Lemieux was a more exciting and more popular fighter than Jacobs. Also Lemieux held a real belt.
Jacobs in his biggest fight did 267k Viewers on Showtime, and no that was not a PPV. :lol1:
GGG has to carry that PPV by himself, but i hope its on regular HBO so more ppl can watch.
I still think 225k PPV buys is realistic for a Golovkin-Jacobs fight, GGG's profile has risen since last year and now holds 3 of the main belts as opposed to the 1 major one he had last year. Also I think Jacobs is seen as the biggest challenge to Golovkin at middleweight until Canelo makes the move up.
It's hard to tell whether 300k figure is good or bad in this case. On the one hand Canelo had almost everything working against him, the opponent, the undercard and his recent decision to hand over his title and put off the biggest fight he could make for at least 12 months, unlike Mayweather and Pacquiao who used the possibility of a showdown as bait for all of their fights from 2010-2014.
On the other hand, Canelo has gotten about as much exposure as anyone by fighting the most recognisable fighters in the sport (minus Pacquaio), yet without these other names his figures have continued to fall even as he fights on the biggest fight nights of the boxing calendar.
If the event did sell 300k then I think Canelo is probably the only fighter that could have pulled off these figures given all the circumstances surrounding it. The question is whether his appeal is going down and what this means for a potential showdown with Golovkin whose appeal at least appears to be rising. We will probably have to wait and see what happens when Canelo fights again, presumably against a more well known opponent in May, possibly David Lemieux, to determine whether his numbers are being affected by his choice of opponent and/or his temporary(?) refusal to fight Golovkin.
Nice poll, it has to be one of the 4 options listed, though I'm not 100% sure about which one it is. However, Jacobs doesn't seem to be particularly excited about getting the opportunity he has been presented with. He is getting the chance to become a unified world champion and #1 middleweight in the world, with the guarantee of huge paydays in the future if he wins, all things that you would think would be every boxers' childhood dream.
Jacobs' has not pursued this fight since winning the WBA regular belt in 2014 and since then has been vague about what it would take to get him to fight Golovkin. Whenever he talks about it, it seems like he sees it as a chore which he must be compensated for, rather than an opportunity for him and his opponent to elevate themselves.
We will know his reasons as the October 22 deadline gets closer.
Maybe I read it wrong but I could've sworn they said they would make the decision Monday. I gotta find that thread, but I'm almost certain they said they would make the decision known on Monday. Or maybe I read it as they were releasing the info Monday.
There may be conflicting reports, I just read an article that said they'll release the splits after the purse bid gets called which would be October 13th.
Tomorrow is the deadline. They said they'd release the purse split yesterday. That never happened. You gotta remember this is the same organization that said they'd call the GGG/Jacobs mandatory in May. They're a little slow
The WBA stated that they would not disclose the percentage splits until after the purse bid has been completed.
It is looking like an October 22 purse bid will be called, though it is unclear if the fight will still go ahead.
Good point, I think the ring rules state that this can happen if the committee believe that the 2 contenders are worthy. I don't think there has been any news of this yet though, they might be waiting for Stevenson to fight the winner before they hand it out.
Not to say this isn't true, but if it were true, then why did GGG try to stop him in the 2nd round?
This is just me, but somebody that you want to give a prolong beating too, after you drop them off a huge double left hook, you don't follow up with it and try to KO them or get a ref stoppage only in the 2nd round. That's just me.
I can't remember if that's what happened or not but I was just offering that up as a possible reason since he directly addressed that question in that interview (at around the 4:00 mark). Maybe if you've seen his response it might answer your question but either way it is hard to tell, until someone can push him to the limit we don't know how much of what he says is true or exagerration.
What I don't understand is not only has Stevens been dropped more than Danny, but he was stopped by a guy that was 19-15 who didn't even train for the Stevens fight before he stopped him.
Secondly, Stevens got dropped and almost stopped by N'dam who is not known for power whatsover.
Stevens was saved by the bell against Jesse Brinkley.
