Looking at Dan Raphael's latest top ten divisional rankings, Floyd Mayweather is 7-0 against fighters ranked in the top ten of any division. Antonio Margarito is a mediocre 1-1. Why can't Margarito take some fights to show that he is on Mayweather's level before jumping in with him. It would make the fight far more interesting, attractive and marketable.
Right now, interest in the Margarito fight is based simply on the idea that someone with Margarito's size might be able to give Floyd some problems. Thus Floyd is presented with a no win proposition to take the fight now. Win and Margarito always lacked the skill level to beat him. Lose on a lucky punch and he would face a major set back in building himself up. Margarito needs to make this fight worthwhile and that will not happen by fighting Cosme Rivera whom one Zab Judah obliterated a few years back.
It has become clear that Bob Arum does not have much confidence in Margarito as a fighter. If he did, why not fight Judah or Hatton to make the Mayweather fight a huge attraction. Instead, Arum is trying to take a hail mary shot at creating a Mexican superstar by trying to goad Mayweather into taking a fight with someone who has not proven that he is an elite fighter. I know a lot has been made about the supposed 8 million dollar offer, but why get in bed at any price with a guy essentially betting on you to lose. Lets hope someone who has earned the chance such as Hatton steps up to the plate and fights Mayweather so that Mayweather can get a chance to enhance his reputation as a boxer and not simply maintain the reputation he has now.
Very simple, Zab Judah is far more well known than Mayweather on future fights or is going to demand refs and judges that are highly favorable to Margarito maximizing the chances of his 8 million dollar gamble working

would luv to hear the excuse behind this reasoning.
You dont think its fishy that Arum is somehow coming up with 8 million dollars to pay Floyd when Tony's last ppv did 30,000 buys?
Where is he getting that kind of money?
Very simple, Zab Judah is far more well known than Antonio Margarito. He brings a natural fan base of high rollers to vegas with him and probably was a comparable draw to Mayweather going in. Why then would Arum pay Floyd more for fighting Margarito who drew 30K PPV buys for his last fight than he did when he fough Judah. It makes no economic sense unless Arum is either getting some options from Mayweather on future fights or is going to demand refs and judges that are highly favorable to Margarito maximizing the chances of his 8 million dollar gamble working

we don't know who arum has offered fights to but since no top names have accepted we can assume on this line of reasoning that other big names have turn Marg down as well. Speculation of course but highly possible.

The 8 million dollar is extremly fishy at best.
It is ridiculous to say this fight would not bring in more revenue next year if Margarito made the right moves. Imagine he fought and beat Judah (in mexico I guess) and then Hatton or Cotto. He would then be a legitimate star, not just a black box and would have a large fan following. At that point the fight would make sense for Mayweather as something more than a default option.
like i said.

its the most money mayweather will have ever made for a fight against what most people think is a ez breezy fite for P4P. hes fought supposed better fighters for way less $ ,then y not take this one. ok, so lets say margorito hasnt proven himself like u say; that should be even more insentive for floyd to fite seeing as how he could easily whoops tony's ass, rite???
as for waiting to let margorito prove himself to better promote the fite, i know this fite would generate the same amount of revenue whether it took place today or a year from now. point being , the sooner the better. Y not November.

Take it from me as I was in your position earlier this week. I am a PBF fan and rate him as the best boxer in the sport p4p. You also make some fine points about risk/reward of this fight right now. Unfortunately, because Floyd hasn't taken on a "dangerous" opponent in 2 years, people want to see him challenge himself. Obviously most people out there would prefer several other fights such as Floyd-DLH or Mosley or Hatton or Cotto or Wright etc. Again unfortunately, none of these fights are realistic possibilities. The only real possibilities right now are Spinks; Baldomir (if he wins); or Margarito. I think we both can agree that Featherfist Spinks is no threat to Floyd. Baldomir is also not a threat and might not even fight Floyd because his sole goal in continuing to fight is $, Floyd won't be keen on a 50/50 split or anything close. Also, the fights you mention for Margarito are interesting and he is more deserving of a fight like Zab or Hatton. Unfortunately, Urkal allowed Hatton to face Collazo for the title with the agreement that he would get to face the winner so Hatton is out of the question. Zab is suspended in the US most likely due to his antics against Floyd. Basically this matchup has become one of necessity. I don't like it if I'm Floyd but I am confident he will pull it out. If he truly is the best like he claims and I think then this won't be an issue.

Can someone explain why Margarito deserves the Mayweather fight? | BoxingScene Community
