i mean if u say marquez is more skilled why cant he beat fighters like miguel cotto , oscar de la hoya even in fantasy fights
"Even in fantasy fights"
Maybe the dumbest thing I've ever read on here. And I'm trying to wrap my head around the debate in this thread.
Probably important to point out that boxing is a sport. And the object of the "game" is to beat up your opponent until they can no longer or finish (or control the other fighter). So, is marquez "better"?
Do the math
It doesn't mean manny isn't the superior athlete, but the object of the "game" is to win... That's why they fight.
Maidana is the definition of a warrior. He fights till he literally has nothing else to give. Maidana is willing to die inside a ring and on May 3rd there is only one question left to be answered... is Floyd willing to do the same?
It's relentlessness versus finesse. Lion versis dolphin. Brute force against intelligence.
May 3rd, we find out.
Dude..."lion vs. Dolphin"?! Lol
Have you ever laced up a pair of gloves???
You obviously haven't if you think Max if versed in the finer nuances of the sport. Roys analysis is always spot on, and reflects what is about to happen.
Roy is bias. And although a great fighter in his day--he adds no insight. Kellerman is a fanboy who doesn't understand what it's like to be in the ring. I think for entertainment Lampley is the voice of boxing, and merchant was great before he went senile.
Bottom line is: the hbo guys are better than that lame mma-esque broadcast on showtime. Which is a shame because they have the more interesting fights. (And Al Bernstein will always strike me as a bottom tier analyst. Too many Friday nights for Al).
Do your homework on what glass jaw means. Jmm has a glass jaw?? A guy who has never been stopped. Sometimes people get dropped due to being out of position, sometimes people can't take a shot. A good ko usually come from a marriage between the two.
I think khans chin problems are exaggerated. Being rocked by Maidana, and stopped by Prescott is hardly cause to call someone chinny. Those dudes drop bombs, garcia too.
Sometimes I feel people just started watching boxing yesterday (on this site)
Do the math, man. Don't be blinded by PAC walls. Manny made jmm wait fours years... Twice. I don't have a dog in this race. I'm calling it as I see it. I'm manny fan, Floyd fan, and jmm fan. I'm not delusional, and I don't carve a narrative to suit my fanboy ness. Manny was given hell by jmm, and left the public with skepticism about mannys supposed greatness. Every time they fought--it made this business side of his career tarnished. Jmm isn't a marketable guy and he keeps fuxking up the manny train.
I'm a casual fan of both Floyd and Manny.
I think Manny ducked JMM for years, and went back to the well when he needed a good fight because of Floyd and his games.
Floyd ducked Margarito in his prime, and was blatant and transparent by saying he wouldn't fight him via popularity and money. (And I'm uncertain young Floyd could handle Margarito in his prime)
I think they're both protected fighters to a certain degree. It's a tough call. Mannys alliance with arum leaves him little options. And Money claiming he's the best and fighting Robert Guerrero and a green Canelo doesn't speak much for his legacy. I'm glad hes fighting Maidana though.
Did he leave Robert Garcia permanently? Or is it just a temporary thing?
It's kind of a myth that he is with Garcia all the time. He trains in the bay with some martial arts crew (who also "train" boxers). Garcia helps him close camp, and is in his corner. But, he's not really part of that Oxnard crew.
N
Marquez...
He beat Marquez in every phase of the game but the weight thing is huge. I'm constantly baffled by fan boys who can't grasp the concept of that fight being a mismatch from the jump (then Floyd comes in over).
Floyd's "easiest" fight? It would have to be one where he is dominant, in control, and out of harms way, and a guy who is dangerous. So, I'd say Corrales.
again i'm not speaking of his resume in the lower weights ... he was an ATG. I'm saying when ranked amongst the 4 he is held in a higher regard than all except Leonard...
