seperate from what your comment was
There's definitely potential there. Got caught with a couple counters when he had hia guy on the ropes, but he's a patient fighter yet still throws a ton of punches. His body work was impressive. Interested to see what his stamina is like if he throws that many punches in fights against real opposition
A big thanks for giving a quick rundown on the fights so far. Mu h appreciated
involving a Showtime fighter?
How could Steve Weisfeld's conflict of interest not have been OBVIOUS to the Ohio commission? And he unsurprisingly turns in a scorecard with the widest margin (7-3) for the Showtime fighter?
Boxing doesnt even try to hide its corruption / incompetence anymore. And people wonder why its a fringe sport......
Steve Farhood is not Steve Weisfeld.
Amir Khan, with his gifts being what they are, only fights in one way; Floyd can fight in more than a handful of ways. You add that Floyd also happens to be the longer fighter, and things end badly for Khan.
Khan comes out fast for the first two rounds, Floyd figures the patterns out by round four, and Khan gets routed for the rest of the fight (likely getting walked onto something late).
Yes, but that's ignoring the fact that the HBO spin machine is invested in Golovkin
If he loses to Jacobs people will say the only time he fought a competent world class Middleweight he lost
All his 20+ defences wouldnt mean a damn thing, its not how many you beat its about when you step up do you actually deliver.
I feel unlike a lot of fighters who lose if GGG loses now, it will really really stain his career and wouldnt even be considered for the HOF.
He could be known as the guy who fooled the public for as long as he possibly could
If Jacobs boxes the **** out of Golovkin and stops him early, air gets let out of the balloon for a bit, with eyes going to now look back on the record.
Went to war with a faded Kassim Ouma, had a good scrap with Gabriel Rosado debuting at 160lbs, going 11 rounds with durable "almost man" Matthew Macklin, Kell Brook being his best opponent even though he was coming up to weight classes, etc.
The amount of hype that went into building Golovkin up would be made flatly clear, with the reactions to that being what they are.
If Jacobs and Golovkin end up having a back-and-forth 12 round war, where Jacobs closes strong down the stretch for an 8-4 or 7-5 win (or a stoppage in the championship rounds of the fight), Golovkin's legacy moves on without too much damage (Golovkin would've shown that his skills were top world-level, though not at that pinacle)
Why would Lamont Peterson even make such an agreement?
Assuming he wins his fight this week, he instantly becomes mandatory challenger to the title unification fight between Thurman and Garcia (with the timing of the situation likely meaning that the fight would happen come June/July).
Even assuming that he gets beat, that'd be a 90-95 day turnaround between fights for Peterson (1-2 weeks off, another hard 8-week camp, travel to adjust for the time zone difference, and then a hard weight cut to the fight).
And that's assuming that nothing happens to Peterson, physically, in his coming fight (33 years of age, and 16 months off between fights, opens up the chance for some silliness to happen), let alone any talk of how the money would be split up.
He'd never be granted a license to fight in Nevada ever again, and I doubt that NY would want to have McGregor fight there either.
McGregor's notoriety may go to whatever level in a return to MMA, but he would've ****ed up the money, for himself and the UFC.
that's not how any of this works, lol
F*ck Browne but will The Duck find a way to duck Browned too? Just like he's ducked everyone else. Both with Haymon and Showtime, right? Stevenson will find a way to duck somehow. :lol1:
Should be an easy fight for Stevenson as well, no?
Adonis Stevenson is the WBC's light heavyweight champion, fighting out of a home base that is built to draw money, full stop.
He'll stay as active as he wants to be, and he'll fight the mandatory challenger whenever the WBC names one, but there's no other real leverage against the guy.
Is Marcus Browne mandatory? No. Does Marcus Browne have the type of profile to draw extra money to the table? Maybe (American Olympian, fighting out of one of the hotter boxing markets, backing of TV in his camp, etc). Is Marcus Browne in any position to dictate any type of terms for the fight? No.
With the big win, Marcus Browne's name is now firmly in the mix, but he's not heading any lists just yet.
lmao when will you phags give up that fantasy?
Tyson got his license suspended for biting someone's ear off.
Floyd "Money" Mayweather is a ****ing institution in Las Vegas, fighting his last 14 fights and giving his prime decade in the sport to the city.
Floyd's been able to generate $200m in ticket sales, likely another $100m in closed circuit revenues, untold amounts of money at the sportsbook for Las Vegas, and countless amounts of money poured into the Las Vegas economy (from the cabbies and bellhops, to the strippers and waitresses).
If you honestly think Las Vegas isn't going to go to the mattresses for Floyd, you're living in a ****ing fantasy.
