Let's be realistic. Ortiz's team know his level. Unless it's a World Title fight, they haven't been willing to risk a half decent opponent since Bryant Jennings. As long as he sticks to his usual level of opponent, he can carry on making easy money, until receiving another title shot.
I don't live in the US, so I wouldn't know, but is this really that unusual a thing?
In the UK, Sky Sports and BT Sports will mention fighters even if they are signed to the main promoter for their rivals. As Sports networks, it seems wrong to ignore big parts of the sport
1.8m viewers is pretty impressive considering how few subscribers DAZN probably has. Especially considering that the fight was at an inconvenient time for USA based fans, and DAZN isn't available in the UK and Mexico.
We need more testing, not less. Just take Jarrell Miller as an example. He has been using PEDs for most of his career, made millions, and almost got a World title shot out of it, because he wasn't being tested.
Now he's "served" a self-imposed ban, and will make millions more, while still doping, and get away with it until he cheats his way to another title fight against someone with the leverage to demand adequate testing.
Canelo vs GGG (One of boxings biggest fights) was negotiated, signed and delivered before the big PPV Canelo vs Chavez and was announced in the ring after. AJ vs Vlad (One of boxings heavyweight fights in a while) was negotiated, signed and delivered before AJ vs Molina.
It's almost as if a deal can be negotiated between representatives of either fighter without disrupting their training schedule.
The two October shows will be better than the first 2 shows. Surely improving content is a sign of progress rather than failure.
Besides, people are talking like he isn't going to sign or announce anyone else. Don't forget he has 14 other cards to fulfill after October, and so at least a dozen more fighters will have to be signed to be able to out on enough shows.
Yes. Eddie Hearn will be spending his entire DAZN budget for the year on those fighters and the 3 cards they are on.
The other 29 shows that he is committed to show will just be reruns of the first 3.
What’s your our opinion of AJ saying he would sign the contract immediately for $50 million if offered only to decline and say he doesn’t care about money.
What’s your opinion of AJ willingly to fight AP but saying he needs more time in training camp to fight DW?
And finally do you think that it’s unreasonable that if AJ doesn’t care about money he offer wilder what ever wilder wants to make the fight happen?
If AJ had plain rejected the $50m then I would see it as a duck, but they countered and made another offer to Wilder on their terms, which was eventually "accepted". Can't complain about it.
To be honest, I don't really understand the thing about training camp time, as a date for Joshua - Wilder hadn't been set. I assume this would prevent the fight happening in July or August, but would have been no barrier from September onwards.
I can't recall AJ ever saying anything about not caring about money. I've heard Wilder say it. I don't think it's unreasonable to not give into Wilder's demands. If AJ/Hearn gave Wilder what he wanted the split would be 50-50, Wilder would have a rematch clause and it would be in the US. Why would anyone give up the leverage that their success and popularity bring to the table.
Piss off Eddie and AJ. Why would Wilder sign for 15MM after the run around. Precentage or no deal.
By the same token, why would Hearn/AJ offer Wilder anything more after he messed them around?
I don't think Canelo moving to DAZN makes a difference to the PPV market in the US. Mayweather's retirement certainly didn't have an impact.
PPV sales will always be dependent if a fight can generate enough excitement in it's own right, independent of any other fights that may be happening that aren't PPV.
Surely, by making offers, AJ and Hearn are doing their part. If Wilder's team refuse to meet, or negotiate, AJ will rightly move on and make a fight with someone else. He's not a Breazeale who will stay out of the ring until Wilder is ready for him.
Wilder's latest demand really doesn't matter. By conceding that he would accept 40%, he has conceded the power in making the fight to Eddie Hearn.
The fact is that, it should be possible for this fight to be made and deliver career high paydays for both Joshua and Wilder. When it comes to the negotiations, Hearn will probably start at low, and go up in small increments until greed takes over on Wilder's side and they accept out of fear of Hearn losing patience.
Meanwhile, both sides will try to throw in shots to help their argument for a bigger cut. Fans will get frustrated, accuse both sides of x, y and z and eventually a deal will be agreed that both parties are satisfied with.
Groves is one of those guys who hets no hype, and probably never will. He is capable of beating anyone at 168, and it would be a joke to suggest that any Middleweight could move up and beat him.
It's easier for the average person to relate to successful people who are humble. Even among friends, there will sometimes be a braggart in the group who can't help talking about their earnings, or their latest purchase. Most people will put up with that person, but few will actually like them.
It's the same reason why the sportspeople who spend their money as quick as they get it on flashy cars, clothes etc...will have plenty of hangers on when the money is rolling in, who will disappear as soon as it isn't.
No-one. Joshua will unify against Parker and then fight two mandatories. Povetkin and Pulev.
Wilder will fight Ortiz and Breazeale.
Fury will have 3 or 4 fights against nobodies.
Each of the 3 sets of fans will declare their respective boxer as heavyweight king.
You can't force someone to fight you. Ortiz will stick around fighting journeymen until Haymon throws him in for another few rematches with Wilder on PPV. PBC just can't afford to let Wilder's only credible win fight anyone who is a threat.
Oh, so you know to a certainty that Canelo would have been paid even more to fight Ryder if he had to step in for Saunders? Interesting....
Matchroom have a track record with Anthony Joshua at least, of not lowering his guarantee when an opponent pulls out. AJ made as much against Takam as he would have against Pulev. He made as much against Ruiz as he would have against Ruiz. It's almost certain, that if BJS had pulled out of the Canelo fight, Ryder would have stepped in and Canelo's purse would have been unchanged.
It's a benefit that comes from being the A - Side. When Mayweather signed the deal with Showtime, guaranteeing him $32.5m per fight, he had the same guarantee for opponents like Mosley, Cotto and Canelo as he did for the likes of Guerreiro, Ortiz and Berto. The only difference was the lesser opponents, received lower purses.
When AJ turned professional, Lewis wanted to manage/promote him, and AJ rejected him in favour of Matchroom. Since then, Lewis has been critical of AJ many times, and had nothing positive to say. Considering the high profile of both, this inevitably leads to AJ being questioned by the media every time Lewis criticises him, and inevitably ends up with a negative reaction.
It's no big deal really. Lewis shit talks AJ. AJ shit talks back
Lennox doesn’t have a promotional company at least not one that could compare with matchroom, top rank, pbc etc. I find it hard to believe that is the reason but I could believe AJ thinks he’s an atg better than Lennox and his mouth got him into a beef his resume can’t back up.
Lewis has been talking crap about AJ for years. As far as I can recall, this has been a one way feud, with AJ responding just once, a couple of years ago.
Either way, it's clear that Lewis hasn't ever gotten over beove rejected.
It makes sense really. Canelo is campaigning at 168 now. Andrade and Charlo's belts are held at 160. Benavidez doesn't hold a belt at all.
That leaves Saunders and Plant as the best fights available. Saunders first, and Plant second most likely generates more money than Plant first and Saunders second. It also helps that Canelo has an existing working relationship with Saunders' promoter, Matchroom.
VADA only does the testing. They can only report their findings. It is up to boxing commission's to choose what they want to do with those findings.
In terms if the substances that are banned "in-competition". Different commissions have their own interpretation so it makes sense for Vada to test and report those. For example, Massachusetts consider "in-competition" to be from the beginning of training camp. BBBOC consider it to be Fight night.
Basically, fans will use anything to downplay the accomplishments of fighters that they dislike. I would say don't let it get to you. Most fighters aren't fairly judged, until long after they have retired.
