One punch knockout = NO
Ortiz Check Hooked/Or runs onto to something = Possibly
Ortiz corner/referee stopping the fight = YES quite possible
Mayweather as deceptive power, but I doubt he has the power to KO ortiz with one punch.
I agree with the above poster claiming Mayweather has appeared troubled (maybe the wrong word) by south paws, I'm sure I even recall reading that Mayweather Snr once said that he doesnt want his son to fight another southpaw again (not 100% but I do recall something to that nature being said). But with that said Mayweather wont have any trouble dealing with Ortiz, who I feel is a little too green to be causing Mayweather any trouble. At best if in the opening rounds Ortiz seems to be having any form of success Mayweather will close up shop (ala the Sugar Shane fight) by dictating the tempo to cruise to a UD.
It's obvious to anyone that this is a tune up fight; come fight night Mayweather wouldnt of been in a competitive fight for 16 months by the third round it'll be back to usual business.
Khan spent the majority of the build up to this fight talking about mayweather being chicken, pacquiao retiring, prancing down the red carpets to everything other than a fridge door opening and then strolling around the white house as if he'd already won the fight the night before. Please believe Peterson would of been hard body focused for this fight, he came up off the floor and grinded out a decision questionable maybe but we've seen worse.
Not saying that Khan isn't a good talent but right now rather than shouting about robbery (which is hard to believe given that khans the future sports poster child and backed by a massive machine in GBP) we need to question his complacency and or desire. This fight on paper should of been a testing fight yes, but khan should of come away with the win and looked well at it to outshine his rivals at 140. Every retired/current Pro and trainer (barring Eddie Mustafa Muhammed who called it right) had Khan being to polished for Peterson. Another thing it appears Khans/Roach B game plan was run.
The Bradley comparisons are all valid but again Khans skill set should beat Bradley, but going off last nights performance Bradley would give Khan problems times 2 to what peterson gave him.
This is the second time in his career that he's stubbled across the stone in the road fight; the elite fighters overcome these type of fights thats difference.
Thankfully with Khan being the british import with cross market appeal his stock wont drop as much but believe me he can't afford another loss. He has to go for the rematch and win in style.
In a nut shell - Last nights decision, if it would of been in england he'd of got the home nod but he was warned by several pros and he himself said he can't leave it to the judges and shouldnt of done. What Khan does next will be interesting he has to go for the rematch and in truth he can't leave 140 with the excuse that theres nothing down there for him - again another quote that just ridicules himself. The difference between arrogance and confidence is that confidence supplies the goods.
All credit to Peterson he did what he had to do and got the nod.
Khans on every media outlet in the UK trying his best to discredit a narrow loss; a true champion would take the L and win the rematch..
Team Khan is in damage limitation mode but this is actually more damaging.
You'd think Khan (Boxing Olympic Silver Medalist) wouldn't wanna drag boxings name through the mud it just goes to show he's in it for the wrong reasons.
At first I wanted to see a rematch and thought it was just; but now if peterson doesnt give him a rematch I'd seriously understand his logic.
This is a real ***** move right here, wonder how roach and the wild card gym feels about this as it's also giving them a bad name too.
Also is any of this being aired or given time on US media or is it just a UK PR stunt???
He's come out and said he hurt his right in the 6th.
The OP is partially right; obviously earnie shavers power is a born with trait but you can work on power but like someone mentioned above wards throwing the punches correct. Maybe some of them Ariza shakes could help him out ;-)
Should he have been doing that? Answer: no.
Wonder what else he was doing.
So would it of been fair that the 9 + 9 + 9 score came out as 28? or even the other way 26? The correction was done for the benefit of the fight.
Agreed it was against the rules but if this is the truth then the man in the hat made the fight fair (at least on welsh's score card).
Here's another twist say Welsh was deliberately trying to give khan the extra point by getting 3x9 to be 28?
Anyway two wrongs have never made a right but Khan put himself in this position; we all know talent/skill wise Khan should be beating Peterson level fighters. Khan as been given everything since hes turned pro and still will be even with the 2 L's on his record.
Even an hardened Khan fan cannot truly say the way he as reacted to all of this is in good vein of the sport that pays him so well.
@147??? Mosley takes it either late knock out or tko on cuts...