If they don't bid enough and the fight goes to SHO Wlad still owes HBO a fight. IMO HBO is in a great position because they will either get Wlad's "comeback finale" should he lose or get his first fight after he wins..
If Wlad gets flattened in 6 rounds (nothing in Klitschko's history has shown that he reacts all that well when he gets landed on), would anyone really care to see Klitschko's farewell? You add that a large chunk of his run was had off of US TV, and the residual value of Klitschko is a touch overstated.
It's sad to see that you still don't get it
Get's Khan to string Eddie all along that he wants to fight, so Kell has no choice but to fight Spence!
Khan did the same thing last year, and got a Fat paycheck (of which Al received a nice part) when he fought Canelo out of the blue.
Al Haymon is always 2 steps ahead!
Haymon's sole aim is to act in the interest of the fighter that he represents.
Amir Khan doesn't want to fight Kell Brook, and Al Haymon isn't going to compel Khan to take a fight that he doesn't actually want.
Khan seems to finally understand that his options for any marketable fights have basically come down to a Brook fight, and he's doing his dance
Yea a lot of business people, not just boxers, setup a company to lessen taxes & for other reasons that benefit them. I'd suspect McGregor is already smart enough to be doing that cuz taxes are a mfer when you are in that highest tax bracket in a career that could end on any given night & your pay can drastically change on a fight by fight basis, but idk all the particulars about Ireland either with this sorta thing so who knows.
I'm sure McGregor Promotions isn't much of anything at the moment. They probably don't even got a phone number outside of the touch butt guys' cell phone. They definitely don't got a website or FB page even, cuz I just checked, which are among the first things a business should be doing these days so that says everything to me. Apparently he has applied for a trademark for McGregor Promotions last month doe.
The Irish tax system is a touch different, though, one would think
You know the way Conor has set up this McGregor promotions, has he really set it up?
Because isn't their something that with it being a promotion company, the money gets paid into the company, so technically McGregor himself is not getting paid,it's the company, isn't that why boxers set these company's up? Less tax and all that ****.?
So wouldn't that get him out of his contract as he technically wouldn't be getting paid,or can't be sued either, it will have to be the ufc suing McGregor promotions wouldn't it?
Which I'm sure 2 "boxing promotions" holding a boxing fight isn't illegal?
If that makes any sense haha
Yes, fighters/people generally set up LLCs/promotional companies to offset their tax obligations (LLCs are taxed at, I believe, 25% federally, with expenses by the company, ie camp expenses, allowed to offset the revenues going into the LLC, lowering the tax burden).
Looks like Showtime will be getting the Klitschko-Joshua fight.
That will mean that HBO Boxing would likely only show 2-3 boxing events for the first 5 months.
The ratings for HBO boxing events continue to sink with most events generating less than a million viewers.
What will happen when Peter Nelson's boss at HBO sees that they didn't spend much on boxing at all but suffered no loss of subscriptions? That means that the vast majority their current subscriber base dislikes boxing altogether.
It seems like the logical decision would be to cut boxing programming from HBO and spend it on something else altogether.
"dislike of boxing" has nothing to do with it; the HBO audience base is basically signed up to HBO to watch GoT, Ballers, Veep, Girls, and the hosts of other original programs and first-run movies that HBO airs.
HBO has been spending less and less money on boxing over the years, but there's a real likelihood (in the near future) that HBO will decide to take whatever money they have budgeted for boxing, take that entire money and invest it in producing another original series for the channel, and then run the boxing franchise solely off of any money that they can generate off off PPV.
Alvarez can deliver three PPV fights, and then you hope against hope that Golovkin, Crawford, Lomachenko, or someone else can break through for PPV; on Alvarez's fights alone, HBO is likely looking at $6m (an amount that should be able to finance 2-3 solid shows).
7 PPVs, with another 5-6 regular broadcasts, will likely become the new HBO standard.
If you're on premium cable for boxing, pick up Showtime
It is no secret that Al Haymon violates the Muhammad Ali Act being that he represents both the managerial side as well as the promotional side of a fight card promotion.
However, no judge or jury would ever prosecute him because his fighters get paid better than any of their peers in the industry. For those that aren't aware... the Ali Act was formed to stop situations like promoter Don King and his son Carl King would manage the fighters finding ways to cheat the fighters out of rightful purses.
The reality is that Haymon is acting similar to King technically but is providing the OPPOSITE in terms of compensation. No reasonably intelligent judge or jury would EVER convict Haymon of violating the Ali Act based on this simple premise... his fighters get paid well.
Class is dismissed.
