Lol..
I'll be watching cuz I actually like Kovalev. and without Ward around he's the best at LHW.
but all that boogeyman talk is over with. Ward took that man's aura of fear away. he's just a fighter now. not a monster.
I remember all those posters predicting Ward would never take the fight and he could get killed literally if he does... good times.
I never stated Andre Ward could get killed but I am one of those that thought as well as posted that Sergey Kovalev would beat Andre decisively in the 2nd fight and also posted that Andre probably wouldn't give Sergey a rematch after the 1st fight.
I was wrong and Andre Ward fought a great fight; I admit it.
I'm looking forward to the fight this Saturday and want to see if Kovalev is still improving under his new trainer. I'm also looking forward to listening to Andre Ward commentary and analysis starting in mid August and its too bad he's not starting early so he could commentate on the Kovalev fight tomorrow night.
No sht, ward isn't a cruiserweight.
What's up with these eastern euro's cherrypicking smaller guys tho?
I think Andre Ward walks around close to 200 and carries the weight well.
Khan looked terrible. Footwork was clumsy and he wasn't in shape.
Virgil should've taken the full five and then stopped it but he did the right thing in saving amir from a worse beating.
Lol at you clowns saying he lost to Cotto. Of course he did, he was a cripple at that point. I think the OP is bringing up when Sergio was in his prime and calling for a fight at 154 with Floyd years ago. That call obviously went unanswered
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRZndeW3OgQ
Kovalev was faking low blows during the fight from shots that landed on the navel. That's a fact. The guy wanted out. He already admitted defeat in that fight. DEAL WITH IT.
Then why didn't Sergey just go down from the right hand if he wanted out so badly?
That fight was a real good one and Sergey took a terrible beating to the body and although a blow or two coulda been low or borderline, he lost fair and square.
I was wrong about Andre Ward, I didn't think he would be able to compete at the heavier weight against a fighter of Sergey Kovalev caliber. Great fight by Andre Ward.
They fought three times- first fight was a draw and the second was a majority decision for James Toney but Mike McCallum actually won both those fights.
The third fight was at cruiserweight and Mike McCallum lost by UD.
Nice points the first thing he did when ref jumped in was to look to sky.Watch it that is not a man who wanted to keep fightin.
I think its clear that Sergey was done, he got beat up pretty badly but getting beaten up and not disputing the stoppage doesn't equate to the guy quitting.
More belts, better resume. Not really going in to detail because it’s obvious.
Sergi own trainer said he quit. But if we want to get technical, the ref said it was a clean punch and so did the Nevada commission. Clean punch..... KO
Sergey Kovalev own trainer also called Andre Ward camp before 2nd fight and gave Virgil Hunter lots of information on Sergey and looked for a chance to jump ship; so whatever JDJ has to say we'll take with a grain of salt.
Sergey got beat up to the body by Andre Ward and he lost the fight. Its obvious Sergey was really troubled by the body shots and couldn't take them but I didn't see him quit.
If Sergey had been intent on quitting then he could've just went down right after Andre Ward landed the big right hand but he didn't do that, he tried to get away and hold on, looking to survive the round.
The fact that the right hurt sergi shows he was mentally checked out. Ward has very limited power. I’m sure if he was a good actor he would have pretended to go down from that punch. But that would be expecting to much. Hell, he couldn’t even act like he was mad the fight was stopped until a week later.
"The fact that the right hurt Sergi shows he was mentally checked out" makes absolutely no sense at all.
The right hurt Seregy because it was a damn good punch with a lot behind it.
Good fight
This was an excellent fight. First half except 2nd round was all Lopez and then Loma had big comeback in second half of fight but had a tough 12th round. Even when getting hit at end was still going forward trying to win.
Judges cards being crazy notwithstanding Lopez deserved the win. I was rooting for Loma but he didn’t win. Started slow and looked rusty or that may have been Lopez just really doing well from big long or combination of both.
It’s good we were two fighters that took a chance and fought someone the unsafe fight.
Hagler was an underrated boxer and in regard to chin, had one of the best the middleweight division has ever seen. The only time he was off his feet was a fluke flash knockdown by Juan Roldan.
Lots of folks always refer to his last three fights; Hearns, Mugabi and Leonard. What a lot of those folks don’t realize is that all three of those fights came past his prime. The fight with Hearns was incredible and Marvin was able to withstand what Hearns threw at him so he’d be able to withstand whatever Canelo has. Marvin was 34-35 for that fight and took lot of punishment and his next fight was against John Mugabi and John was a destroyer. 26-0 with all KO wins. By this time Hagler had slowed down and it was a toe to toe slugfest for 11 rounds with Marvin winning the fight by TKO. Tht was two straight slugfest that Ray decided to come back and fight Marvin. By the time they got in the ring Ray was 30 and Marvin was 37. Due to finally getting the huge payday Marvin people ceded to Ray demands and was first championship fight at 12 rounds in stead of 15, biggest ring, bigger gloves, loosened ropes so Ray could lean back, Ray trained for a year straight for this fight, it’s interesting to hear Ray talk about all the things that went into that fight. Ray also talks about how he waited till he saw how far Hagler had slipped when watching the Mugabi fight that he finally decided to fight him. Nonetheless, it was a close fight. Ray won a split decision with a good deal of people thinking that Marvin should’ve won. This was a way past his prime Hagler too.
