Yeah it obviously doesn't matter anymore at this point, but if Shane hadn't always elected to try to fight bigger guys (and use PEDs to do it) and campaigned at 135-140-147 his resume would look a lot better.
But I think people give him a lot of credit for his style, he was a fan friendly throwback type of fighter. Very tough, awesome chin.
His post-Forrest/Winky comeback was entertaining (Vargas fights especially) but everything after Margarito was simply to cash out and really hard to watch. I hope he stays retired- the thought of a Malignaggi fight was making me really aggravated.
It would really just raise Rees' profile at this point. If Broner can only win a UD in a competitive fight then Rees will get on TV again. Rees has everything to gain from giving a good account of himself. Broner pretty much just has to lose to not get a big opportunity in the near future. Rees can lose and still climb the ranks in this situation.
All of that said- how would Rees win? Jab? He needs physical attirbutes (speed) that he doesn't seem to have, I just can't picture it right now.
Nice Pavlik picture- man he has even more than I initially realized. Andre Ward is going to humiliate him. I fully expect him to get a Bam Bam Bigelow bald head tat after that fight.
Yahoo! article called out JMM pretty hard on potential PED use:
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/boxing--juan-manuel-marquez-newfound-muscle-raises-questions-about-ped-use-manny-pacquiao-200532499.html
I haven't seen any of the 24/7's, does any have pictures?
Manny looked good on Saturday until he got aced. I'm not sure if that type of loss will change him or not as a fighter. I'm inclined to think nobody forgets an experience like that, but Manny is also a unique fighter and the fact that he hasn't completely retreated from the public eye is a telling sign that he isn't slipping into a crazy depression like so many fighters tend to do in this situation..
I hope he treads carefully. Get the 5th rematch if you can, rematch Bradley if you can.. That's it though. Forget about fighting Floyd, don't fight Alvarez.
If Manny just tries to redeem his 2 back to back losses from this year then that is a career as far as I'm concerned.
He won the super 6 tournament. This is why people say he cleaned out the division.
There are definitely people he still hasn't fought yet, but not a single one mentioned would beat Ward.
I think Matthysse is a pretty bad dude. I do expect him to win via stoppage- but if he doesn't then I'll have to concede that he might not be as good as I currently think he is against the top tier. But as of right now I expect him to win his next 3 fights and scoop up a bunch of titles.
Ward reminds me of Hopkins in many ways- they have a different set of tools but they both negate their opponent's strengths. I would say that Ward actually is one of the smarter top fighters right now.
Mayweather's most dangerous foes:
Canelo, Martinez both naturally bigger, fast and powerful guys.
And then down at 147... we always leave out Broner because they're boys. Which is really convenient for both of them because if Broner stops Paulie convincingly.. He is clearly the other dude at 147.
It kind of sucks that Floyd and Broner are trying to be all Klitchsko at welter from a pure fight-fan perspective. But I am speaking too soon- we need to see how Broner looks against Malignaggi. But for him to be at 147 and for Floyd to supposedly have 5 more fights campaigning around that weight.. That is a lot of fights and those 2 names never fighting is just going to become more and more noticeable.
He didn't quit, he got zapped.
Floyd might not hit like a mack truck but if you're going to just stand there and look at the ref then yes, the best fighter in the world can probably cold **** the **** out you and end a fight.
Good call, here's to an awesome career. Seriously, just one hell of a fighter. At 135 Shane was unreal. Then he just kept knocking out guys 30 pounds bigger than him for the rest of his run.
Well done Shane.
it will be a miracle if williams ever walks again
his career is over.
his spine was severed.
Yeah, it sucks. Whether you're a fan or not it's terrible.
I've been following Floyd since he dismantled Corrales. He's an incredible fighter and I've supported his career by watching pretty much all of his fights. He is an all time great and he's more than a special fighter, but what went down last night was just awful. And you can't defend the guys persona anymore. And if you like the way it happened last night then you're a straight douche bag.
If you had told me 3 years ago that Danny Garcia would still be undefeated in 2015 and told me the fights that would occur in between- I would have laughed in your face.
...And been super wrong.
Seriously though, I can't believe he hasn't taken an L yet. He was supposed to be fish food for Amir Khan years ago. I do wish Lucas could get a rematch but I also can't picture Garcia EVER wanting to fight Matthysse after picking up that W.
Why haven't we seen Garcia fight any of the big names down there between 140-147? I figured he could have made a big fight after being on the Floyd/Canelo card.
That Matthysse win was a legit win, I'm not disputing that at all. The best win of Garcia's career outside of exposing Khan. I was shocked after watching it.
Dudes... in 2013 it's officially time to get over this ****.
Mayweather is the best there is in this particular moment/era. If you're the type who gets pulled into fantasy debates then I'm sorry. Even if Floyd does lose as he approaches 40 it doesn't change anything. He earned his spot whether you love him or hate him.
I wanted to see Pac vs. Floyd as much as anybody but I always felt Floyd's technical prowess would win the day... fast forward to now and it seems that much more more apparent that Floyd has a superior skillset and approach.
I believe Lamar is from here in NC, he's very good but this will obviously be the biggest stage he's ever been on. I wish him the best, it would be a huge splash for him if he wins this fight. If he shows up and his mind is right he could win. In a perfect world this isn't a fight that happens right now just yet- but when opportunity knocks.... here we go
Pacquiao's star eclipses Bob Arum. He doesn't need Bob Arum anymore, especially if there's only 3 or 4 fights left for him. He is Manny Pacquiao.
