I'm interested in watching Kameda. He was being pretty highly touted in his U.S. debut in his last fight but failed to look truly impressive. His opponent was probably handpicked to showcase him
Well he won 4 rounds on two cards so he must have done something. You doth protest too much methinks.
Along with the casuals who only know two fighters.
Out of interest, why do you have Di Bella as your avy?
I've always liked Lou Dibella - he's an outspoken and standup guy and seems pretty genuine in a business that does not always lend itself to that.
I just generally think that the Abdusalamov fight took the fire out of him. He went to war that night, and it ended in a bad way.
Seen it happen before when a boxer seriously hurts their opponent. Their head just isn't in the right place anymore, and once that happens, you have no business being in a boxing ring.
No, you're right, Perez did not seem like he had his head in it all. He was ill prepared and he looked too lackadaisical and comfortable before the KO
Dumbass spoiling noobs. Blocked.
If you were so concerned about the outcome then why did come into NSB? I think the Video Trading Block should have been your first stop
You came to a boxing forum expecting not to get spoiled?
Yeah, this Mike Perez would have definitely eaten Muhammad Ali alive, with his great wins over Tye Fields and Travis Walker...
Povetkin looked like a beast here, but obviously Mike Perez's career has taken a turn for the worse after the tragic contest against Abdusalamov. His only win since then was over a journeyman.
I think Perez might want to call it a career at this point.
I always cringe when I hear fans say this about fighters who have had rough patch in their careers. The guy's a f*ckin' fighter, this is what he does for a living; this is his livelihood. The guy's just gonna quit after a couple tough loses?
The punch you don't see hurts you the most. Perez was lackadaisical, got turned around and left himself wide open for Povetkin's shot. Povetkin is a very accurate puncher and he's great at controlling the distance; this was just a display of his superior skills
Perez has had more than a "rough patch". One of his opponents fell into coma and now he has been knocked out in 1 round. There's a clear pattern.
Since the Magomed fight, Perez has faced 3 top ten opponents in Takam, Jennings and Povetkin. They were all big fights and probably good $$$, so he took them. He probably needs to go back to fighting mid level opponents to perfect his craft and get his groove back. Retirement talk, I think, is too early
I actually thought that in Danny Jacobs versus Caleb Truax and I was ringside for that so understand where you are coming from.
The way Perez reacted to the punches was so weird though. It wasn't like a JMM versus Pac first round knockdowns, he just seemed so flummoxed.
Look at his face when he is falling in the last knockdown.
I think that did him in.
Absolutely not, after the first knockdown he didn't know where he was, he should have called it off then and there, almost got him killed with the second knockdown.
You both make good points but, I think the ref should assess a fighter before automatically calling it off, except in cases where the fighter is on canvas unconscious or incapacitated.
If you look at the replay, after the Povektin celebration, Perez is seen on his feet shortly after next too the ref. Based on that, it didn't seem like he was hurt enough to have to remain on the canvas.
It was a sensational KO and I think the ref was just a little caught off guard
Does anyone think the ref waived off the fight prematurely? After the second knockdown, it looked like the ref automatically waived the fight? Is this what happened? Why didn't he give Perez the count?
I don't think so. To me he honestly looked like he didn't know where he was.
The way he fell and stumbled both times looked so bad, I think the ref freaked a little.
I thought the call was fine.
Many on here were mad becuz they thought he could've gotten killed had it gone on.
Hyperbole sure, but safety first.
I don't want to see a guy get damaged but it wasn't like Perez was lying on the canvas sparked out
I think the ref should've at least assessed him before automatically waiving the fight off - practically before Perez even hit the canvas. The ref rushed to judgement and didn't give Perez a chance to demonstrate if he was in fact OK to fight or not OK. You give the fighter the benefit of doubt before pulling the plug so quickly
We've all watched fights where there were 'flash knockdowns' early on in the fight - only for the fighter who got knocked down to comeback and make a fight of it.
Does anyone think the ref waived off the fight prematurely? After the second knockdown, it looked like the ref automatically waived the fight? Is this what happened? Why didn't he give Perez the count?
It's also possible that Perez wasn't mentally there for this fight and got caught very early.
Yes, Perez got turned around and wasn't expecting to get clocked square on the jaw.
Povetkin always looks sharp and he's a very accurate puncher. There was nothing unnatural about the way he looked tonight
I voted "no" back in May 2015. As a matter of principal I usually give fighters the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. Maybe need to exercise a little more skepticism in the future.