Well, you're framing a question without allowing context to give you your answer. He's part of the "4 horsemen" because they all fought eachother. But, his resume exists independent of the fights with those guys, those guys bank their resume on the fights with one another. So, the premise of your question is flawed. Duran would still be Duran. His fights with those guys are just a teastment of how game he was. Success among those opponents doesn't really mad. It's an unfair comparison at the end of the day. You can't say any of those guys names without mentioning Duran. Duran (besides Leonard) exists without them
Why is it that he seems to get so much love and is even ranked higher by most when compared to the rest of the 4 horesmen? He did tremendous things at the lower weight classes and was smaller than all three of the other guy's but he lost to every single one of them... with the exception of the one win over Leonard in the first fight (you could argue Leonard won that one too)... Hearn's nearly decapitated him, Hagler beat him, No Mas' and he lost to "Radar" Benitez...
Why is he ranked so high ... not in the lower classes but the work he did in those superfights...
He was exciting, ruthless, a wild man both in and out of the ring but he lost damn near every single one of the fights that mattered most...
I'm admitting my ignorance on the subject as I'm pretty weak with my boxing history pre 1990. So take it easy on me... but It's always been something that bothered me and I've never really gotten a good answer.
When I speak to old timer's guys my father or uncles age it's alway Leonard and then Duran that come up and maybe in close 3rd it's Hagler.
He completely dominated as a lightweight. And he was 70-1 when he fought Leonard, and fought him at welterweight. And beat him soundly (I don't think that fight is debatable). The fact that he was competing with some of the greatest Middleweights ever when he was in his 30's is pretty astonishing.
They're both old but they are still the top two best guys at 147 (I still think Pac would win Marquez rematch). There are no really promising 147ers besides Thurman.
They're both retiring soon anyway, their punch output is telling.
Yeah, he'd totally win a Marquez rematch--he's fought a retard (rios), a feather fisted Bradley, and a kickboxer (algieri). He was outclassed and countered last night---yeah, he would totally beat the guy who dropped him and eventually knocked him out.
Thanks for the dumb post
First of all, he didn't. Second of all, he didn't, third of all he is too hittable and landed mainly power jabs. Cotto did worse than Maidana and Pac.
Cotto's defence isn't good enough, he's too stationary, has no upper body/head movement and is too slow for Floyd, he cuts the ring off well though I'd give him that.
There's a very strong anti Pacquiao sentiment on here, because he didn't fight a certain way he doesn't get credit. Truth is Pacquiao put on a defensive masterclass in there and for the most part took away Floyd's right hand, something very hard to do!
Cotto does no better in the rematch. People are swayed with Floyd, the opponent has to do something "fight his fight" throw dozens of punches. You'll never get credit for making Floyd miss and countering him, because he's assumed to win every fight he doesn't get pressured non stop in.
These are the facts!
I was ready to agree with you; but you have it all wrong. Cotto was in the fight, but I think he lost nearly every round, and people give him far too much credit. Cotto did have success when he cut off the ring, used volume punching and finished combinations with a jab before May could reset. Manny was supposed to do that (and win). I even picked Manny, and rooted for him. But Floyd's defense was fantastic and he hit manny at will. Manny looked like Manny from the third Marquez fight (the one where he was outboxed). Minus the activity.
Cotto exceeded expectations and didnt disappoint. Most people look out of sorts and out classed when fighting Floyd. (canelo, manny, Guerrero,). Cotto was game all fight...but he was shut out for the most part. His performance is overrated.
I had Maidana squeaking by May in the their first fight. May had problems with Maidana's physicality, awkwardness, power. His awkwardness was the X factor once May figured him out late I knew it was going to be a breeze in fight 2. Cotto doesn't really deserve a fight two
Floyd vs everyone he's faced since 2009
Floyd lost that first fight to Maidana (it was close).
Every fighter who has fought Broner since Maidana has made him look ordinary... Even when he won.
And, Devon made Maidana look ordinary
Slap boxing was a good way to learn how to fight as a kid or at the very least keep your skills sharp. I did it a bunch when I was younger and I'm sure most people growing up in neighborhoods similar to mine:.. Don't mind the nerds on here who are unfamiliar with the term.
