Mayweather is not quite as famous as Tyson or Ali but he is close and he lacks a couple of things that Tyson and Ali had.
1) Time-as stated by others Tyson and Ali were both famous and hated during their times but views of them softened as time passed and looking at them in hindsight improved their standing in the eyes of the public as will Floyd's standing improve with time.
2) Being humbled-Both Ali and Tyson were humbled by tremendous a$$ whippings toward the end of their careers and for some haters seeing that lessened the hatred and made them more able to humanize these larger than life figures.
Floyd never got that and some haters still have a flaming hatred of him because they never got to see him humbled. That burning hatred will keep the anti-Floyd crowd posing opposition to the growing legend of Floyd that is no longer there for Ali and Tyson.
I understand what you're pointing out. Do me a favor, count how many times Ward hit him after the right. He was taking a beating. And mentally Kovalev was beaten the round before. IMO you're missing the big picture.
They don't care about the "big picture", they are busy trying to salvage what is left of Kovalev's "krusher" image.
It is difficult for them to see this 'Monster" staggering around the ring being blasted by a guy whom they said:
"hits like a girl"
and is a coward,
and wouldn't take the fight, and would fake an injury
and was scared of a rematch.
It is surprising to all of us that Ward was able to take the fight to the big scary monster but he did....and Kovalev could not handle a fighter who took his punches and kept on coming.
From what I read, pac said he'll agree to leave tr for 1 fight. He will Not sign with mayweather or gbp. 1 fight deal, no options....only thing he asked of mayweather is if hes gonna want a rematch?!?!
I can't put a link cause its a boxing webpage on ig
This begs the question, why does Pac have to leave Top Rank for one fight at the end of his contract when Arum could just step aside for one fight NOW?
Is Arum holding Pac back from a fight he actually wants?
Criticism of Stevenson doesn't really make sense to me.
So Adonis was supposed to turn down a bigger financial offer (significantly bigger, according to his promoter) AND an opportunity to fight a much more well-known opponent and instead accept a low ball offer from HBO just so that the hardcore fans could be satisfied that he's not a coward? Why shouldn't HBO have to pay market value in order to keep Stevenson?
What if someone told you that you shouldn't take a higher paying job at different company because it would be better for the industry if you got less money and stayed at your current company?
Who says Adonis can't fight Fonfara, Hopkins and then Kovalev? Fight will be even bigger at that point.
I think everyone should withhold judgment on him ducking until we see what does in the next few fights. In the meantime, he should be entitled to get the most money he can, just like everyone else is.
I agree....some of the morons on NSB act like spoiled children throwing temper tantrums when they don't get what the want.
These athletes have a small window in their careers to get as much money as possible.
If they did what these stupid fans wanted they would end up punch drunk and broke. Meanwhile the promoters and networks move on to the next one and enrich themselves off the blood, sweat and tears of the fighters.
I begrudge none for maximizing their money when given the opportunity.
Some of y'all need to get Arum's old crusty a$$ balls out of y'all mouth.
Manny isn't afraid of needles, manny shouldn't need a cutoff on drug testing, Manny doesn't need a special stadium built.
All this BS was put in the game by Arum. Floyd is just attempting to REMOVE the only roadblock to this fight.
Arum has done this before when he kept Floyd and Oscar from fighting.
To get that mega fight made, BOTH decided it had to be done without Arum because he was blocking it.
The issue here is that SOME people (who are obviously Floyd haters) are harping more on Floyd's actions but not nearly as much on Ortiz's actions.
I believe Floyd should have been better, but NONE of this happens without Ortiz's intentionally headbutt. His action set the whole thing in motion.
LMAO at the naive.
Business is just like boxing, it is competition. These businessman are not in this to work together, any more than two boxers get in the ring to work together. They are in it to conquer the competition. They want to knock the other out.
The problem comes when we as fans are cosigning to crap. Make promoters give good undercards or stop watching. Demand fighters to fight the best or stop buying. But we can't expect these businessmen to get along for our sake. They only care about our dollars and that is how we whip them into shape.
Interesting.
I think a prime Johnson would be a live dog in a fight with Ward but couldn't see him winning.
Johnson IMO didn't do any one thing great except out work guys. Ward defense, and clutching would likely nullify Johnson's best trait.
On the other hand, Ward's athleticism and speed would like cause Johnson all kinds of problems.
All told Johnson makes it a fight but Ward by UD.
I just get that vibe from all promoters. I feel like they get rich off of fighters, and they take advantage of fighters. Promoters always have this big smile on their face like they don't have a care in the world. They seem greedy. Any thoughts on this. I feel like smart people will take advantage of not so smart people, especially with money. Promoters seem like rats.
