Jacobs vs Quillin was the biggest fight that could be made at MW without GGG in the ring. Yet it only did 400k in viewers on Showtime and failed to sellout. Why is it that Jacobs isn't a draw? Is he proof of Haymows inability to build stars? He has speed, power, finishes fights, and has the best back story in all of boxing. Yet this doesn't translate to being a draw. Why?
Lets not get into get into the argument of "But he said 154-168" because it went both ways and only someone with an agenda can pick a clear side on who's wrong in that sense. What we do know is who was actively fighting and who wasn't. Every fighter believes they can beat anyone and as far as I know, GGG has always shown a lot of respect for Ward as a fighter. I don't see what the problem is with 164. It's right in the middle. Is it GGG's fault if someone can't meet him halfway? Not everyone is in a position to have to bend to Ward's will. Why didnt Ward fight Chad at 75? This isn't about defending GGG in the least its about calling it like it is. Yeah, Abel is completely full of s hit but Ward/Virgil haven't been far behind. When people say theyre open to such and such weight class/fighters while comfortably making/dominating their own class it should be taken with a grain of salt that its probably open to negotiations. GGG isnt going to 54 for Canelo or 68 for Ward. Same way Ward isnt going to 160 despite wanting to fight a 160 fighter. You've been around the sport long enough you should know how the politics and talking goes. I dont for a second believe Ward or GGG are afraid of each other but neither camp is comfortable enough to give the other fighter an advantage and thats why the fight didnt happen. Its pretty much that simple.
I don't see what Jr or "Mexican style" had to do with anything or any of the fighters mentioned but ok? If we're on the topic Jr is more (or was) popular than all of the fighters mentioned. Sure, we all know hes not that good but I'd still watch his fat ass fight anyone. He got beat down by whats basically a 54 pounder in Sergio (albeit a great one)who here is surprised that he got tooled when he fought someone good at 75? Hell..Fonfara and Ward is a nice scrap.
Good post, surprising you wasted it on that lame troll. Chavez is too big and lazy to make 168, how much credit does he get for getting smashed by a tune-up and quitting at 172
Americans love their zero... They aren't really good fans anyway.
When I see mayweather fight someone, often I don't see passion as much as say Mexicans, brits, phillipinos.
Badou Jack should be bigger, but maybe his lost ****ed things up? This is why I see so many duckers scared to lose
I don't recall Jacobs or Quillin stating 154-168 is easy, or calling out the best 168-175 returning at a catch at 164. So no, they have no business with Beterbiev. The closest we have was a guy called Chavez Jr. WHO went up against a top 5 LHW named Fonfara and went 9 rounds. I guess that's Mexican style, regardless of the outcome, and was still showboating for the fans while getting handed. Fonfara said he was a tough sob.
Regarding Ward, he already said publicly he plans to finish his legacy at HW. So we will hold him to that and wish him the best of luck.
Or did Ward say HW was easy?