Those are the fights so many look at and bring up when talking about Marvin and they fail to bring up the years and years where he crushed opponents before he got his shot and how he was avoided for so long or how he got robbed when he beat up Autofermo with that “draw” decision first time he fought for the belt or how he devoured Alan Minter to take the title the second chance he got. They fail to bring up the classic against a revitalized Duran where the fight was close after 10 and Hagler knowing this turned it way up and left no doubt over the last five rounds to solidify that victory. People forget of how he outboxed and crushed Mustangs Hamsho twice and the others during his dominating championship reign.
Marvin didn’t catch one break and if given the chance to fight a “groomed” fighter like Canelo Alvarez, Marvin wouldn’t let that go. Marvin would’ve been salivating and would’ve smothered Canelo and Canelo wouldn’t have been able to hang with Marvin Hagler.
Not an insult to Canelo but if we’re talking g about a 28-30 year old Marvin Hagler in his prime fighting Canelo in his prime then it’s a terrible matchup for Canelo.
Hopkins respects power. An older Hopkins is still prime because he began boxing in hes late 20s.He lost hes first fight, was losing to Allen the first time he fought him and dived out the ring.I think hes prime probably was Trinidad, according to him it was.He said hed never boxed with such a high guard.Yes,he went in the run vs Eastman. He ain't walking into Golovkin .He may have won that Eastman fight ,but he ran.You asked when he ran.He did it in that fight .
Trinidad at his natural fighting weight of WW is where he should’ve stayed but alas, the money fights are where it’s at.
Trip G vs. BHop is an interesting fight and one I think that Trip G wins.
well if you class canelo as an actual 155lber before .....it seemed to me he was a middleweight who use to drastically cut weight to make weight and then rehydrate back up another 20lb...Canelo has been a middleweight for quite some time really
Canelo has to walk around at at least 175-180 if not a little more. Big kid that has the slimming down and rehydrating for the fight down to a science. There’s a bit of maturity and education Canelo and his people gleaned from the Floyd fight when he was 23 and had to fight at 152 pound catch weight. One of those things was dictating the terms before getting in the ring while one of the others is how to make weight and pack it back on for the size advantage. I think Canelo was always a middleweight if not bigger.
Conor McGregor in his pro boxing debut against The Best boxer of this generation, did much better than anyone expected him to. Granted Floyd is 40 but he is still Floyd.
Conor has nothing to be ashamed of, he gave Floyd a better fight than Manny Paquia or Canelo Alvarez did.
I think the problem Floyd encountered early was Conor understanding range and distance so well and I think the problem Conor ran in to, is that he didn't count on Floyd hitting him as hard as he did. I found it odd that some folks seemed to think before this fight that Conor was the harder puncher.
Conor won 3-4 rounds in his pro boxing debut against Floyd Mayweather and he lasted 9 1/2 rounds; thats a success for him right there.
Floyd just beat a guy who brought every damn dirty trick out in the book..and this thread said he was not built for that..thats why it was bummmmmmmped
You meant to write that Floyd finally fought someone that didn't allow him to get away with his chronic rulebreaking. Chino took him to task for his nonsense and if the ref didn't "adapt" to help Floyd out and let them fight instead of breaking them when Floyd was holding, Floyd would've lost 10 rounds last night.
Sugar Ray Leonard was also a spoiled brat like Floyd "Money" Mayweather but Ray never cried so consistently to the referee like Floyd did last night.
Chino really exposed Floyds cowardice last night.
Good call on the bump. I have to say a prime Duran would have beat Floyd's ass last night. It was cool to see Floyd's warrior side though
Both of them at lightweight in their primes isn't even a qeustion, Roberto Duran crushes Floyd Mayweather. At 147, Floyd has way more of a chance but Floyd wouldn't have been able to beat the Roberto from Duran/Leonard 1, Roberto Duran that night was a thing of beauty. He was brutal animalistic efficiency and hatred. He took Ray apart. Unfrotunately, we never saw that Roberto Duran at that weight class ever again.
He didn't route Duran easily. That was a competitive, close fight when Duran quit.
After the first fight, Leonard stated he was going to retire then when Duran balooned up to almost 200 pounds Ray demanded the rematch and that it be very quick. Unfortunately the people handling Roberto were idiots and allowed that and Duran was actually taking ex lax the day of the weigh in tryign to make the weight. Duran didn't have a training camp for the 2nd fight, he basically went to fat camp. Leonard admited on the 30/30 that this was his plan. Ray also admitted on the 30/30 that he purposefully played with Durans head and made him wait 9-10 years for the rubber match, at which point Duran was a mere shell of who he was.
