Back in the day, like the late 1800's, early 1900's, fighter just wore a plain cloth nappy style pair of trunks to the fight, but these days you see fighters wearing all kinds of weird attire, like Sharmba Mitchell wearing a skirt, Prince Naseem wearing some sort of leopard skin rug, today they're all brightly coloured, flash looking etc, but back in the beginnings it was like the fighter meant more than the image.
Also something which has changed dramatically is the sponsors. For example, if you watch some grainy footage of a fight from the early 20th century, you'll see the crowd, the ring, two fighters and the referee. Today you will see, the crowd, 5-10 sponsors hanging above the ring, sponsors on the corner pads, sponsors on the ropes, a ridiculous amount of sponsors on the canvas, two fighters with sponsors on their shorts, maybe even a fighter with a website painted on his back, and th referee. When it gets to the point were there giant sponsor in the middle of the ring is making fighters constantly slip over, I think something should be done about that.
Thumbs were attached to gloves sometime in the late 40s or early 50s so that you could no longer try to use the thumb to poke your opponents eye.
Sugar Ray Leonard introduced thumbless gloves in the 1980s after he hurt his retina.
i remember in the old days, gloves used to be laced on around the wrist, the laces would often come off and hit the other fighter in the eye, more than a few of the old timers were blinded in this way. now they duct tape around the wrists
looks like they need a fifth 1 for hasim rahman
i notices on old fights ther was abit of a platform around the ring aswell, that seemed 2 stop fighters fallin out the ring
gloves for heavyweights have gone from 4 to 16 ounces and there thumbs are no attached to prevent thumbing groin protectors are faw more advanced (thank god!!) apart from that i dont thiunk much has changed
gloves now weight more and have more padding. this is good because their is less injury and less reason to ban the sport.
and footware has just changed in like grip and stuff. like old shoes changed to the sneakers of today, that kind of difference.
and cups have changed a lot i think
and thats it. i mean, what else could change? lol
