I had it this way
1: Floyd
2: Oscar
3: Either way
4: Oscar
5: Floyd
6: Floyd
7: Oscar
8: Floyd
9: Floyd
10: Floyd
11: Either Way
12: EIther way
Overall I thought Oscar was very competitive throughout watching it again but that Floyd was a close but clear winner. I can see how someone could have scored the fight a draw if they gave all the close rounds to Oscar. I fail to see how anyone could have scored it for Oscar.
Very simple, Zab Judah is far more well known than Antonio Margarito. He brings a natural fan base of high rollers to vegas with him and probably was a comparable draw to Mayweather going in. Why then would Arum pay Floyd more for fighting Margarito who drew 30K PPV buys for his last fight than he did when he fough Judah. It makes no economic sense unless Arum is either getting some options from Mayweather on future fights or is going to demand refs and judges that are highly favorable to Margarito maximizing the chances of his 8 million dollar gamble working
I don't know why anyone thinks Spinks would give Mayweather any trouble. Mayweather is at least as quick, punches harder and most importantly lasts A LOT longer. Judah wore this guy down. After about 5 rounds, Spinks would be gassed and then Mayweather would just cut off the ring and finish Spinks off.
The Spinks fight could actually make a fair bit of money. He can sell out the savis center so you have a paid attendance of 22K right off the bat, plus since spinks is now a champion, you could plausibly put it on PPV. One element is missing however, drama. Spinks matches up disastrously with Mayweather. There is not a single area other than a 1.5 inch height edge where spinks has an edge. Besides, spinks ran out of gas fighting Karmazin. That would be disastrous against someone like Mayweather who could probably go 20 rounds without hitting the wall.
It is ridiculous to say this fight would not bring in more revenue next year if Margarito made the right moves. Imagine he fought and beat Judah (in mexico I guess) and then Hatton or Cotto. He would then be a legitimate star, not just a black box and would have a large fan following. At that point the fight would make sense for Mayweather as something more than a default option.
Ali G: Why are we here watching people wrap presents?
Peter: Not that kind of boxing, you will know what boxing is when that fat guy over there falls after I punch him.
Ali G: Respect to my main man Samuel Peter!
I have one question, RJJ 14 Roberto Duran 15. You cannot take such a list seriously. Roberto Duran dominated a division for a decade, split two bouts with the naturally bigger sugar ray past his prime and was still competitive even as he moved ridiculously high up. The guy was incredible. Best pressure fighter of all time. No way is Jones even close to him.
Also, no Monzon, he only went a decade as middleweight champion and beat Benvenutti and Griffith. I dont think you could have argued if he had been top 5.
Monzon wasn't monzon till he beat nino. And to suggest that nino was not a legend is nuts, he beat emile griffith two of three times. Great technical boxer. Won the Val barker trophy in the 1960 olympics.
True $100 would be a lot per ticket given the state of the Argentine economy, but consider two things.
1) Argentina is a huge sports loving nation and this would be as big a sporting event as the nation has hosted problem since the 1978 World Cup (may be leaving something out, but you get the idea). THere would be huge enthusiasm for this type of event, probably a lot more than for the Stones concert discussed earlier (love the Stones but they must have played BA sometime fairly recently).
2) THere are still a fairly large number of wealthy argentines, many of whom could spend 500-2k for ring side seats inflating the gate even more.
Finally, the real issue is would Floyd have the guts to do this and this would take major guts. Fighting a tough guy to begin with in front of 80K partisans would be a very gutsy move. I would have far more respect for Mayweather if he did this than if he fought Margarito anywhere outside of the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. However, I think the upside for this would be huge. Boxing was at its zenith when megafights were fought in huge stadiums. Can you imagine what the atmosphere would be like? If Floyd won in this type of an environment he could become an international superstar.
Carlos Monzon is stunningly low. He beat Griffith once, Benvenutti twice and was the middleweight champ for a decade. I have seen him in the top ten on many lists. Bert usually has a good reason for this stuff, I would be curious to see what he writes.
The Pope
Muhammed Ali
Pele
Tiger Woods
George W Bush
Michael Jordan
Bill Clinton
Probably the seven most recognizable faces on earth. Tyson is not even in the same universe
I am concerned that if Floyd Sr. trains Oscar, Oscar may learn some flaws that no one else has had access to. This is what makes the fight so compelling. You could see either fighter KOing (or in Floyd's case stopping) the other. I do think that Mayweather will find a way but this will be his toughest fight so far.
My point is he has to fight somebody who the boxing public has some amount of respect for. Basically what arum seemed to be trying to do was to protect him and pray he would somehow beat Mayweather and become a huge star. He has not done enough to deserve the opportunity. Mitchell could be a means of building a resume and providing a point of reference for evaluating how he would do against Mayweather.
To possibly compete against Mayweather, he would have to move in much more elusively. Collazo is better than I think we gave him credit for, but if Hatton does not move better coming in, he is going to get destroyed as he moves up in class. Hatton fans need to understand that he is like any other fighter. He can't just charge in oblivious to punches coming in. They effect him like any other fighter.
JR needs to hae a heart to heart with SR. Explain that A) Oscar won't knock him out no matter what SR tellls him and B) that this is a way for both of them to become filthy rich. If that fails, maybe he should start talking shit about his father till he is angry enough to train Oscar for th fight