Mosleys speed and power would prove too much for hatton, and to be honest I can't see Hatton being able to rough up mosley around the ring how he likes to do with his other opponents which would further frustrate hatton just leading to another defeat for him.
But it would be a good fight for us to watch...
B-Hop aint the brightest kid on the block, but i'll admit he did handle this quite well, imagine an hostile tyson in that situation... The brightest Yanks don't know how to take our dry humour sometimes so what chance as Bernard Hopkins got?
Also the interviewer as a really sarcastic sounding voice and his choice of questions weren't the best I think he should just stick to holding the camera.
What makes it worse is B-Hop actually admires is estimate of his own intelligence... Unlike Uncle roger who'd just stutter & mutha Fucka throughout the interview...
Ray Robinson....
That would put more fire into WW... He could fight Mayweather and Cotto in a 30 day period (Inc. rematchs!)
Then move up to MW and cause a stir there by summer!
If calzaghe does lose which UK fighter are you going to start to shit on next? because they seems to be a reccuring theme on these forums. The fact is yes Calz could have fought better opposition but there wasn't anybody in his division to put up that great of a threat. When you start moving up and down divisions you greatly reduce you're longevity, and for calzaghe not doing that is probably the best thing he could have done as he is still top of his game at 35 years old, he hasn't had to adapt for a lack of speed or for losing his chin as he's still as good as he was 10 years ago albeit with abit less power due to his wrists.
Hopkins and Calzaghes career are pretty similar if you look at it both 10 year division champions both fought iffy opponents but both have a few good wins the only real difference is that hopkins in alot further along in his career and to be honest he's suffered abit because of that.
Good Point.
But in all honesty where ever you see Mr Warren you'll see low threat opponents.
But no discredit to Calzaghe as I feel he is a true champion even though he hasn't felt the urge to dabble in other weight divisions. But with Hopkins he doesn't really gain much as if he beats him the critics will just reply with "Hopkins was on the wrong side of the hill"... I think for Calzaghe to get the respect he deserves and craves he'll have to do more than beat todays Hopkins... But with saying that if its another "lacy" landslide then it'll be a very interesting time on these forums the following morning but then question arises who next?
He is a great fighter everyone knows that but he has the chance to do something Roy Jones couldn't do because of the lack of competiton he had in his prime and that is to become a top 5 fighter ever. The Welterweight division is really strong at the moment yet he decides to fight a fighter he has already beaten just to get more money, not add to his legacy.
What you think?
Absolutely agree...
The only way Mayweather will earn BACK my respect after taking this fight is if it turns out to be a "Keep active Money earner" and he's waiting for the likes of Cotto to become more mainstreamly known and then takes the Cotto fight straight off the back of this one...
His father is not english, he's Jamaican. Haye holds the english in such regards that he wears a big ass Cyprus flag on his shorts. Another fake english fighter.
He's just paying respect to where he spends a lot of time, at the end of the day he needs to go back to that country to live & train its only right that he shows credit and it also builds a non english fanbase...
One thing i like about Haye is he doesn't show any form of respect for frank warren and his hype machine... The guy as an excellent opportunity to do something big in the HW division...
So he aint another fake English fighter at all, he's just a fighter with an opportunity in front of him that will get hated on by people like you who don't know no better...
Because if a fighter calls out another boxer and that fight isn't what the promotor sees as a high reward low risk fight, it plants a seed in the fans mind therefore brings pressure to the staff to make the proposed fight actually come to fruit. From a true pugilists point of view this sucks, but like mentioned earlier promoters main goal is to make money first then make the fans happy a close 2nd.
Think of it like public relations, as much as its about the image you show inside the ring to be a profitable and marketable fighter your image outside the ring as to shine too, now calling out fighters and the fight never happening would make you look like a dodger therefore lessening your stock.
Don King is probably the most controlling promotor on the planet as we've seen many times before its his way or the highway, where other promotors sometimes actually listen to want the fans & their fighters want to a certain degree...
The whole boxing promoting theory is a bit fuked, as you'd think making the fans happy by giving them the fights they wanna see would make the most money... the only thing is the promotors are looking for the longevity out of their fighters therefore choosing the high reward low risk fights until its almost unavoidable and even then in some situations the promotion team will pay "ducking" money...
