WBC order Peter to face Toney again
By Ray Kilgore: Promoter Dan Goossen has informed this reporter that he just received word that the WBC has mandated a rematch between the highly controversial fight involving James "Light's Out" Toney and Samuel Peter.
In an excellent heavyweight bout to effectively determine the WBC No.1 contendership position, Peter took a split decision off Light's Out in Los Angeles on September 2, with scores of 116-111 twice to a 112-115 scoreline which favoured Toney.
Now Goossen says he will start planning the details of the fight in the weeks to come.
What makes you think the fight won't happen?
....Call it a hunch. If it does happen then both guys better be in respectable shape and one of them needs to make a definitive statement.
i'd be happy to watch a rematch.. to complainers, what else can be made right now in the heavyweight division that's available currently????
already in motion:
Klitschko? Wladimir Klitschko-Calvin Brock
Lyakhovich? Serguei Lyakhovich-Shannon Briggs
Valuev? Nikolay Valuev-Monte Barrett
Maskaev? now planning on fighting Peter Okhello in December
this is the BEST option to go to the rematch in the near-future
Klitschko-Brock is a good fight I dont know what your problem is, also Lykhovich-Briggs is also a good fight and the Peter-Toney rematch just adds to these good fights...
....Your absolutely right. I have a funny feeling that this fight won't come off by the way.
Thanks. It just doesn't make any sense to me, really. There have been worse decisions and it's not like Toney's not going to get another title shot.....there are four titlists out there for crying out loud.
Incidentally, I know it won't happen; but after each of these guys make there next defense, they really ought to be focusing on putting Humpty Dumpty (The Title) back together again, IMHO.
I thought it was a good match in spurts, and if the rematch comes off without being a PPV I will likely tune in.
I had Peter winning because he was overall more effective and busy, but I had it closer than the judges, too. I just think the WBC is overstepping and doing this for another sanctioning fee on what they hope is a bigger purse fight. It has nothing to do with the judges.
or people who don't want to see Mêlée at The Buffet II.
that's kind of irrelevant with this rematch.. the reason they're doing it was the obvious bad call by the judges. And some of you people are acting like these two were hugging and holding the entire fight, when in truth, it was a pretty decent match.
did you shut off your tv right before Lennon Jr. announced the scores or something? maybe just didn't even watch and read the results on the net..
The only people i can see honestly not liking this news are Sam Peter fans..

This is bullshit. I don't see why they just don't move along in the heavyweight decision. A mandatory fight at the end of the day is a mandatory fight. Winner moves on, I don't get why there is a rematch. If Peter can't fight Maskaev that doesn't mean he needs to fight Toney.

 This is such bullshit.
I had Toney winning; but come on! I hate political b.s. like this....I really do. :purity:

thats weak, more waste of time at the heavyweight division. We all know whats gonna happen, Toney is gonna come in over weight... again and then he is gonna get robbed .... again. :nonono:
here's the press release:
WBC Approves Toney vs Peter Rematch
The WBC Board of Governors approved by a vote of 21 to 10 the immediate rematch between Samuel Peter and James Toney, after their first bout which Peter won by split decision on September 2 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
The World Boxing Council has always supported the decisions made by its ring officials and it will continue to do so. This approval of a rematch in no way questions the decision of September 2.
There were several reasons why the WBC made this decision:
1. First, for having been an extremely close fight which divided the opinions of the media and fans. This rematch will clear the air and we will have an official undisputable challenger to our new champion Oleg Maskaev.
2. The WBC believes that at this moment there can not be a more interesting heavyweight fight than this rematch. There is a huge public demand for this rematch and it will be very good for the promoters, as well as the prestige and the importance of boxing in the world.
James Toney was No. 1 ranked official challenger and he had no need to fight anyone to gain the right to contend for the title. By choosing Samuel Peter, the highest rated boxer adopted a top-level sports decision and the WBC wishes that the official challenger be the winner of this rematch so nobody has doubts about it.
The World Boxing Council decided, however, that should a purse offer be necessary for this rematch, the purse will be divided 55 percent for Samuel Peter and 45 percent for James Toney.
Samuel Peter spoke with me about his respect for the decision made by the WBC; he also stated that even though he wants to fight for the title immediately, he will accept the rematch to show once again his merits to contend for the title.
The WBC invites all parties to kindly restrain from using a hard language in their public statements, since boxing is a sport for gentlemen and we all would like to keep it that way.
*btw, i'm all for this rematch, can't understand why so many people are complaining about this..
Even though I don't agree with the WBC's decision to order a rematch like the majority of posters on boxingscene, I think that this fight should happen because of all the questions Toney-Peter I left unanswered.
A rematch is intreguing because both fighters hopefully learnt alot from the first fight and will have to go into the second fight with a 'revised' fightplan.
For Toney; he needs to come into the fight in better shape(I know, same old story) and needs to stay busier throughout the fight and dominate Peter more than he did the first time.
For Peter; he needs be in better condition and he needs to throw more (accurate and straight!) jabs and hooks, and also should hit Toney more in the body.
All-in-all, I think this fight proves to be just as entertaining as the first one if not more.
I can't believe there are people upset with this.
Maskaev's being allowed a BS defense in Russia, so Peter can't fight him anytime soon anyway.
The scores of 9 rounds to 3 for Peter in that fight were enough to label it a very contraversial fight, and it's no secret an overwhelming amount of fans and media thought Toney won.
A rematch would be a good call, especially with the WBC titled tied up with Maskaev's optional defense.
