Has he hurt hurt or helped the US PPV Market? On the one hand you could argue that's $140 saved if you only subscribe to DAZN for his 2 fights a year so will that money saved be spent on other PPV's? Or will people think if I can pay $10 to watch a Canelo fight why should I pay $70+ to watch a PPV?
I would say NEITHER!
The biggest PPV Market right now in the US is NOT BOXING it is UFC, even Mayweather still being the biggest DRAW in boxing knows this which is why he is open to a McGregor rematch or Khabib match and not really another boxer. Fighting UFC guys (on top of not being any type of Risk what so ever) = BIGGER $$$
So NO it is going to take time to get people to transition to this APP format so it is still money to be made on PPV in the US just don't charge $85 for your PPV :dunno:
I think he has changed the US PPV market for the better. Now, only mega fights will be on PPV and they will not be as expensive as Floyd or Canelo fights.
Obviously it's hurting it, this is a transitional period, but once the dust settles fans will be better off and probably the fighters will be too.
I think very few fights will end up on ppv, only HUGE mega fights.
We will see in the next year or so.
Just like we will see if DAZN is a success.
We've seen big boxing move from only premium cable and PPV outlets to regular TV, cable TV and streaming along with the still premium TV and PPV model here.
I don't think Canelo moving to DAZN makes a difference to the PPV market in the US. Mayweather's retirement certainly didn't have an impact.
PPV sales will always be dependent if a fight can generate enough excitement in it's own right, independent of any other fights that may be happening that aren't PPV.