That vibe you get is the vibe of a pimp, which in essence all a promoter is. He is trying to get people to buy his product and looks to make his product as appealing to the buyer as possible.
They will lie if the need to, cheat if they have to, and take all the money if they can.
In the same way a street pimp has girls on the street doin the work and making the money, a boxing promoter has the fighters working. The lure is that you can make more money being promoted by him than anyone else, same as a pimp telling his girl she would make more with him.
This is the reason why the best promoters are slick talkers, and great salesman.
The boxing promoter and street pimp are the same jobs in different career fields.
Espinoza was right on this one....after the publicity beating he took on some of his previous crap he needed to take a stand.
He just took a stand against the wrong guy.
Of course Clottey is not a credible opponent for Canelo, and the same guys here co-signing this would be the same ones bashing Showtime if it was approved.
If Espinoza was true then he will continue to not accept BS mismatches....if he continues to do the same as before then he is just a jackass
Cotto was older and small, no KO power in him we were watching for the respect for him.
GGG and Canelo are bulls going to war, it's different.
If this is made for May then the casuals would pay to see it and it could do 1.5 million buys
Cotto is more well known than GGG, not to mention that he bought the Puerto Rico/Mexico rivalry to the table. They still could not get to a million.
In fact, in the last 3 years only 1 fight has garnered a million PPV and that was the big one that everyone was waiting for.
I see no reason to believe that these two guys will intrigue casuals who barely know them to pay upwards of $70 for a PPV.
That says less about the fighters than it does about the PPV model.
I really don't see this fight getting 1M.
Cotto V Canelo didn't get to 1M. Floyd and Manny could no longer get to 1M individually.
Casuals take fights to that 1M range, and neither of the guys are big enough stars to make casuals spend that PPV money when they otherwise would not.
It always amuses me how much enthusiasm Golovkin fans show when he is rumored to fight anybody not named Andre Ward.
It's is all they have.
They get excited over who GGG could be negotiating with or who he MIGHT fight.....but his ACTUAL fights, not so much.
1---10-9-kovalev
2---10-8 kovalev
3---10-9 ward
4---10-9 kovalev
5---10-9-ward
6---10-9 kovalev
7---10-9-ward
8---10-9 ward
9---10-9 ward
10--10-9 kovalev
11--10-9 ward
12--10-9 ward
114-113 ward.
Any round scored the opposite changes the result, definitely a close fight so save the robbery bull****.
Too many people here don't know how to score a fight. Defense counts, body blows count, ring generalship counts.
There is more to it than just who lands the harder punches.
I'd love this fight.
What could be more fun than seeing a guy running around following someone talking mad isht, and then getting the brakes beat off him?
I hate Wlad and would love to see him beat the holy hell out of Briggs. This would keep me laughing for at least a week.
Bob Arum is not stupid when it comes to money...he knew Manny last PPV would have bad numbers but he did it anyway...And He knows Manny VS Vargas will bomb worst.
So can someone tell me whats up Bob Arums sleeve?
Alex Ariza has already answered that question.
Bob controls the books on all Pac fights, this allows him to keep Manny in the dark about how much he should REALLY be making.
If he co-opts with a big promoter on a Pac fight, then he must open the books to more eyes, and those new eyes would know how much he is screwing Manny.
Lol....GGG fans are wanting Ward as far away as possible.
GGG fans are constantly complaining that the elite fighters are ducking him yet the one elite dude that has shown interest in fighting him, they dont want any part of. Win or lose against Ward, he can still finish cleaning out 160.
They were willing to go to 168 to cherry pick JCC jr..... but wont go there for Ward. This is a clear duck. Maybe GGG is trying to protect his 0.
Nope you crazy if you think people going to buy a fight on the fourth of july quick question do you work for top rank?? You really dont want the fight to happen on may 2nd if you think cotto/canelo is a bigger fight more power to you..
What the fvck is wrong with these jackasses.
If Floyd says "let's fight May 2", and Pac says he's willing to fight anytime and anyplace then MAKE THE FIGHT HAPPEN!!!!
If we can even possibly get the biggest fight in history, then FVCK Cotto v Canelo.
The guy is 37 years old.
Every boxer should at least start THINKING about retirement at 37.
A lot of the greats may have wished they were able to retire at 37.
More Pac nuthugging in here.
Jackasses predicting a Manny stoppage......Manny hasn't stopped a guy in 5 years but all of the sudden he is going to stop Maidana....GTFOH.
Manny is no longer this destroyer that he was
Let's be honest....
If you were an investor putting big money in the fight game would you trust Oscar with BUSINESS decisions if he were running the show?
Oscar may rightly feel he is being "pushed out of his own company" but he has been his own worst enemy PR wise.