It as to be Fraudley Harrison coming back from the Olympics... The BBC seriously thought he was gonna be the next Lewis or bigger... Ha Ha... they haven't even bothered with boxing since... Nice one Fraudley!
Being self taught is what makes him special, his footwork and defensive skills would be a great foundation for a trainer to start with...
The angles are definitely there, speed and aggression is also there...
Considering the other guy is more experienced and his other advantages, your guy did good to pull the victory... at times his impatience cost him but that is only due to his inexperience, but saying that due to the other guys reach he had to get inside him proving that he's got a good boxing head...
Good solid all round skills, I disagree with the other poster declaring he's far from olympic ready, has he missed this years? which would be a shame as he'd be 26 for the next olympics which is too late really as you'd like him to be well into his pro career by that stage.
But I'll definitely keep my ears & eyes open for him...
My thoughts exactly! We have no idea how either of them will react to each others style. They are both spoilers and both have great boxing skills and while Hopkins' are a bit more polished and we all know how good and smart he is, Calzaghes are underestimated and his defensive tricks and awkward angles and volume punching would be a struggle for anyone at any stage.
But, until I see how they match up against each other I don't think anyone can start talking about who wins in their relative primes. We might find out that Hopkins is still in more of his prime and Calzaghe has lost it! Although I doubt it, but most people are still underestimating Hopkins for this fight. He still has some serious fight left in him and contrary to what everyone here thinks Calzaghes 1000 punches a fight is not going to get it done. Hopkins is too smart to let someone how throws a million punches beat him just because of that. Anyway, Calzaghe has a whole lot more to offer than just a lot of punches.
Valid post...
Two spoilers, one more active, the other crafty.
A lot of people are saying that the volume of punches that Calzaghe puts out will beat Hopkins - Hopkins is not Lacey. Hopkins will not allow Calzaghe to open up on him. Hopkins rough house tactics can not be compared to Bika, Hopkins as the ability to take Joe to places he hasn't and probably doesn't want to go.
If these two met in their respected primes it would of been a classic fight.
Also nobody as touched on the fighter joe will be after he's fought hopkins win or lose... as we all know nobody fights the same after facing hopkins.
I think it is a big ask for Hatton to follow his toughest fight to date, and for that matter possible, with another very tough proposition in the form of Witter, especially with his loss being in such brutal fashion.
I hope and believe that a Witter fight will come somewhere down the line for Hatton, but in my opinion a confidence boosting fight beforehand is acceptable.
Totally understandable, BUT he's openly stated that Witter doesn't come into any of their immediate plans...
This fight is his tune up fight then he's off to the states to fight paulie, then he'll need another tune up fight then and only then the hatton camp will see witter as an option BUT he'll still be contracted to HBO to fight in the states Witter Hatton doesn't make sense in the states... it could be very marketable and profitable over here (in UK) by being billed in the same manner as the Haye Enzo fight...
These two should of met at least 5 years ago and now it doesn't even look like its gonna happen in 08... by the time they eventually meet it wont be half the fight it could be.
Hatton turned down 1 million dollars (which is probably more than Witturd made in his whole career) by having the fight at a proper time in the UK. HBO wanted to show the fight in prime time for the yanks and was willing to give Ricky 1 million on top of what he's going to make to do so and Hatton said no, because he wants kids to be able to come to the fight which they would not be able to if he was fighting at 3 in the morning. This is a tune-up fight and a thank you to his loyal fans which will most likely be his last in the UK with Hatton's three fight deal with HBO starting after Lazcano, with a unification bout with Malinaggi at MSG this year.
Then Hatton is most likely going to go after a rematch with Floyd or a fight Pacman should they both win. Witters best bet to get a fight with Hatton is to get another belt from Torres or Rees. With both Hatton and Witter fighting for DLH the fight will no doubt happen in 2009 should both fighters not lose before.
No wrong. HBO are not interested in the Lazcano fight because a week later there showing Zab Judah Vs Shane Mosley...
Hatton going for a rematch with floyd or even fighting pacman just shows he aint looking to do nowt at LW.... The Malinaggi fight is just for the money nothing else...
After the "head the ringpost" incident Hatton said he's going back down to LW to show he's still the man at 140... How does fighting Lazcano, then Malinaggi, then a rematch with floyd then Pacman prove your the man @ 140???? please help me out here because I'm having trouble seeing the obvious!!!
