I think the upper cut that put Reid down at the end of the last round was strong enough to make Reid drop his hands. I don't think it's what made him hit the canvas though. I think he had enough wits about him to realize that the punch left him unprotected, and he took a knee so he didn't get his head taken off.
On one hand you can say that he's got a great chin for having that kind of awareness. On the other hand, he dropped to a knee because he was about to have his head taken off.
How the hell can people be saying Taylor won the fight. If a 26 year old can't dominate a 40 year old guy, he can't win. Even if Taylor/Hopkins happens again, and Taylor gets another gift, he won't be a 10th of the champion that Hopkins has been for the last 10 years.
Hopkins showed he was every bit as fast, at 40, as Taylor is in his prime. In 5 years, people won't even know who Taylor is.
He's overrated.
There's already a poll up HERE
I was going to sticky it but didn't have enough points.
I saw that one, but I didn't want to take the time to add up the different questions to see who thought who won :)
I believe it could have been called 7 rounds to 5 for Hopkins or a 6-6 split. It was close but personally I thought Hopkins stole a round early (which would be disputed) and the 5th round was his as well was 8-12.
That's exactly how I thought it went. I had BH winning an early round with counter-punching. Taylor was more aggressive, but he looked sloppy...kind of the "matador/bull" thing that BH talked about pre-fight.
Watch it through without the commentary, I have noticed when I watch fights with sound especially if it is on HBO I will be a bit more biased. However, when I watch it with audio off I see and notice a lot more.
This was true for me when DLH fought Hopkins, I watched it with sound on and gave DLH quite a few rounds but I watched it numerous times with the sound off and I had Hopkins winning a bit more rounds before the stoppage.
It pisses me off that the HBO crew doesnt call a lot of the shots from a fighter they dont want to win. I know the judges probably cant hear them but it makes it seem more biased that way.
It is mainly lampley who does it and his voice overcasts the rest of the crew. Jones/Merchant/Bernstein would be a golden team.
Does that mean you think Hopkins won?
I think that Taylor/Hopkins showed that the fight is Hopkins' to win or lose. In his prime, Hopkins was in another league than Taylor and he just needs to dig a little deeper, at 40, to expose an over-rated figher.
Taylor had nothing that bothered Hopkins. Hopkins looked as good at the end of the fight as he did at the beginning. What does that say about Taylor?
Taylor is like a slower, less talented, less confident Roy Jones. He's quick, but not like Jones was, talented, but not like Jones was, confident, but not even close to being like Jones was.
Congratulations to Taylor for bringing the same luke warm feeling we have for the heavyweights, to the middleweight division.
Larry is awesome...anyone who thinks otherwise has no respect for their elders. Who gives a shit if he's drunk or disoriented on occasion. It's entertaining and I look forward to it.
HBO broadcasts are unique because they represent 3 entirely different generations (George Foreman is a figure unlike any), and Merchant has been around for decades. You can't replace that, no matter how articulate you are. It will be a sad day when Merchant is no longer on the air.
Lampley is a good fit because he allows for the other two's input. Kellerman's just trying to make a name for himself...he doesn't know when he's mades his point and should SHUT THE FUCK UP. I like him though, but he's no Lampley replacement.
Why do we listen to these guys anyway, if not for entertainment? I, at least, try to score the fight regardless of who they're sometimes blatently biased against a particular fighter. Ever listen to a fight without sound? If not, you should try it.
Merchant rules.
No I agree, but he can do a great job as a pre fight/post fight analyst like Bob Costas.
I didn't care for Costas' comment about "big words", regarding Kellerman and Lampley. He implied that the majority of boxing fans are idiots, and that Kellerman and Lampley are exceptions.
Three words, four syllables..."fuck you Costas".
James Toney got da best chin if u ask me, he gets hit on occasions and still grits it out (even though he rolls wit a lotta punches) i never seen him hurt and dude been fightin for well over a decade.
Good point...him and the Tua-man.
James Toney and Erik Morales. Neither man has really legitimately been down in their career.
I don't think Morales can stand and take shots like McCullough can. Morales had a lot of heart to compensate for a "slightly above average" chin.
Benn V Eubank at Old Trafford
Reid V Calzaghe
Hatton V Phillips
Hatton V Pederson
Hatton V Stewart
Nice...how do the crowds at the Hatton fights compare to Calzaghe's?
I like Litzau. I think he's definitely not a future hall of famer, and the first higher level opponent he fights is probably going to mop the floor with him, but until then, at least he's exciting to watch. I'd be suprised if more than a few fights in his career go the distance...whether it's him getting KO'd or whoever he's fighting.
Mosley lost a lot of confidence since his first loss to Forrest. His strength is also in his speed and he looks like he has slowed down some. He also doesn't move as much as he used to (head movement or leg movement).
I think Floyd would kick his ass.
the question is, did hopkins did enough in rounds 9-12 to win it? im curious how compubox recorded the punches thrown & the punches landed of both fighters. if hopkins should have been the winner, it's not going to be a 116-112, i think it should have been 115-113 or 115-114.
Compubox had Hopkins landing a higher percentage. I can't remember if it had him landing more overall punches, but it was pretty close, if not.
Even At 137lbs, You Dont Think He Would Have A Chance?? Mayweather Has Never Faced Somebody With Morales' Heart...
What about Corralles? He has at least as much heart as Morales does. Mayweather just made him look like an average fighter. The question is, can Mayweather do to Morales what he did to Diego?
I think he's taken too many beatings...he has no defense and he won a lot of hits fights only after taking a lot of shots. He reminds me of JCC at the end of the "prime" of his career (like when he fought kostya tszyu).
He should retire before he has done to him what he did to Joe Mesi.
One person that I think will DESTROY Taylor is Trinidad...
Trinidad aint the greatest against boxers, but I see him DESTROYING Jermain Taylor...
I am not a Trinidad fan but I see that happening...
Please Trinidad come and knock this overrated motherfucker OUT!
I agree!...............
Keep hating on the man. When he beats Hopkins in the rematch I want to know what will be said next. As of right now, Look at my sig!!
Yeah, so...Hopkins showed, at 40, he has more boxing skill and speed then Taylor has in his prime. Taylor won on sheer youth and energy, and when that begins to fade by the time he's 30 or so, he'll be beat by just about any of the younger guys coming up with an amount of talent.
He isn't the next big thing...he's just another good boxer...not great.
Bombardier, because of his regular boxing articles in The New Yorker which were called 'The Sweet Science', Liebling was the gentleman/writer who probably did more to bring that phrase to the forefront than any other person in boxing history. But as far as what I've read in the past, Liebling first read that phrase while reading Pierce Egan's old volumes of 'Boxiana' from the early 1800's which often featured the "sweet science of bruising" phrase.
Nice, thanks for the info guys.
u thick mofo im askin u peeps wot i can say 2 people hu say it shud be banned I ENJOY BOXING i need sum facts to confront em wiv
ok, so I have no idea what language that is, but if I understand what you said, then maybe the original question should have been "Why should boxing not be banned?"
Asking this question in a boxing forum is like going out to an anti-abortion site and asking if abortion should be legalized. Who the hell is going to subscribe to a boxing forum that thinks it should be banned?
Tarver has boxing skills but I think he'd run out of gas in later rounds against Lacy, and start getting hit. He was dead tired in the last few rounds againt RJ. Lacy has a good chin and I don't think Tarver is active enough to put together a series of punches that could hurt Lacy.
Lacy by TKO in the mid to late rounds.
I notice augustus stopped throwing head shots too. I hope Olivera is OK. I read a short article that said he was taken to a hospital for some tests and then released.
