division, Mundine is just another alphabet champ.
Mundine v Soliman looked like a light heavy against a middleweight. Soliman had nothing to hurt Mundine with.
Yeah, I was a Ray Leonard fan. He was a great boxer. The Hagler-Leonard fight was massive back then and I wanted Leonard to win it. Nowadays, I would appreciate Hagler more as a down to earth guy.
This fella had Rocky winning nearly of them, didn't he?:D Marciano was a great alright and undefeated, but I don't know about him KO'ing all them other top boxers.
I think he would have tipped Rocky to KO Godzilla :)
I think Joe will beat Kessler as well, assuming the fight's made of course:)
After that, I think he'd carry on for a while and maybe go for a title at light heavy.
Bute is quite good. I saw the fight against Tatevosyan and he had things his own way against a smaller guy though. He went 12 rounds. Froch has just stopped Tatevosyan in 2.
Bute is taking on Sakio Bika next I think and if he wins that, then he's in line for some kind of title fight I guess. Bika is a rough handful and durable, so Bute's in line to go rounds there again.
Bute's OK, but I ain't gonna go mad and say he's great yet.
I would give Evander a decent chance of beating Briggs, he might throw too many punches for Shannon and he still has a sound chin. I don't think he would beat Valuev or Wlad Klitschko. Maskaev I don't know, possibly Holyfield has a chance, but I'd favour Maskaev.
If Calzaghe beats Manfredo, Kessler next would be great. Either in the UK or the US. I'd prefer a neutral venue myself so everything is as fair as can be.
Wlad will never be feared like Mike Tyson was in his prime. Wlad is too vulnerable and been sparked a few times by guys he was heavily favoured to beat.
I rate Wlad as a good boxer who can punch as well, he's got the height and reach to do damage from distance. He has the right to be ranked no.1 HW today, I suppose. If he unifies a couple of the belts at least and goes unbeaten for an extended spell like Lennox Lewis, he'll have the right to be in the HOF legitimately. He's pretty good, but all time great? He's got a bit to do yet.
Joe should have fought in the States years ago. Eric Lucas would just have been another name for Joe, he's beaten better guys than Eric Lucas. Ottke? Calzaghe would more than likely have beaten him. He didn't want to risk getting robbed in Germany though. The WBA title was swapping around fairly regularly. No dominant champion there.
Same with the WBC. Woodhall? Calzaghe beat him. Reid? Calzaghe beat him, narrowly. Catley? Joe would have beaten him. Lucas? Calzaghe would have beaten him.
Obviously, Roy Jones v Calzaghe a few years back would have been good, but Jones went up to light heavy and Calzaghe was happy at super middle. Jones would have won imo.
Glenn Johnson went up to light heavy as well. Joe would probably have beaten him at super middle.
Beyer was another name out there. Again, Joe would probably have been favoured to beat him.
Lacy? He was the 'next big thing'. Calzaghe trounced him.
Kessler v Calzaghe is the best fight out there at 168 lbs. Whether it's made, who knows?
Miranda only really got himself to blame though. If he had kept a cooler head, he wins the fight imo. He had broken Abraham's jaw unknown to him, and then he goes and uses the head in close. Big stoppage in the fifth and points deduction. Abraham's corner team keeps him in the fight during the intervals. What I didn't get was all the consulting by the supervisors and ref in the fifth. It seemed to favour Abraham. Then again he had been fouled.
When the fight continues, Miranda keeps hitting low and loses more points. I thought the fight was fairly even, Miranda was the aggressor but Abraham was landing the cleaner shots imo on the defensive. Abraham gets another rest in the eleventh I think from another low blow. Miranda isn't going to get any favours in Germany and I think he got caught up in the occasion too much. They had words in the build up to the bout and it was a nasty match at times. If Miranda fights fair, he wins but he didn't really.
Rocky DOES belong in the HOF. Don't like people doing down the great fighters and icons of the past. He was the HW champ of the world for 4 years and was never beaten. God Bless.
I prefer your boxer/technical type of guy as opposed to the slugger. For instance I scored for Toney against Peter 8 rounds to 4. I like Ali compared to Frazier, Tunney to Dempsey, you get the picture.
I don't think Arturo Gatti should be boxing any more. He's been in so many tough fights, his family and team behind him should be advising him to hang em up imo.
Markus Beyer was pretty handy a few years back, seen him whupping Richie Woodhall good and even now he must have something, but I think Kessler's gonna beat him well. If Kessler's as good as they say he is.
