Size disparity aside, Oscar's jab is enough to beat Pac from a tactical standpoint. Pac's chance of knocking out Oscar is pretty much close to none, and his power should have little to no effect. Speed and footwork is the only thing going for him but as I said, DLH's jab will pretty much keep that in check. Barring a Picasso of a perfromance, I don't give Pac much of a chance in this one and would put Oscar as a 4:1 favorite at least.
This thread is a breath of fresh air.
A calm and collected corner is crucial in any fight. It settles the fighter down, gives him the confidence that everything is under control even after a bad round. Joe Goosen is one example I can think of. Clear, precise, collected.
I also love to listen in on the corner and analyze what they're saying then see if the fighter implements the adjustment that was suggested by the corner. It's also interesting to see if the given instructions are actually helping to the fighter.
If Pacman hurts Oscar, all it means is Pac's power is something legendary. Oscar ain't shot at this point of his career even if he got hurt by a Pacquiao punch.
Well there were flashes of brillance in that fight but that's only because Tito just stood there like punching bag waiting to get hit. Against an opponent like that it's easy to look good but you've already acknowledged that in your post.
Calz has such a high level of activity I just see Jones turtling in the ropes and covering up as he always does against volume punching. Calz UD Jones.
But like you said, its easy for Jones to look good against Tito because Tito just stood there... its also easy for Joe to look good flurrying away on manfredo... Against Roy, he isn't gonna be flurrying as much as YOU think... his workrate wont be as high as it is in his usual supermiddleweight defenses... hes 36, hes moving up in weight... and hes fighting one of the best...
obviously an AGED veteran, but nonetheless... one with enough tricks up his sleeve that you don't necessarily wanna go in there and start flailing away on Roy... it might be the last thing you wanna do...
The Manfredo fight was a crock of shit and shouldn't have been stopped that early. In any case, Jones' win over Tito was much much more significant for obvious reasons.
One thing though, this late in a one's career a boxer will fight that only way he knows how. In Calz case that's volume and flurries. He already went up to face Hopkins and it didn't look like the weight affected him one bit. He will do just that on fight night.
I echo what I read in this thread that Jones' ability to pull the trigger is a huge question mark. It's his preference to cover up, weather the storm and wait it out that pretty much convinces me he'll lose on points.
If Jones is sharp enough to make Calz think twice about coming in, then he can go to work. But if a cunning old wolf who has all the tricks in the book in Bhop couldn't make Joe stand still, I don't know if Jones can fare better. In my opinion, weight won't be an issue and Calslappy wins based on activity.
EDIT: 5 Personal favorites.
P4P list are not what makes a great fighter.
great fights makes a great fighter.
Great fighters makes that list at one point or another.
He's "retired" but here's something written while he was active
This is pretty much the position Pretty Boy wanted to be in. To be universally accepted as the #1 pound for pound fighter of the world without even fighting. Yes he's had a stellar career and I don't demean his accomplishments what so ever, but to be truly recognized as the top p4p, he's gotta challenge himself to new heights as often as he can.
Sitting on your wins doesn't cut it and it doesn't guarantee you can't get ktfo in your next fight. He dares compare himself to Robinson and I bet some of you here are even foolish enough to accept it. He's created such a myth of invincibility that he doesn't need to fight for people to accept him as better than anyone he'll face. He's won before even siging a contract.
All he really has to do to sustain his status is to fuel the public's praise by putting on an excellent performance every couple of years and he's back on top for a couple more. Quite franlkly it's marketing ingenuity.

Pac's like a kid compared to DLH . Sorry, but it still looks fucking ridiculous.
There were a few more moments in that fight when he could have folded but he sucked it up and gave as good as he got. He was hurt, exhausted, DEFENSELESS and saw absolutely no way of stopping what was in front of him. Cotto's faced adversity before and showed he had heart. If his body was still able to continue and compete, why wouldn't he? Why do people insist that the only way for a fighter to go out is to get knocked unconcious and risk brain damage?
Manny's not ducking random blood tests.
Check the FACTS again:
Arum wants only 2 random tests before a 30-day cutoff, and another
test immediately postfight.
Roach has no problem with any random testing up to a 5-day cutoff,
plus a test immediately postfight.
Pacquiao is even more amenable...
All he wants is 1 day cutoff, with a test immediately postfight.
Who could fucking call THAT unreasonable?