Why was GGG only able to drop him once, but couldn't finish him off like Marcos Primera did? Weird.
If you have a look at the Golovkin vs Lemieux Face off with Max Kellerman, Golovkin mentions that he was slowly punishing Stevens as a way of making him respect boxing because of the comments which Stevens made before the fight. Whether you choose to believe this is a matter of opinion but it is a frightening prospect for any fighter if in fact he was telling the truth.
When it comes to the Jacobs fight, I doubt that we'll see Golovkin use this tactic as I think Jacobs' power is enough for any fighter to respect and not feel comfortable to play around with. I think we will see both fighters trying to take the other out as early as possible and trying to avoid taking as many shots as possible. In other words, we should see the best out of both fighters in this fight, so I expect a knockout.
I think it will be close but I voted under. Remembering how Floyd vs Berto sold around 400-500k, much less than his normal numbers due to both the viewed mismatch and also discontent from his last fight, similar to this fight, tells me that the numbers will be well down on his average.
So what happened to the "inside information" people were trying to pass off a couple weeks ago that this fight was signed and all but announced, lol? I guess the random dude from the MMA site didn't quite have the right info, did he?
Or maybe he does and everybody else is wrong. I'm hoping that's the case.
No, that's why the WBA has been ordering the regular champions to face the 'super' champions in order to remove secondary title holders in all divisions. Less belts is usually a good thing.
None of these fighters are huge draws in the sport right now period...No one is doing monster numbers at all. So why are people on here arguing over numbers instead of just wanting fighters to take concessions to make themselves a huge star?
Fight the best, take the risks and you will be rewarded..say what you want about Mayweather and Pacquiao..but they went through hell to get to where they are in this sport...They both bend over backwards and were the b-sides in order to get what they wanted in this sport. These fighters are spoiled little b1tches who want everything handed to them without any risk at all.
Exactly, it seems these days the toughest times for a boxer are when they are an amateur and have to face the best in the world.
Pollo vista, how can you blame this on GGG?
There are so many different accounts of what is happening but nothing has come out of GGG or Jacobs mouths, not even Abel Sanchez has said anything. Very bizarre situation.
Jacobs vs Quillin was the biggest fight that could be made at MW without GGG in the ring. Yet it only did 400k in viewers on Showtime and failed to sellout. Why is it that Jacobs isn't a draw? Is he proof of Haymows inability to build stars? He has speed, power, finishes fights, and has the best back story in all of boxing. Yet this doesn't translate to being a draw. Why?
The Quillin-Jacobs numbers were probably affected more by Quillin's actions leading up to the fight rather than Jacobs. Quillin had been WBO champion but gave up his belt and and career high payday when Rocnation won the pid for the Quilin-Korobov fight. Then when Lee stepped in and beat Korobov, Quillin had a chance to get the belt back but blew it by coming in heavy and managed only a draw. Also, Jacobs himself was only the #2 WBA middleweight after Golovkin so the fight was never really a world title fight. I think Jacobs is doing well for someone who has not won a legitimate world title in any weight division, if he beats Golovkin his stardom would likely take off.
Yeah, unless it's like life changing money it's a horrible idea. Who is Khurtsidze's manager? Dude is coming off an exciting upset win that got people interested in him and instead of capitalizing on it, or even just keeping him busy, he goes without fighting for a year. Terrible job running his career.
His promoter is Lou Dibella and his advisor is Keith Connolly.
In the article below, Connolly claimed that they were prepared to go to purse bids.
http://www.ri ngtv.com/482439-wbo-directs-saunders-khurtsidze-negotiate-purse-bid-ordered/
I can understand why Khurtsidze hasn't been active, he has had the #1 spot for almost a year and has waited for the WBO to order the mandatory. I don't think that it was worth the risk for him to fight tune up fights and lose his mandatory spot, especially when his training partners include Khytrov, Derevyanchenko and Jacobs, having said that I don't think he would have waited as long if he knew that it would take so long to get a title fight.