And if he doesn't fight Floyd next- now that Floyd is finally the one calling for it off the heels of the Marquez fight- then it's Manny's fault. Not Bob's.
Bob Arum sucks. But this is on Manny, don't get it twisted.
The ending of that fight was really, really wack.
But yes I think Floyd was definitely going to KO Ortiz regardless. I just wish I could have gotten my money's worth, these PPV's are too expensive. But I can't get enough of the big fights.
Miguel Cotto is a great role model, even beyond boxing. He's quiet, reserved, and most of all he gets **** done.
Saturday ought to be great, can't wait to see the fight.
The argument about people being disappointed in Floyd's fights in my opinion starts with the Gatti fight.
June 2005- FMJ completely destroys the famous, beloved, marquee brawler Arturo Gatti. I believe this was his first headlining PPV? Might be wrong about that.
Right after that big high profile win he fights Sharmba Mitchell- who's fight before this was an ugly affair on the undercard of Mike Tyson's last (horrible) fight. It ended on cuts and was a **** fight, and he didn't deserve a shot at Floyd. He had a snowball's chance in hell to win. Before this fight Sharmba was destroyed by Tszyu is also worth mentioning.
Things build up at this point and everyone wants him to fight Zab Judah because he's got the belts and has been riding high since looking amazing against Cory Spinks. Only problem is Zab gets beat in the upset of the decade by Carlos Baldomir. Floyd elects to fight Zab anyway even though he's coming off a loss and doesn't have the belts.
Baldomir beats Gatti afterward- and then he is up as Floyd's next fight.
A lot of people cried about this fight, hated the fight, knew FMJ would dominate (which of course he did). But I never saw an issue here because Baldomir was the undisputed Welterweight champion- no reason not to go take all of his titles imho. But really all of this is around the time (before Oscar's comeback) that names like Margarito, Cotto, and Mosley are the ones being thrown around by fans who really want to see Floyd fight another top tier fighter.
But Oscar made his big comeback and looked awesome against Mayorga- then that fight came to fruition.
I think everyone loved Floyd vs. Oscar. It was a great fight and I (and I think everybody) wanted to see it.
After that he fought undefeated Ricky Hatton- this was also awesome. You can't call this cherry picking in my opinion. Hatton also had a nice '0'. I would have loved to see Floyd fight Shane around this time while he was still looking fast and sharp, but that's just me being an old Mosley fan.
The Marquez fight is where things get a little stupid... Just a mismatch, really kind of a waste of time. But he did help Juan make some good money, and it was his first fight after a long layoff. Mixed feelings- but an obvious mismatch on paper and in reality. Floyd was the bigger, faster, and better fighter. But JMM is the man, and has a big name. I thought this fight was him sending a message to Pacman honestly- it was such a weird choice for him to make this fight and the only reasoning in my eyes was so Manny would see that Floyd wanted to fight him and intimidate him by dominating Manny's arch rival.
Then the Mosley fight- I was glad he fought Shane and I wanted to see it. It's not worth arguing that he could have or should have fought Shane earlier instead of going on either of his long vacations- because ultimately they did fight and we got to see it go down. It would have been a better fight I think even 1 year earlier if not 2 or 3 years earlier when it was still a big money maker fight and Shane was still competitive.
And now he's finally fighting Cotto- and I can't wait! Again I'm mostly just glad it's happening- and still don't think it's worth it to harp on how it could have or should have happened sooner. Cotto is still the younger guy and it's still going to be a competitive fight.
Floyd has had his moments, and he has had his fights that have been disappointing. Not his performances- he always performs and is amazing to watch. But he has certainly disappointed with his picks for who he fights- but it's not fair to say he cherry picked everyone he ever fought. It just isn't true. He just hasn't gone the 'fight anybody anytime' route.
Part of why I've always stood my ground as a Mosley fan is because Shane fought so many guys he could have (and maybe should have) avoided and he paid for it, but he still did it. It's old school to do this, it's about being cut from a different cloth.
But in the end look at where Floyd is and look at where Shane is... I have more respect for Shane- but it's plain to see who came out on top with their choices.
Sorry for such a long post, randomly decided to get on my soapbox for some reason..
Yeah.. That didn't give me too much to hope for as far as how Shane is going to look when he shows up May 5th. As much as I want him to turn back the clock and have a nice swan song performance... This could be a bad fight for him.
shane can win- i just hope he understand that he has to be sharp as a razor for half the fight and he needs to ride his bike like a master for the last half.
a slugfest with margarito is not an option at this point- if shane doesn't realize this it could be a real bad night for him. shane mosley can't knock margarito out, this should be obvious to shane- i hope to god it is at least.
shane should win- his own pride will be his biggest adversary here.
i wish all of the egos could just stand down so this could happen. i knew this fight was too good to be true. mannys next opponent is going to be weak no matter who it is now unless he does something awesome and fights shane or jmm 3.
i hope manny wins a ****ton of money in his lawsuit. he doesn't deserve all this slander.
1 mayweather is pissed off he decimated ricky hatton.
2 more mayweathers just don't want the fight with him, it really seems that simple. floyd never needed olympic testing before- he only needs it when he needs a reason to complicate and convolute a fightdeal he doesn't actually want to make.