The Mayweathers WANT testing up to and including fight night itself,
which is bullshit from a TESTING point of view, no matter how you slice
it. What they are really after is to mess with Manny's head. They know
Pac truly believes that "blood drawn = lost strength", and that Pac also
feels just as strongly that it takes a few days for him to recover 100% .
The lawsuit? It should have been filed long before this, the minute
Sr. opened his mouth about doping. At this point it's too late, and
hurts Pac's image --and you can all blame his special adviser for that.
h.
This post makes too much sense for the posters at boxingscene.
And stop whining Digeo, the fight will get done regardless. Mayweather would outright fight a tested/non tested Pacquiao when the pay is this good.
This is Mayweather's camp causing a buzz to promote the fight. May Sr. started it and everyone rolled with it. Shit 2 of my buddies who are very very CASUAL boxing fans are telling me about this whole testing scandal while I don't know much about it. It's causing a stir, the fight gets built up, more PPVs it sells.
Steroids? lol wow, you're all sheep. lol Gimme a break....
Yap Yap Yap. These storylines before the fight are interesting and all but just get the contract signed already (It's OBVIOUS it will be). This whole fight is on, fight is off, fight is on, fight is off, fight is signed protocol before EVERY big fight is getting predictable and old. Just skip the drama so the trash talking can begin!
No. He logged his share of fights for the people and then some. He gave them their money's worth, the fights wanted to see and how they imagined they would be. He delivered and paid his due. Now nearing the end of a stellar career and a long hard journey to the top, he wants to be taken care of when he retires. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
After JMM knocked out a #1 ranked Joel Casamayor, how would you rank the Light weight division?
I got ....
1. Campbell
2. Marquez
3. Pac
4. Juan Diaz
AT Lightweight?
Seems about right...
It's not even worth discussing. Pacquiao got offered $20 mil and turned it down. He didn't want the fight. Mayweather got the same deal and accepted every term including fighting at 154 and using Oscar's choice of gloves, etc. Even if Pacquiao had gotten his terms he'd have found something else that would have killed the deal. He didn't want the fight...that's probably why Oscar didn't budge.
Golden Boy Promotions is a REAL company. It's not just some front to get DLH more money in fights. It does get him more money, but it's a real promotional company. They can't be going into negotiations giving Pacquiao everything he wants in hopes that he won't come up with any other demands. They offered Pacquiao $20 mil and he turned it down. That means he never really wanted the fight...plain and simple.
Do you have a link to the 20 million dollar offer?
I've been signing off for the last 15 minutes so I'm not going to dig this up. I read an article where Oscar said Pacquiao was going to make $20 mil/3 or 4 times his highest payday. I'll find it at some point and send it to your inbox.
That wasn't not a formal offer that Pacquiao. Here is one of many articles discussing a possible GBP offer and Manny's demands.
http://teampilipinas.info/2008/07/pacquiao-offered-10-m-vs-oscar-dela.html
If he was offered 20 million, he would have taken it cuz that's what he wanted.
Yes he was...and he turned it down.
Do you have a link? I have been following this since the fight was proposed and the only thing I read was that Pacquiao was ASKING for 20 million. He was NOT offered that amount. Any purse talks was strictly in terms of percentages no precise dollar figure was guaranteed.
Dan Rafael suggested an amount in his article...
Had Pacquiao, who has won titles in five divisions, accepted the 30-percent split, he could have earned his biggest payday, upwards of $10 million to $15 million. Arum said that is not the way Pacquiao thinks.
Golden Boy never made a 20 million dollar offer. Unless you have a link that confirms that but I highly doubt it.
No. But in my experience, Americanized Pinoys are as different from their Filipino born counterparts as night and day.
Yes they are. Arrogant ****s with superiority complexes. They act like they're a superior breed. Low and behold, they're "borrowing" Pacquiao like the Mexicans borrowed Oscar vs Tito. Their "national pride" has awesome timing and extremely convenient.
See that's just pathetic. Bunch of American-Flips acting like assholes. Uncalled for and completely lacking of class. Complete opposite of the guys they're cheering for.
lol nono. He can't match SRR's activity, no one can. Which means he would have needed to beat mulltiple great fighters in their prime (with rematches if required) in stunning fashion to have any kind of shot. I would think SRL knocking out Pryor at 140 and Hagler at 160 and even with that its hard to say.
There are no great WW in their prime right now. The p4p fighters he'll be facing are out of their designated division. If Pac's a small jr WW and Marquez should be nowhere near above that.