I'd say Brook because it would be the harder of the two fights (Khan being the other). I think Brook gives Mayweather his toughest challenge and legacy wise it would look good for Floyd to go out on a tough fought win, rather hhan a points shutout victory against Khan.
I just checked and your right!!
Why was it claimed elsewhere that Molina was ranked 50 something then?
Sorry I have to retract that initial assumption then which kind of negates the entire thread question.
Except I'd like to know how Molina gets pushed to number 9 after getting absolutely destroyed by Arreola and not doing anything else of note??
I think someone cited Boxrec for that ranking. On topic: Ali gave Chuck Wepner a title shot and supposedly that was the inspiration for the movie Rocky
From ESPN's Fat Dan
A few notes from around the boxing world:
• Junior middleweight titlist Demetrius Andrade (21-0, 14 KOs), who has not fought in 13 months because of general contract unhappiness -- despite co-promoters Artie Pelullo and Joe DeGuardia offering him various fights for career-high six-figure purses -- is expected to finally return in late August or September. The promoters told ESPN.com they have various possible fights in the pipeline for him, although a proposed bout on Aug. 15 at the Foxwoods resort in Mashantucket, Connecticut, is not going to happen, according to Pelullo.
One of the possible bouts Pelullo said was in the works would be for Andrade, 27, to make a trip to Australia to face 40-year-old former super middleweight titlist Anthony Mundine (47-6, 27 KOs), who has been fighting at junior middleweight for the past few years. Andrade has not fought since he made his first title defense against mandatory challenger Brian Rose, whom he knocked out in the seventh round on June 14, 2014, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
I thought everyone would have learned their lesson by now. I've been fooled by Johnson and his big talk more times than I care to remember. I always tell myself that next time I'll cut all the talk away and just watch one of his recent fights.
And then it all comes back to me again.
However, he's been training with Peter Fury and sparring Tyson and Hughie.. I figured that when he said he met a trainer who was real and told him he was a lazy piece of sht like nobody had ever done before.
That could only have been Peter.
Yes, I heard all the interviews of Kevin stating that. However, I think his training camp was only 4 weeks. Putting things in perspective though, 4 weeks is not gonna make up for being lazy for the last 5-8 years. A good 4 week training is good but Anthony Joshua has been in training camp since he turned pro. Anthony Joshua has been dedicated to training and developing 24/7 365 days a year, not just for the last 4 weeks.
Are we gonna get fooled again with Johnson putting in a nonperformance? Probably :lol1:
Povetkin is Wilder's mandatory challenger and Deontay has expressed his desire in facing him. Honestly, I think it's far fetched to think that Wilder will duck this man.
In what scenario would this happen? Would Wilder drop the WBC title? I don't think so. This title is like a bargaining chip or lottery ticket, cash it in for millions of dollars. If he doesn't have a title, then he has no bargaining power.
Also, I don't think Povetkin will step aside. He's fought the best opposition out to get this title shot - his title run was planned right after the loss to Klitschko.
Khan may have won the fight (I didn't think so, I scored it a draw) but Algieri is the real winner. Today everyone is talking about how impressive Chris looked last night, his trainer JDJ and potential future matchups. People are genuinely excited about his guy - Algieri came into this fight in tremendous shape and fought a really inspiring intensive and exciting fight.
If this is the new Chris Algieri I definitely want to see more of him. Love to see him in against Rios, Bradley or even rematch against Pacquaio
Why are they always so strict with weight. Whats the big deal if you come in 3 or 4 pounds over, dumb rule.
There's weight limits and classes for a reason; fighters should generally weigh about the same so that their both on an even playing field. Also, if commissions are not strict on making the contracted weight, then fighters would obviously come in at any weight that they're comfortable with.
Also, with weight divisions that are only incrementally only 7 pounds apart e.g. WW 147; Jr MW 154; every pound literally counts.
Thanks for all the helpful responses.
160.0 lbs is the upper limit, so he can't come in a fraction above it. i don't think there is a lower limit, but if you can reach a lower upper limit you will generally opt to fight at that weight
This is the core part of my question. If 160 or 175 or whatever is the upper limit, then a fighter cannot come in at anything over that weight? A gram? An ounce? 1/2 ounce? It seems very exact. Is there any acceptable margin over the upper limit?
Guess I'm the first one to say no lol... B***h is too manly for me
