From the London Daily Mail:
"WBC/WBA/WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe admitted to the London Daily Mail that he intentionally hit Bernard Hopkins low in the second round of their fight Saturday, but says Hopkins was faking it in the tenth when he went to the canvas from an apparent light shot below the belt from the Welshman. "What a crap actor," said Calzaghe. "He looked like he'd been shot in the balls, not hit. When I hit him there in the second round, that was proper deliberate. He'd knocked me down in the first so I had to give him a dig, didn't I? But the tenth — that was a lie, that one.....he's a cheat. He took three minutes off when I didn't touch him and he needed a rest. Joe Cortez should have been firmer. Hopkins is just a spoilt little girl, isn't he?""
Just to reignite discussion.
Doesn't matter if it's true or not. Nearly every professional fighter has given a bang below the belt intentionally. Usually in retaliation for dirty tactics used by their opponent. In this case it was probably justified. The KD in the first round was from a good punch, followed by a good shove. Not to mention all the low blows from Hopkins throughout the entire fight.

According to that site, one of their journalists is 114 years old. It's also a beta site. I'm guessing it's not the most reliable source.
The arrogance. He's arrogant enough to admit it, like it's something he can do if someone hits him hard enough.
It works for Cotto too, just ask Zab...
Big deal. You watch enough boxing and you expect fighters to bend the rules.
Especially against guys like Hopkins.
The source is fightnews by the way.
Who got it from the London Daily Mail and cited it as a source.
For fuck's sake can't anyone see that this was made up! There is no such paper as the London Daily Mail! There is the Daily Mail, but there hasn't been a London Daily Mail for about a hundrd years!

Bottom line is, even if it was true, so what. The fact is the majority of fighters have done such things, broken the rules a little, yet it often goes un noticed, or even when it is, it's not talked about.
Here we have a pretty minor low blow, which is common, and people are jumping on it, hoping for it to be some kinda excuse to attack Joe or cite as a reason for Hopkins losing.
Lol, it's hilarious, get it together man. Bernard was hitting low, got the legs, faked a low blow, wasted time to his advantage, fought after the bell, lol, like in another league, and people pounce on one thing which is in comprehensively minor by comparison, and rife in boxing. Desperate.

Source.......
to the people complaining about this.. have you EVER watched a hopkins fight before?? hips back low etc etc he punches them all AND in the past admits it. he is a master of getting away with a cheeky shot to wear an opponent down.
some people on here are muppets
AS STATED THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS THE LONDON DAILY MAIL.
THE THREAD STARTED MADE UP THE STORY TO MAKE HIM AND SOME OF YOU FEEL A LITTLE BETTER ABOUT ONE OF YOUR BOXERS GETTING OWNED AND BUMMED
Along with Hopkins headbutts and blows just below the belt there was also numerous times he was punching Calzaghe on the leg,not just below the belt but half way down the thigh.

Hmm, what about the three whacks that B-Hop gave Calzaghe when Joe Cortez was behind them (as they were clinched and Cortez was separating them)? I don't remember the round, but it was towards the beginning. B-Hop DELIBERATELY hit Joe low, so I wouldn't be surprised if this was in retaliation for that. He even said in the Mirror article that he "gave Bernard some of his own medicine" because he was being dirty.
To be fair I'll eat my words to a certain extent, the UK's Daily Express mentions Joe talked about it, but as far as quotes nothing solid really. I think there may be a few press people exaggerating it.
It's quite possibly Joe did intentionally hit low in a split second, but it was weak and more if it was meant, demonstrated to Nard he was willing to rough it too.
I find it odd we'd give one possibly weak low blow from a man whom has hardly ever broken to rules, on a guy that breaks the rules and flat out cheats more in the average minute. Very odd.
The only articles I can find on the Daily Mail website are the following:

This thread is therefore bullshit.