Hahah... Aye, that is true for Saunders.
I was talking about Khurtsidze, doe. In response to another poster saying it was a bad move for Khurtsidze to take the step-aside money, and how if he beat BJS, he'd have lucrative fights against Eubank Jr., and Murata.
I think it's a brilliant move, because really, how big is a fight for Khurtsidze against Eubank Jr.? If that fight were to go to purse bids, it's in the mid to upper six-figures, tops...
I guess the value of the WBO belt right now is that both Canelo and GGG want it and would be willing to offer a large sum to secure the belt. For GGG this would give him all of the belts and basically force a Canelo fight. For Canelo it would offer him a chance to claim a legitimate belt and have more negotiating power for a potential GGG fight.
The other fighters at middleweight know this also and therefore if fighters like Murata or Eubank jr want to fight for the belt, they'd have to offer quite large amounts also, unless they are the mandatory.
It depends on how much the step-aside fee is and also how much Khurtsidze rates his chances of beating Saunders, which as I said earlier, he'll never have a better chance to get a title, let alone one so valuable, as he is not getting any younger.
Even if he takes the money, he'll still have to beat a highly ranked fighter for the interim belt, then may face more delays as the WBO puts Canelo as mandatory as they did in January or sanctions a unification bout.
If he could only beat Saunders, he'd be in a very strong position to demand a very high payday from 2 of the biggest names in the sport right now. Maybe he just wants to take the guaranteed money but he is leaving a lot on the table by walking away from this opportunity and it will not be as easy as you think for him to get a title shot.
It's a brilliant move...
The step=aside is likely low six-figures... maybe mid six-figures depending on how much the big money fight Saunders has is worth.
If he were to go to a purse bid against Saunders, as the challenger, he's only entitled to 25%! That purse bid would be only worth mid to maybe upper six-figures.
SO basically he'd get the same amount fighting for the title, as he gets for DOING NOTHING!
He also gets to keep his place, and gets a shot for the interim title, another fight where he can make low six-figures.
So in the next 5 months he can make half a million dollars by fighting just once.
He wins the interim, he just stays where he was, and awaits to become the mandatory for likely a bigger money fight like GGG, or Canelo. Or, he could just become the full champion by default.
I don't think anyone has listed a figure but $500,000 is very hard to believe given that Golovkin was paid this amount as step aside money for the Canelo-Cotto fight to be made.
If he were to beat Saunders he would then be able to face Canelo, Murata or Eubank jr for a very good payday. Unless he thinks his chances of beating Saunders are not good or the amount paid to step aside is as high as you say, then I think this is a strange move. I find it hard to believe that he wouldn't fancy his chances of beating Saunders after Saunders' last performance.
I can't understand why Khurtsidze would take step aside money in this situation when it would seem that a win against Saunders would bring about a fight with Canelo, who was installed above Khurtsidze as the WBO mandatory before he signed to fight Chavez jr. What also doesn't make sense is that even if Khurtsidze manages to win an interim title fight, it's pretty likely that the WBO will just give the next shot to Canelo, or possibly sanction a unification bout, leaving him waiting once again. At 37, with Billy Joe coming off a terrible performance in his last fight, it is hard to imagine him getting a better opportunity to win a world title than this in his life. I can't imagine him being offered an amount that would make stepping aside a good idea so I can only call this a strange move if it's true.
Zurdo is the future of Top Rank, they better promote this good looking Mexicano on HBO, he can speak English or is learning and is tall dark and handsome, he is awkward and has long reach and power.
He is younger than GGG and if there is a marketable transfer of power fighter its Zurdo.
http://suljosblog.com/suljos/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/ZurdoGR01.jpg
So why would he refuse a fight with Korobov? I don't doubt his ability but maybe he doubts his own.
GGG vs Saunders isn't gonna happen anyway. The WBO is catering Alvarez and they want that belt in his hands.