For him to come back to 140 and show he's the man he as to fight witter, torres, Malinaggi and even gavin rees..
Hatton is no longer the warrior he once was (or better put claimed to be) he as now become the sports personality who as the ability to pick and choose who he wants to fight. Just like de la hoya, only difference is he aint no de la hoya.
Its that obvious now even the media are acknowledging it... I wouldn't be surprised if fans actually boycott this fight, his dad was in the M.E.N stating that hatton is set to lose £1 million due to fighting over here, he could of easily pulled back that extra £1 million fighting witter. Its what the fans wanna see, Ezno & Haye got it on for the fans Hatton should take a leaf outta their book but instead he thinks he's the british De La Hoya - its pitiful!
In this case "The People" consists of Junior Witter, Junior Witter's trainer and Junior Witter's manager. Witter makes sense now for the first time, but Hatton is having a tune up, and a decent tune up as well. When Judah lost to Tszyu his comeback tune-up was Omar Weis. Trinidad's follow up to his KO loss to Hopkins was Hasine Cherifi. Frazier fought Joe Bugner after his loss to Foreman.
Taking an easier fight following a big loss is commonplace.
Come on Squeal, your an open Hatton fan, what is your honest opinion regarding the witter hatton situation?
Tune up fight is more than acceptable, but having the tune up fight over here only means one thing, his next fight will be in the states therefore it won't be against witter... If he fights paulie next then we'll have the same excuse again he needs to have a tune up fight by which time the fight won't even be relevant...
I think Witter should just give up on this fight and admit that he's been ducked by our so called "peoples fighter that fights for his fans".
Naseem aint ever gonna get anywhere near 126, 130,135,140,147lbs...
His skills were depleting from the moment he left Ingle.... at the age of 34-35 his reflexes are that bad he can't even brake in his car when he needs to!
All this talk about countering 6 punch combos??? wtf..
If you counter the first punch effectively then they aint gonna be no other 5 punches...
This fight could be a classic.... styles make fights and we have two very different styles, but at the same time bhop nullifies his opponents making his fights appear boring...
This discredits the original record holder... McKechnai should of been given an 8 count in the interview - what type of fighter states his fight plan is too make it out of the 1st round....
This is exactly why boxing is in the state it is.
Khan won every round.
That guy landed some sneaky rights. He could be in trouble against someone who can really bang.
But they have to be able to really bang. Khan is fuckin huge. Look how thick he is. He should be able to take a decent shot.
someone like willy limond?
It's awful to see you're whining about the British referees! :crying: :bottle:
There are good and bad ones everywhere - remember what a terrible job Cortez did in the Hatton vs. Mayweather fight?
No he's absolutely right, tonights reffing was terrible...
Dave Parris gave Matthews a hell of a lot of chances.... the old new mouth guard trick bought matthews at least an extra crucial 20 seconds.
Khan should of least got a point deducted, and Kristjansen should of been giving some extra time to recover, Kristjansen voluntarily took the knee and was clean hit with a power shot.
But it as to be expected on Warren card.
Stop it please...
Pacman would floor Khan with his first clean shot... Khan is nothing but a very good prospect... he has so much to learn, he hasn't been in there with a fighter who really wants to take him out (nor has he been in with a fighter who can punch)... everyone he's fought so far have just settled to stick around (and are far from knockout merchants)... and haven't gone at him the same way he's gone for them..
Khans just come out of his 17th fight a seasoned vet in Pacman would highlight every flaw that khan has within the first opening rounds.
Yes Khan as height & reach advantages, but if st clair can take Khan 12 rounds fighting defensively what would pacquiao do to him?
I think this too.
He is one of the biggest lightweights I have ever seen.
Did you see him when he was walking into the arena?
I think he might weigh more than me when he isn't fighting. About 11 and half stone.
No chance Khan fights to frequently to be able to put on over a stone and a half between fights... His physique is in excellent condition his body fat percentage must be under 10-12%...
I see him around quite a lot and he stays in shape...
I absolutely agree with regards to him being to big for this weight, the problem will come when he's waiting around for the bigger fights (bigger fights=bigger build ups)
But most Americans are like that, I spoke to an american girl once, telling her where i was from she replied "oh manchester in london uk!"
But tbh this is boxing - it isn't a level geography is it?