Want big money without fighting anybody. Want to be famous without fighting anybody. It's like a pretend world over there.
I think it's simple - these fighters/managers pretend that all these fighters will build star power fighting once or twice a year and if they fight once or twice its sub-par. So by the time a marquee matchup is signed like Jacobs/Quillin - everyone is over it. Especially that by the time they lace it up, GGG has steamrolled 7 opponents, while Jacobs/Quillin sound/look like they're trying to weasle their way out of a fight.
These dudes need to fight 3-4x a year to stay in the public consciousness. Win or lose, good performances keep you relevant. If you are a "fan" that jumps off the wagon after a loss - then you are a loser casual. Peyton Manning doesn't lose fans after an L because there is next week and I realize that's an apples to oranges comparison, but the point is that bouncing back and remaining in the headlines keeps him and others relevant. These fighters just need to be active. You lose, so what...come back and get a fight ASAP and course correct.
Literally everyone of these new generation of fighters are trying to copy the Floyd/Pac model and they simply just aren't good enough and most importantly don't want to put in that work. It's like...we really were supposed to be excited that Broner after years in the limelight was supposed to fight Maidana, even though he was a "multi-division champion" and had not fought no real good challenges - and even though he finally fought a challenge, he got beat up. If he had fought tougher fighters during the come up, he would have had the skills if he was actually legit to handle someone of Maidana's caliber. Someone like him continues to set the bar so low that we're at the point that we are excited when Thurman finally takes in my opinion his first step up to the big leagues fight in Porter - and it took like 11 years. Yeah he has some names on his resume, but they're all faded/washed up. Quintana, Guerrero, Collazo were all good-to-great names and solid on resumes, but certainly not at the time Thurman fought them. Speaking of Thurman...one fight in 2016 - he ain't that good to be sitting. Next he comes back, sometime in 2017 and nobody will care. Momentum from a very good fight w/ Porter goes away and he basically has to restart.
Don't get me started on Garcia...he had a string of some good-to-great fights, probably amongst this new crowd one of the best resumes around. Fighting some faded guys, prime guys and dudes with various skillsets. To me, old school come up. Kahn, Matthyse (at his peak), Peterson and Herrera (even with a small gift) and mixing in solid guys like Holt, Theophane, Campbell on the rise. He fights a fun fight with Guerrero back in Jan, albeit he is way past prime, but still good enough to make it fun and he's been sitting. When he comes back, he'll need a soft fight before a bigger fight. He won't be relevant, along with Thurman, Porter, Jacobs and so many others until late 2017.
Then we have to listen to them babble about being paid.
Well in Broner's defensive he always makes extremely exciting fights. The porter fight was a dud, but for the most part i'm on the edge of my seat when he fights. Conor too.
I like watching both of them fight also. Just think it's sad that skills don't always dictate popularity. We live in a world that appreciates A-holes over good people
Agreed. Plus the fact that he's a good dude doesn't help. Just ask andre ward. Unfortunately we live in a world where sh&t heads like Broner become popular by acting like A-holes. Also see conner mcgregor.

1. Lets first start with Quillin vs Jacobs being biggest fight that could be made minus Golovkin. It wasn't.
It was basically one unproven fight vs another fighter trying to reestablish himself after 3 years of embarrassment.
2. Nobody watched it because PBC killed Showtimes subscriber base.
I was going to add more but got bored of typing.

The Quillin-Jacobs numbers were probably affected more by Quillin's actions leading up to the fight rather than Jacobs. Quillin had been WBO champion but gave up his belt and and career high payday when Rocnation won the pid for the Quilin-Korobov fight. Then when Lee stepped in and beat Korobov, Quillin had a chance to get the belt back but blew it by coming in heavy and managed only a draw. Also, Jacobs himself was only the #2 WBA middleweight after Golovkin so the fight was never really a world title fight. I think Jacobs is doing well for someone who has not won a legitimate world title in any weight division, if he beats Golovkin his stardom would likely take off.
Don't matter if he as with Arum, HBO, GBP whoever either you have it or you don't, he is "DECENT" but he is no superstar or anything like that. Jacobs was on his way until Pirog knocked him out and after that people I guess kinda tuned out. That happens in boxing, guys lose and people seem to move on until they work their way back
He is only 29 who's to say he can't reach Stardom...BEAT GGG and he will have all the stardom he wants :dunno:
Some of these guys just don't want the hardwork that comes with being the Superstar I honest think some are TERRIFIED of being in that Position in which the entire boxing world is calling them out wanting to fight
Who cares? I'm sure that for many people believe his skills and power. I think his only misfortune GGG. He just lost against Dmitry Pirog and this is normal. Pirog was a very special boxer.
I'm not going to get into the Haymon thing but if I had anything to do with promoting Jacobs, I would be pushing a "miracle man" narrative NOW. Make a vid for the PBC homepage, drop it in commercials, pitch the story to sports columnists looking for interesting material. PUSH that story because that's the type of stuff people love. Relegating it to the commentary crew during a fight is a failure to promote.
Exactly!!!! I love GGG, but you push this as the man who beat cancer and still came back. Not only did he not come back but he's fighting the boogey man of boxing who knocks everyone out. Unfortunately for GGG, Jacobs stared death in the face and fears no man. How is this not the easiest fight to promote ever. Put Jacobs on every talk show ever. I mean seriously. This shouldn't just be an easy fight to sell, it should be an easy script to sell to Hollywood.
i remember he was on course to be the next big thing before the pirog KO
the time it took to rebuild after that and also beat cancer just killed all of his momentum i guess