Ray also made Tommy Hearns wait for a rematch and he refused to give one to Marvelous Marvin Hagler after their fight in Las Vegas. Years later when Marvelous Marvin was remarried and making movies in his new home country of Italy, Ray threw it out there that maybe he would consider fighting Hagler again to which Hagler just didn't biother listening because he had been retired for years and wasn't going to play Sugars game. I think Marvelous' Marvin's response was that if "Ray wants to fight now he and I can go somewhere quiet away from everyone and I'll tear his head off." Ray had no response.
Sugar Ray Leonard showed so much heart in the 1st Duran fight and in the come from behind knockout of Thomas Hearns in the 14th round of their first fight. He was a truly great fighter but his out the ring manipulations and refusals to grant rematchs against tough foes he won fights against somewhat taints his legacy. He and Floyd had one thing in common is that they both throws tantrums and become spoiled brats unless they get their way in all aspects of negotiations.
Leonard/Duran 1 was a close fight but not as close as some say it was. Ray was given some rounds on the judges cards he shouldn't have gotten. Duran clearly won 9-10 rounds in that fight.
To you he's "slick." Ok. I'm guessing you yourself are nothing of the sort. A bit like a fat chick who sees a slightly less fat chick and considers her skinny.
Bradley is a physically gifted caveman as far as I'm concerned.
Don't underestimate the value of being a physically gifted caveman. One of the greatest heavyweights of all time, Jack Dempsey was an extremley physically gifted caveman.
After the way he knocked Manny out, there is no reason for JMM to fight him again. He is not going to top that KO no matter what he does if they fought again. I think after JMM beats Alvarado that he will wnat to fight Bradley again and I'm not sure how that fight would go. In the first fight it was apparent that Bradley's fight plan and style were very difficult for JMM although I thought the fight was much closer than some people claim.
Bradley's biggest problem is he has too much heart. When he get's tagged his natural instinct is to get reckless and trade. This almost cost him in the Ruslan fight but Ruslan didn't have the experience to capitalize on Bradley's mistakes.
Pac made Tim pay last night and showed (2nd time) again that the two are in two different leagues when it comes to who is the better fighter.
Timothy Bradley neeeds to curtailt hat recklessness because if he gets in to a few more wars like he did against Ruslan Provodnikov, he will be slurring his speech for the rest of his life. He seems like a good guy and i wouldn't want to see that happen to him.
This ass hole goes on the air and says when I was the B-Side to Mayweather and Pacquiao, I had to follow their demands. While that was true for the most part, both Mayweather and Pacquiao embraced their roles as challengers to Cotto's belt and entered the ring first. Now he's doing this **** to Martinez. SMDH
I noticed that in the preview of the faceoff too.
I hope Sergio Martinez KOs Miguel Cotto in the early rounds.
It did kind of feel like he was just happy he got the pay day during the post fight. OR, he was glad that the right guy won this time, so he can get that robbery off his back.
I bet a huge weight is lifted off his back now.
I think there is a big relief on Timothy Bradley for all the pressure to be off. Now there is no hate and death threats, etc.......etc........ in regard to the first fight. It's not his fault the judges from the first fight are idiots, Timothy didn't write the scorecards.
If Timothy Bradley goes out there after the first fight and says "yeah the judges robbed Manny and gave me the decision" or words to that effect he basically screws himself out of millions of dollars in the rematch. Also a fighters view and perception of the fight they're actually in is much different than the view and perception of other people watching it.
I thought he lost the first fight but I also think Timothy Bradley gave a good showing of himself in the first fight against Manny Pacquiao. I think he also gave a good showing last night although I didn't think this fight was as close as the first one.
Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that Timothy Bradley doesn't have his father as his strength and conditioning coach anymore and is now going with someone that places more emphasis on developing explosive speed as oppossed to lifting heavy. His fast twitch muscles are probably more optimal now and he is 30 years old, just coming in to great strength gains during that period of life.
Unfortunately for Timothy, Manny Pacquiao was able to hurt him more profoundly and bring him back to reality.
His behavior after the fight helped, but I lost respect. He talked all that insecure garbage leading up to the fight, and then had a meltdown in the ring.
I think the pre fight talk was just to pump himself up because he may have had some doubts after that first fight.
I like Timothy Bradley, its not his fault the judges gifted him the first fight. The guy comes to fight and he is an overall good person, you have to respect that.
Nobody told Cotto he was fighting the hulk did they?
http://www.boxingscene.com/uploads/77642/sergio%20martinez.jpg
Sergio hasn't sparred much since he's been with Sargiomento as his trainer.
I didn't see this one coming. I picked Sergio Martinez to beat up Miguel Cotto. I'll eat crow.
Congratulations to MigueL Cotto for fighting a great fight.
The bigger draw as oppossed to the lesser draw isn't the issue here.
Sergio Martinez is pissed because he is The MiddleWeight Champion of The World and he shouldn't have to play B side to the contender regardless of the draw.
It is going to be brilliantly entertaining to watch Sergio Martinez beat the brakes off Miguel Cotto. Sergio is going to retire Miguel.
