Forrest??
he can't compete with a Tszyu in the amateurs...something he can't or couldn't do
Calzaghe is a great great all rounder, great speed accurate, defence can brawl stamina and a great chin.
mid to long distance swimmers supposedly have the strongest hearts with heavyweight boxers coming second in the world of pro sports. It also works out every muscle in your body which running does not.
Along with Hopkins headbutts and blows just below the belt there was also numerous times he was punching Calzaghe on the leg,not just below the belt but half way down the thigh.
Great post. Calzaghe mania is at an all time high on this board but this post puts things back into perspective. While Cal is a good fighter, Roy is an ATG & the kind of fighter that doesn't come around very often. To quote the Ice Man John Scully: "At 168 Roy was Superman." Roy was just on another level at 168 that Cal will never reach. Comparing the two is just unfair.
Your imagining Jones fighting top ten guys.I seem to remember a very competitive fight against Hopkins and Jones struggling in both Tarver fights before he was KO'd.
Why not just wait and see what happens if and when they fight. There is only 3 years between them so if Jones is in a different class he shouldn't have no problem overcoming the 3 years.
Trust me mate.. that arena will sound more like it's back in Wales than it will B-Hops home turf. And IMO B-Hop being 43 years old is going to be a big factor than sea level. Back when Hop fought Taylor he was lucky to throw 10 punches a round, This is a couple years later verse a naturally larger opponent. Age will cause Hop to be less effective. I'm not saying Calzaghe deserves no credit for beating him and I'm not saying he has to smash B-Hop. But if he wins a close to decision.. I myself will believe that a Hop from a few years ago would have won it. This is the sort of fight that may come down to a few key shots, and if Hop's endurance and reflexes are effected it's going to be a major factor.
yeah and if Calzaghe wins a close decision that would make be believe Calzaghe would beat him easily in Europe at 168,prime or not.Americans never win in UK and its nothing to do with cheering crowds and more to do with multiple factors leading up to the fight.
I'm simply saying if B-hop shows up and is half decent, and Calzaghe has a tough time beating him, I think it will be a poor reflection of Calzaghe despite the victory. Because Hop is so old now, and b/c one would have to assume if the fight is close now with a 40+ Hop, then Hop would likely win if he were still in his prime. This fight will be a complete waste however, if Hop goes in there and actually fights like a senior citizen.
Yeha right mate....and if Hopkins cannot beat Calzaghe when he has the home advantage, fighting at a sea level Calzaghe has never fought and fighting at a weight Calzaghe has never fought than how the hell would he ever beat Calzaghe in his prime without those advantages.
It was a 4-5 pts winning margin. No coincidence that the best judge with the most experience had it by 5pts to Calzaghe.Take away the flash Knockdown and its almost a shut out.Imagine what would have happened in Wales.
I would pick Joe, but it would be a really dangerous fight, Pavlik has more power than anyone Joe has fought IMO. Is also very tall. I think Joe would be able to win an easy decision, but at the same time during any time of the fight Pavlik has enough energy to end it.
Spot the Legend!!!
Think I see a very famous fighter in the crowd in that Calzaghw/Hopkins GIF.
You cant have it both ways if you want to rate your fighters as great then when they lose in their own countries under their own rules credit has to be given.I dont think there is anything between Mayweather and Calzaghe, you could make a case for either fighter as the best on the planet.
A P4P list is just a marketing tool to help American promoters to sell American based boxers, only reason Calzaghe is on it is because Lacy was hyped to the max and when he lost so so badly they had no choice but to put Calzaghe there.I think Hatton would be put at number 1 or 2 if he beat Mayweather as he is on DeLaHoyas books now.
The offer that was made was most likely 8 million, someone along the line deliberately or accidently turned that into 8 million sterling. Its less than Calzaghe made in the KEssler fight when the ammount that would be generated by Hopkins Calzaghe fight would be far more, bullshit offer.Hopkins management team are trying to find a way out of the fight whilst still letting Hopkins hold on to some marketing credibility at least in the States.
notice how you said europe, which happens to NOT be latin america, where the racial makeup is mixed up between black, white, indian and asian.
I think the clue in the word 'LATIN' Americans........just like African Americans. Both live in America but originate from other parts of the world.
If you really just want to measure just athletic ability disregarding atributes needed in sport like flair skill heart and creativeness then your best bet is to study decatheletes.American sports are way too focused on power.
In a country where you have 6 times as many whites as blacks....

The thing is American football just like basketball is geared towards speed and explosivness, traits more common in black athletes. The amount of quarterbacks is about equal to the ammount of population % in America, which needs other traits aswel.Does America have many sports where flair and skill and strength are iintegral to success because I cant think of many.
The sport played by EASILY the largest pool of players and so has to have the most accurate way to measure this question is Football or Soccer as Americans call it.The top 3 players at the moment who have been shortlisted as the greatest players in the world are Ronaldo(Portugal,White) Kaka(Brazilian,White) and Messi(Argentinian,White).Case Closed.
right.
The Kenyans are great at running, because they have no fucking roads. They are taught at a young age to use running as a form of transportation. That's been known.
It has nothing to do with the color of their skin.
I used to see all the Kenyan top distance runners run past where I worked most days, all the guy who win the medals every Olymipics all live and train in London.
Certain physical traits come from certain parts of the world like a few people have said already. An area of West-Africa no bigger than 500 miles radias produced all the finalist in the Olympic 100 metre final a few years ago.The 10,000 metres is dominated by Kenyans and Ethiopians,Throwing events are dominated by Northern-Europeans,Scandinavians dominate strongman and strength competitions. As for American sports they do seem to rely on fastest strongest biggest longest and dont really employ much skill and tactical awareness unlike other major sports around the world it seems the speed and explosivness is dominated by darker athletes whilst lighter athletes seems to produce the pure strength and tactical astute athletes so really the ideal athletes would need all these traits so a mixture would be best I'd say.
If it was a real world wide poll with experts from around the globe equally and not 80% American then I'm pretty sure Mayweather would not be considered the best guy in all the weight divisions. He is a great defensive fighter but he is abit boring and doesn't brawl or take any risks.Great sportsmen are defined by their ability to take risks, entertain and excite and still win, boxing is a fluid, creative sport its not meant to be a boring sport by numbers like golf or motor racing.I would say Calzaghe is the best guy in boxing right now,he ticks all the boxes.
how you been since 3-2-1? i don't think theres anyone out there that does tick all the boxes, i like mayweather as he never seems to make a mistke but at the mo hes boring as hell to watch, i like calz lot but i think when pressures his defence slackens abit, i really don't know this one, mosely would be up there but i dunno if hes still got it hmm....
haha...you must be in your 30's at least to remember the hardest damn quiz show ever on TV.
I like Mayweather aswel, was blown away with the Gatti fight but now so much now with hindsight. The thing is picking the best fighter is not easy because different weight divisions vary so much with regards speed, stamina and power so you either pick with the domination of his own particular division or you just pick with your heart,on both accounts Calzaghe is top for me.Look at other sports Micheal Jordan wasn't regarded as the best cos he scored most points he was a showman aswel and took risks to entertain people loved him for it.If you look at Maradona he completely dominated his own division or era and entertained, you have to do both to be regarded as great.
I dont see why he cannot KO Hopkins,he had Kessler hurt until the ref and then the bell saved him.I think Hopkins would be easier to KO at 175 for Calzaghe.