Uh, in my neighborhood we just got in the ring. This slap boxing nonsense is one the lamest things I've read on here for months (next to Pac fans defending all of his loses with excuses, Floyd fans thinking he's tbe, and euro boxing fans acting like we care)
You had a ring in the middle of your neighborhood that could be used at all hours of the night? Where'd you grow up at? So if it was 8 or 9pm and you and your friends start play fighting you would all stop at that point, call your parents, arrange a car pool and head over to the nearest boxing gym?
Something about that scenario is not adding up...
What really happens and has been happening for generations is if you and your friends were playing around you would set up some ground rules (you didn't want to hurt your friend) and you would say something like ok "if your throwing a shot to my face it has to be open handed, to the body anything goes and obviously nothing below the belt and no wrestling" ... And that's how slap boxing was born. I honestly don't think you ever slap boxed as a kid or even boxed at all based on that stupid ass comment.
We'd rope off the yard, or the sidewalk and box. If we didn't have gloves then sure we'd have some rules. But, to associate that into some sort of appreciation of Floyd or something--it's nonsense. So that's what I'm talking about. And, I've been boxing my whole life. I'm not one of these netexperts, posting pundit, or phony bologna dude. I take it seriously. So, don't play yourself. I get what you're saying, but I don't see how this is associated with Floyd. This board has this neurosis that leads all their limited knowledge back to Floyd. Give me a break. I was boxing before I knew of Floyd. Most of these rooks only like boxing because of floyd
Broner would win the rematch. Porter didn't even box properly, he thought it was a wrestling match, rushing in all the time like he was a bull. Broner smacked him in the final round and I think Broner would take the rematch more seriously and clown Porter.
Broner fans make the most groundless claims. Dude, he wasn't even in that fight. Even after he put Porter on the deck Porter got up and mauled him.
Dumb dumb dumb
Broner should retire. He's boring, he's amateurish, and he rode the Haymon luxury limo through the rankings. Last stop, buddy
But i see hardly anyone mentioning it,Imagine if it was Floyd and he was hurt like that and the ref stopped the fight like that. Man the site would crash
Dude, do you watch boxing and just day dream about Floyd and how to incorporate him into conversations?
I can see asking "where's the outrage?"
But doesn't always have to be about Floyd with you. Sheesh
I think it's curious that he always catches breaks; he was given the PAC win (although I thought the fight was closer than most like to admit), it would have been justified if they gave Ruslan the win (by stoppage), the Marquez fight could have gone either way. And now last night: "oops I stopped the fight too early"
He just always get breaks.
I think he has a great chin, awful power, and great heart. But I'd fight that way too if I knew I'd catch all the breaks. Strange.
also, I think the fight should have been ruled a "no contest". If the ref stops the fight without the reason of protecting a fighter or the like--it should be a no contest. It doesn't matter what's happening in the fight. It's like the Taylor/Chavez fight. The job is to protect the fighter no matter what the clock says.
So, if he stopped it just because--no contest
He was. He was being paid by HBO. Hamed wasn't paying him any more so he had no problem throwing him under the bus to hype an active HBO fighter.
I still remember how he went in on Lennox Lewis for not coming out of retirement to fight Vitali years after the fact just because he was being paid by the Klitschko's and not Lennox at the time.
Manny Steward also trained Kermit Cintron to face Antonio Margarito and watched Margarito's hands being wrapped but still tried to throw Margarito under the bus because that's what HBO's agenda was.
Manny Steward was once described as a "mercenary whore". And I don't mean to speak ill of the dead but that's what he was. When Naz was paying him, he was the "greatest featherweight of all time". When he stopped, all this stuff about how he advised him not to face Barrera and Marquez came out :lol1:
Regardless, even if he did advise Naz not to fight him, it doesn't change the fact that he's a trainer and Naz's promoter offered Marquez the fight. And Marquez by his own word turned it down.
Fan boys always have excuses. I just realized you're from the uK
Paulie used to clown the Haymon guys for their phony careers...then he joined them. Hands himself to Broner and Garcia. And, Garcia embodies everything wrong with Haymon's crew.
Besides, I don't even know why Garcia fights at all; with his last few fights he should just show up to when they announce the winner. He lost to Lamont, and Herrera, and fights guys like Salka. I can't believe I used to respect (and be a fan of) Garcia