True, the WBO is catering Alvarez but the reasons that the fight will take place is: a) Saunders has to make a defence of his title and his mandatories have been given step aside money already and b) It's been said that the Kazakh government are putting up a large amount of money to stage the fight to promote their expo, the WBO cares about money more than Canelo.
Golden Boy are just looking for a way to weasel out of the Golovkin fight again, they can't make any legitimately good fights without having the WBO belt. They know that if Golovkin gets that 4th belt he'll have much more leverage in negotiations, whereas without it, Golden Boy can make the excuse that they don't need the fight.
That's not true...ward being a gold medalist and having not lost since he was a kid has been brought up plenty of times. It's just not as noticeable when it's a fighter you support. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it btw...it's just irrelevant when discussing professional accomplishments.
I've heard the Andre Ward hasn't lost since he was 12, but check out his page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_AIBA_American_2004_Olympic_Qualifying_Tournament
It shows that Ward got a silver medal in the Light Heavyweight class. Can someone explain what this means, did he lose or was there no final? It doesn't take away from his great boxing career but it does make me question the claim of being undefeated since 12.
I'm a hardcore GGG fan and am willing to fork over the money to see it but even I said when it was signed it probably shouldn't be on PPV. I don't think Jacobs is much of a draw at all and GGG is really just a solid HBO draw.
Even though a lot of us hardcore fans are excited I could see why a casual with no emotional attachment would choose to skip it. Might be #1 and #2 but it's also a guy who ko's everyone and a guy people say is chinny. I'm looking forward to it and expect a fun fight but it's not exactly a toss up to most.
I think GGG needed this fight after the mismatches of 2016 (though Kell Brook had some success). Even if they lose money on this fight, which I doubt they will, this will be a good investment because it will open up a lot of big fights for GGG. If he loses, it will set him back a long way, I doubt Canelo or any other top fighters will be looking to fight him then.
And this is the biggest fight they can make, why does it have to be on a national holiday?
Besides seeing him get crushed by GGG could put a dampner on celebrations.
The biggest fighters fight on the biggest dates, lesser fighters won't challenge them either as their own ratings would suffer hugely if they tried fighting on the same date as a big drawcard. I'm not sure when the Mexican holidays became the biggest dates in American boxing but these are the dates Floyd Mayweather established as days for big boxing bouts, at least in terms of PPV numbers.
It says the top 2 from each division qualify. Not sure how they signify gold vs silver if both guys won their matches.
I know that the top 2 qualify but I checked the winners profile on boxrec and it says that he won in the final by walkover, so maybe Ward was injured or felt for some reason that he didn't need to fight in the final. Nonetheless, isn't that still considered a loss?
No, it's not.
If you are going to reply this comment please quote the other comment regarding this.
If you get injured before a pro fight, the fight gets cancelled, but if you get injured in an amateur tournament, the tournament has to go without you.
So that isn't a lost, Ward won the gold so he was the best fighter in his division in the entire world.
I think Ward was out of boxing before the olympic qualification so that's why he was happy with being qualified and left the tournament without facing the rival in the final to get some rest to the olympics.
It was my own comment which showed the results of the 2004 AIBA americas qualification tournament from Wikipedia.
I was just trying to clarify how he could have come second if he hasn't lost since he was 12. I can understand why it isn't considered a loss but it is a bit misleading when most people could say they have never lost a fight because they have never fought. Nonetheless, he hasn't been beaten since he was 12 and has won major tournaments along the way.
GGG has rubio, geale, macklin, simon, and ishida. All 5 except for rubio have never been koed by one shot prior to facing ggg.
GGG has more one punch KO's than that but others who also would have would include Deontay Wilder, Adonis Stevenson, Sergey Kovalev, Wladimir Klitschko....other than that I'd guess maybe Jermall Charlo and Mikey Garcia. There are probably a few more that I haven't listed.
If Golovkin gets a 1st round KO and Gonzalez either loses or scrapes out a close win then Golovkin might have a shaky claim on the #1 spot until the Ward-Kovalev rematch.
