hahahaha. I just don't understand this thread. What is the obsession with foot movement. Every fighter has their own style they adapt to best suit their mechanics. Byrd is quick frankly b/c he has to. Larry Holmes pumped his jab w/ effectiveness and really only used his feet to give his opponents a different look. I feel he fires his jab w/ more accuracy and authority when he's moving at his customary flat footed pace and others lik Tyson and the like move flat footed to maximize their vaunted punching power.
Bowe had all the intangibles to b one of the gr8est champs. Excellent hand speed and power for his size, an imposing physique, a good beard...He was just lazy. Lewis for all his skills i dont think had as good a chin as Bowe and that would hav made all the difference
Finito Lopez was overlooked despite his skillz. JCC of course is the standard by which all Mexican fighters are compared to. Carlos Zarate was also sick. One of the most impressive Kayo records ever
i dont think any1 is discounting his longevity and past greatness but in this particular instance if found guilty of the charges, he should most definitely return the title irregardless of how ahead he was in the fight or how good of a fighter he is. It's ethics
Call me crazy but I have a funny feeling that Corrales is going to stop Castillo late and completely dominate the fight. Correct me if I'm wrong but hasn't Castillo been stopped before? Though Corrales has been hurt by the likes of Casamayor and Floyd Mayweather Jr., they present completely different tactical situations being that they're both very slick boxers. Castillo isn't going to change, he's coming straight ahead and if Diego is given the opportunity to tee off i think he can force Castillo toback off. Castillo's power is accumulation but if Diego can gain repect 1st then I think he has taken away Castillo's most important dimension.
Who cares how fast Holmes was on his feet!!! His effective use of his jab and occasional off rhythm right were what he was known for. If you want to talk about foot movement, talk abt Willie Pep. It's like asking was Tyson faster on his feet than Tua. Who the hell cares!! They'll both tear you to shreads flat footed and that's all that mattered
It's always a particular innate ability or uncanny skill that sets those P4P fighters apart and frankly there isn't anyone in the heavyweight division deserving any P4P recognition. Byrd has the tools except he forgets to counter punch and hasnt performed up to par, Vitali is just big and grossly mechanical though effective and James Toney has to fight someone of note. Even if they had the set of skills to be on the list, the lack of legit opposition is frightening.
He's got a little bit of Holyfield in him too. I'd rather just see him start training fighters or managing or something if his he can't satisfy his love for the ring. He's a tru warrior but when it's time, it's time. Everyone has to call it quits no matter how much it hurts at some time
Savon had an odd frame for a heavyweight, or so it appeared. Kinda weiry arms and lean. He looked built more for the amateur ranks than anything else. Probably woulda been a good pro as many Cuban exiles turn out 2 b but i wouldn't hold out anything more than that. Not sure how gr8 he woulda been able to hold up under a big punch
Never understood my Ikeke hasn't been moved along faster. He's a freak 6'4 I believe. He looked good against Primera showing good movement and defensive skills. I think he beats Echols and should move on to fight Sturm. I think that would b a very interesting fight
Rough beards are like wire gauze especially over aggrevated skin. Any fighter already having a cut rubbing heads w/ a fighter w/ a beard will only cause more damage. Short beards are permissable like Howard Eastman's
i did the same right after i saw the fight and was also saddened to see that the fight ended his career and possibly his life. I thought he won clearly though it was a close fight. Somewhat of a hometown decision IMO
As much as I dislike watching Ruiz fight, you have to give him credit for his audacity to call out fighters even if it's misguided. A champ has to act like a champ and he's supremely confident fighting a man i bet most in the heaveyweight division would rather ignore in James Toney. All in all I think he'll get owned and lose a lob sided decision.
