This.
Haye made the right move.
What people have an issue with here, I believe, is that both are professional fighters and represent the sport of boxing. Such antics are not a good look for the sport and rightly so. But, you have to look at the situation also.
They are not in the ring, one has the urge to threaten another with violence for many weeks... Walks upto that person (removing jacket) and then expects shiz not to go down?
Those were street tactics by Chisora and he got played!
Haye did the RIGHT thing.
No we don't! I don't watch Jersey Shore and don't intend to start.
If this fight doesn't get made, Breidis only has himself to blame. Khan has wisened up, developed and improved since that fight and Breidis didn't take advantage of the huge boost he got from beating an undefeated top prospect.
It'd be great to see Khan avenge the loss and I really hope he does, but if this fight doesn't get made, it's Prescott's fault for slacking off.
The problem is, Calzaghe never liked weight training. Even when he moved from SMW to LHW, he just chose to lose less weight rather than actually put on 7lbs of lean muscle. As much as I enjoyed his career and would love to see him return, he really had no interest in trying to break Marciano's 49-0 record or unifying at LHW and/or capturing a title in a 3rd or 4th division. I think he was capable of doing the above, including beating Valuev. He just didn't have the desire.
They make it easier so that the fans can remember it. They rather be like oh yeah that Abraham guy rather than oh yeah that one bald guy that punches hard. Look at Felix Sturm, I think he has a crazy ass name
Yeah, Sturm (Adnan Cacic) should use his real name too. Yeah, I know 'Arthur Abraham' is easier to remember for most people, but I disagree that it's more marketable. I feel an unusual and more exotic name can add mystique and interest. I'm sure there are fewer Avetik Abrahamyans in the world than there are Arthur Abrahams.
I don't think Williams or HBO would want that, but I still don't know why more people aren't considering Anthony Mundine as Taylor's possible replacement. He'd add a third continent to the S6 audience.
I agree, it'd be a pretty good job, but you've got to take good care of your voice especially at his age to keep it fit for that sort of work, so I guess he can't go out partying the night before an event. Furthermore, he has to remain unbiased at ringside. He wouldn't get much work if he was hollering from ringside for one guy to win.
I agree that giving -1 would probably encourage negative fighting so I don't think they should do that in the S6. However, DLT obviously has a point in saying going the distance is usually a more credible way to lose than getting sparked. I think that's more of a general issue though. The pride in going the distance even when beaten quite soundly seems to be lost these days. It seems to me that more and more fighters now seem to be pulling out just for the hell of it.
A fighter/corner should only really pull out if he seems to be in grave danger/is injured. Some fighters now just pull out if they're being outjabbed up to the seventh round against opponents they know they can't KO so they decide there's no reason to continue. Buddy McGirt on more than one occasion has pulled his fighter out for very weak reasons. Imagine if a football team just refused to come out for the 2nd half if they were 4-0 down or if a marathon runner just stepped off the track because the top 3 runners had already crossed the finish line.
I strongly, strongly disagree.
The sheer weight of Valuev's arms will generate more force than anything Haye has.
That being said, you are right, he doesn't have any muscle tone. Neither did Andre the Giant.
Most footage of Andre is from when he was in his late 30s and early 40s and his doctor had told him he wouldn't reach 40. If you watch his A&E Bio, they show footage of him when he was younger and he was a lot more lean and mobile.
Anyway... Yes, I have NO doubts that Haye is physically stronger than Valuev and would be able to lift more than him and beat him in an armwrestle (armwrestles should be a mandatory part of every weigh-in). Valuev should have immense natural power and he should be able to break through other fighters' guards, but unfortunately, at that size, strength isn't always directly proportional. Look at Hong Man Choi in MMA/K-1. He's as big as Valuev and has a much better physique, yet I've seen him land knees to the face on a guy 5'11" 175lbs and was unable to KO him! Look at Nathan Jones:
http://www.gerweck.net/nathanjones.jpg
His physique was just unreal and he looks invincible. He's 7'0" and his posture and movement was a lot better than that of Valuev, yet he lost in the 1st round of his only MMA fight.
A guy 7'0" fighting a guy 6'0" is just not the same as a guy 6'0" fighting a guy 5'0". If that were the case, no heavyweight would survive the first 3 rounds with Valuev!
Haye by KO or comfortable decision!
Yeah, I think his chin is a bit overrated and I think his stamina might be overrated too. He said after the fight that he could've gone several more rounds, but before the fight he'd said that he'd rather get KOd than leave the ring feeling that he had a bit more to give so he sort of contradicted himself. His luck could seriously run out against a badass like Kessler so if the fight goes ahead, it's really gonna be make or break time for Mr. Froch.
Lennox Claudius Lewis. Great style with an awesome jab and power. Was usually in great shape and had a really marketable look. Suffered two brutal losses, both of which would've totally broken most fighters' careers, yet avenged both by KO. Beat several top heavies in their own backyard. Enjoyed a long stint as champ and his prime extended into his late 30s.
Never involved any religious BS in any of his interviews and openly admitted he didn't subscribe to organised religion (how many boxers can you say that about?). Was secure in who he was and never tried to portray the gangsta/tough guy role.
He also accompanied the British Bulldog to the ring at Summerslam '92 long before I became a boxing fan.
My only real criticism is that I feel it would've been cool if he'd given Vitali a rematch and trained for it like mad to end his career on an undisputed high, but I can understand why he didn't. There are always more fights.
I like this guy more and more with each fight, article, clip, pic, etc. Does anyone know where the pic was taken and where the beach he's jogging on in the vid is? Is it all in Germany?
Yeah, please PM me too please if anyone finds a stream. Because it's broadcast from New Zealand, I doubt their networks will be trying to get the stream taken down.