I have an eerie feeling that *gasp* Ruiz is going to let his hands go. I mean who are we kidding, even him actually deciding 2 fight isn't any sort of redemption for what he's done to the boxing world. I guess he owes us at the very least one good fight before he rides off into the sunset
I didn't know they were all on cuts, sorry. Still, I believe Corrale's power will make the difference just because of Castillo's straight ahead style. I don't think Castillo hits much harder than Freitas if he even hits as hard. He just has adapted that never back down, never surrender attitude that just wears on you and breaks your will. Corrales is not easily broken as evidenced in loss to Mayweather tho despite thoroughly dominated continued getting up. In the 1st Casa fight he jus kept firing back despite also being down twice w/ a nasty cut inside his mouth and against Freitas he was outclassed thro 6 some odd rounds until he caught up w/ him. Gonna b a gr8 fight and i still stand by Diego TKO 11
The Castillo fight would be best i think. He's a well schooled boxer and doesn't posses knockout power. I think it would restore some crediblity IF he can win otherwise he should just pack it up
I think it would be an entertaining fight and a safe win w/ the reward of a belt for Morales. It'll be a competitive lob sided victory for Erik jus b/c Robbie is tough and he knows it would be last chance at stardom. If anything, it would b a stay busy fight and it would give me a little more leverage at the negotiating table w/ the extra belt not that he needs it
Unusual for Gatti not to show up at a press conference. Seems more like a PBF move. Nonetheless, Gatti's name alone is enough to sell out most any venue and true boxing fans know that Mayweather is an artist. Promotional wise, it'll b easy to sell this one, Gatti or no Gatti
I think Morale's aggression coupled with the fact that he's naturally bigger and physically more imposing had more to do than power. Pac is a helluva puncher but it jus doesn't hav the same effect against a iron willed man like Erik who also happens to be stronger. I think the long haul and Pac's inability to detonate Morales wore on Manny's will jus b/c Morales weight is more functional where Manny's weight is jus put on to fight at a higher division.
PBF has proven his worth against every type of fighter. He's especially devastating against sluggers and despite EM skills as a boxer, he just has an innate tendency to fight. Jesus Chavez gave EM a hard time w/ a hurt shoulder while Floyd Mayweather stopped him w/in the distance. As for PBF getting whipped by EM in sparring, he also got owned to Paul Spadafora. I guess the Pittsburg kid should take him on 2 :)
Even though Joval is a natural 160 pounder, he's still not as strong nor does he fill the weight as thoroughly as Vargas. Vargas at times looked a little soft at 154. I always wondered if it was a business move to fight at that weight. Anyways, he should make this a one fight thing at 160 unless he somehow wrks his way into another payday w/ trinidad or hopkins and gets eaten up
I was actually very impressed with Eliseo Castillo against Moorer. He's a very well schooled boxer (product of the Cuban amateur system) and bounced well on his feet the entirety of the fight staying out of Moorer's punching distance. He also has pretty quick hands and picked his spots well to mix it up. Vlad did own Byrd put that was before and I'm not sure what's left of anymore. I'm actually going out on a limb and picking Castillo to decision him
The problem with Eastman was that he looked so awkward, almost like he didn't hav full control of his limbs. Taylor is a well conditioned and schooled athlete w/ an excellent jab and the footwork necessary to jet out of Bernard's grapples. Hopkins is gonna hav to fight at a much faster pace otherwise I feel Jermaine is gonna simply beat Hopkins by out pointing him w/ his quicker and longer jab. I kno Hopkins is gr8 but man he's soooo boring
Why would Toney ever want to spar w/ Rahman who is a potential opponent. Last thing James wants is someone to feel out his style especially w/ his subpar heavyweight punch. James win by virtue that he's 2 stubborn to go down to the likes of Hassim and Rahman tires himself out. Toney outwrks Ruiz in a boring fight
I think Trinidad ranks higher P4P regardless of activity. IMO, the ranking is solely dependent on opposition and Bronco McKart 3 times, JC Candelo, and disputable losses to Vargas, Harry Simon and Vazquez? (I think that's his name) don't hold to par w/ Trinidad. Regardless of what you may think about the DLH fight, Tito was awarded the decision, TKOed Vargas, destroyed Joppy, Yory Boy Campas, Mayorga (Yea he was blown up but nonetheless he was name fighter and former undisputed champ) and only lost to P4P king Bernard Hopkins. Shane Mosley is Wright's claim to fame but I don't believe he was really all there at 154 while I thought Trinidad fought natural 154 and 160 pounders in Vargas and Joppy and knocked them out.
Winky is real strong but lack the power to keep Bernard Hopkins on the outside the entire fight. Once Hopkins finds his way inside he'll use his rough house tactics to fatigue and frustrate Wright to an easy UD
I haven't seen the fight but sounds like it was ferocious. Was it that Hussein that gave Manny a tough time a while back w/ the biased ref giving Pac a long count or his brother Nedal who recently lost?