Cheers
I would have loved for her to push for him to commit to his next fight, that was probably a pre-existing condition on the interview.
Yeah, the whole interview seems cautiously designed to keep Floyd smiling.
Go for the knockout next time? he must be expecting another opponent to charge headfirst into the turnbuckle then.
I guess Juergen Braehmer might be the closest to what you're looking for.
I think you should be pleased with the fact that your country's fans and promoters are open-minded enough to support German based foreigners and accept them as their own.
The only thing I have a problem with is how they're made to feel they have to change their names to be more accepted.
Felix Sturm = Adnan Cacic
Abraham = Abrahamyan
Robert Stieglitz = Sergey Shtikhlits
I don't know whether it's the fighters' choice or the promoters', but either way, they shouldn't have to feel the need to change their names.
How bout a "Super 6 replacement Tournament" to replace Taylor? Same round robin format, only it will have to be completed before stage 2...
HAHAHAHA, yeah. They'd have to do it Prizefighter format though.
This would be terrible. Taylor is still better then Miranda and probably Green. Taylor should stay in the tourney. He was knocked out, but so what? He knew that was a possiblity and so did Showtime. It's unfair for showtime to replace him because of that.
Taylor needs to stay in the tourney. I'd be down for a Green Miranda rematch, just not to replace Taylor.
Yeah, JT should stay in. It's pro boxing. The fighters and organisers must've known there was the possibility of having to fight on after getting KOd. Having the winner of Green-Miranda as a replacement would be a waste of time imho as all he would do is fill a gap and not really have a legit chance of winning.
If Taylor actually chooses to withdraw, the winner of Bute-Andrade would be a logical replacement, but I think Bute was already offered the chance and declined. Robert Stieglitz has the WBO title, but I don't think he'd want any part of the S6. He's been KOd by Berrio and Andrade and is probably happy to stay in Germany. The winner of Pavlik-Williams would be a welcome addition, but I'm sure HBO would stop that.
If Taylor does withdraw, how about Anthony Mundine? He has a fight at MW this Wednesday, which he should win pretty easily and I'm sure he'd be willing to move back up to SMW for an opportunity like this. Plus, the inclusion of Mundine would attract the Australian fanbase. I think it's a no-brainer.
yeah, I once knew a fighter named Akram who had to change it to "Mark"
Do you know whether he chose to change it himself or was he advised to do this by others?
I just want to see a native german make some noise.
Heheheh, if every country worried about 'native' fighters, the UK fans would feel they don't currently have any champs and I don't think there's ever been a Native American champion from the US, at least not within the last few years.
remember people, wladimir made haye sign a contract that if haye beated him he should fight his brother and after that fight he should fight one of the klits again. Doesn't sound that the klits are as confident as their fans
They're nowhere near as confident as their fans. When fighters instate rematch clauses, they usually lose: Lewis-Rahman 1, Hamed-Barrera and Tarver-Dawson 1. Yes, the Klits would be Haye's toughest opponents to date, but Haye is also better than anyone they've beaten.
hate thread?
Definitely not. Calzaghe's one of my all time favourites and I went to his Kessler and Hopkins fights. I just feel he could still add to his legacy. I know what he's saying here is probably just tongue in cheek, but it's just frustrating how since he's retired, everyone who's called him out either gets totally ignored or told, 'I'm retired', yet he chooses to entertain the idea of fighting Alex fu(king Reid. Even if he'd responded to UFC's Dan Hardy, it would've made more sense. Why draw more attention to Reid? I wouldn't want that fight to go ahead because it would mean money and attention going to Reid and he'd probably have his corner throw in the towel before sustaining any real damage.
Exactly.
Imagine this: Kessler, Abraham, Froch wins first round.
Kessler takes both titles round two, Taylor looses his second fight too.
Taylor beats Kessler round 3.
No titles in play.
Exactly. Have the organisers thought about that scenario?? Furthermore, most pro boxers nowadays have enough trouble scheduling and showing up for one fight, let alone 3-5 fights. Injuries cause delays all the time. Plus, if one of the fighters, particularly one of the relative novices like Dirrell/Ward gets KOd brutally in the first fight, will his team REALLY want him to immediately face 2 more top 10 SMWs? Have they got a back-up plan for if a fighter pulls out of the competition after his first loss?
Very interesting point of view. I actually think Direll/Ward would quit, as their not even high level competition careers have started. But don't you think they've made some "you have to pay to leave" agreements?
I hope they have, but promoters often find a way out of these things when they really want to.
If anything, I think the title bouts have MORE meaning in the tournament. This is the first time in years we will be treated to a series of title bouts with totally worthy contenders.
Yeah, so let's hope the titles remain in the competition at the final 4 stage.
What if someone loses his first 2 fights and is then mathematically out of the tournament, but then beats one of the champs in his 3rd and final bout? That guy will then exit the tournament with one of the belts.
what happens if green knocks him out too rotfl
greens head will be bigger than a hot air balloon rotfl
Then Calzaghe will go down as no better than Sven Ottke! Four of his top opponents will've been beaten more convincingly than he beat them. Fair enough, if you're comparing how he beat just 1 opponent, you can say, 'styles make fights', but if all 4 of his opponents go on to be beaten more convincingly not long after he faced them, his legacy is tainted. Furthermore, some fighters like to use the excuse, 'he wasn't the same after fighting me and that's why subsequent opponents beat him more convincingly'. That's definitely true in many cases, but Calzaghe can't really make that claim except perhaps with Lacy. His Jones and Kessler wins were impressive and decisive, but they're not the kind of muggings that leave a fighter mentally scarred for future bouts.