Point to a single example of Haymon's name on rental agreement, commission form, or any actual aspect of being a promoter, or shut the **** up.
Haymon has changed the model; one common pool of talent, the fighters and their camps agreeing to fights, and the agreed fight than going to the promoter that is best believed to deliver for the fighters in the fight.
With Pedro Diaz:
Beat Antonio Margarito
Lost to Floyd Mayweather
Lost to Austin Trout
With Freddie Roach:
Beat Delvin Rodriguez
Beat Sergio Martinez
Beat Daniel Geale
Lost to Canelo Alvarez
I thought Cotto showed some of the smartest boxing of his career under Diaz. Admittedly Margarito was shot but the simple adjustments he made turned that into a relatively easy for him. I thought the gameplan were absolutely superb against Floyd, he just didn't have the gas tank to see it out to the finish line. The Trout fight was a disaster but stylistically that was a difficult fight for him.
I was pissed when he dropped Diaz, but under Roach his offensive game seemed to move to a new level. He looked more impressive offensively than he had for a long time, and he scored three stoppages in succession when most thought his power had topped out at 147.
Thoughts?
Pedro Diaz actively worked to max out on Cotto's boxing brain, with the results being what they were; Freddie Roach actively focused on maxing out on the things that Cotto had already shown that he does well, with the results being what they were.
This is a serious question. I know I am known as an ODH hater and make many jokes about him.
This is now the third time ODH has had a relapse/incident right before a big card he is promoting.
Instead of being able to answer questions and promote the brand, ODH is going to need serious time off to get help with his addiction.
Do you think ESPN will cancel or alter the recently signed deal with GBP in light of this situation?
The ESPN2 deal has been consummated, and I don't think that that'll change; fairly certain, however, that the likelihood that ESPN will carry on with Golden Boy after the time buy situation has been greatly diminished by Oscar's actions.
Be ready to see Eric Gomez taking on more of the public responsibilities (and see Oscar hoping beyond hope that Gomez is able to effectively fill that role as the go-between between the decisionmakers and Oscar De La Hoya ).
No way UFC goes to HBO... zero chance.
Less than zero infact.
How so?
UFC is still, even with the Fox deal, a PPV-driven company, and HBO does a great job at marketing PPV. Beyond that, with the result of the current Fox deal being what it's become (can anyone point to any Fox to PPV attractions?), WME would now have another way to better monetize their non-PPV showdowns.
HBO is looking for content that will motivate people (not already subscribing for the shows) to pay the premium to pick up HBO.
If given the option of watching the UFC on HBO, or not watching any UFC beyond PPV, there's a audience there that will make the switch, simply to watch UFC.
You keep bringing up Gary Shaw...how many shows is he even doing these days?
No idea, tbh. But Gary Shaw does have Bryant Jennings and other fighters under his banner, and Shaw has no other outlets, currently to push his fighters out on.
Shaw and Roc Nation, from what I remember, had a deal to merge companies (that fell apart over Shaw wanting to be the lead party for the boxing business); if RNS would get the deal, I doubt that both parties would be opposed to re-entering talks again.
RNS gets access to more talent for their dates, while Gary Shaw actually gets the chance to put his fighters on TV.
It's a spectacle; get over it
Poll added, I'd really like to know how people feel about this one.
For me this is 10 times worse than the Berto fight, Berto would likely do an absolute number on someone like Conor McGregor and If this fight happens Conor McGregor will very likely get KOed by Floyd who has had a long lay off, not KOed anyone in many years and is now in his 40's as well?
It's a clown show, If you supported a boycott against Berto Vs. Floyd you should hold this one to a higher disdain.
If yes, explain why.
Floyd Mayweather Jr is boxing biggest star, and Conor McGregor is MMA's biggest star.
You put two massive stars together, and you inherently draw massive business, regardless of what the actual fight looks like.
Think 'The Expendables'; regardless of what the actual movie was about, you had basically every action star of the prior 30 years in a single movie, and you end up with a movie blockbuster that spawns a series that generate $800m over three films.
They've used those venues for smaller cards.
However, you're just conveniently leaving off other venues they've had fights at...MSG, AT&T, T-Mobile, Stubhub Center, Turning Stone, etc.
What's the etc, though? Just like you, I've got access to BoxRec; you remove the shows at Bellasco and Fantasy Resorts, and you've basically got the 5 shows that you've listed and not much of anything else.
That's two likely's in one sentence...with nothing solid about what Schaefer actually has around him at Ringstar right now.
Schaefer left Golden Boy with the financial backers coming with him. Whether those folks have chosen to stick with Schaefer or say "to hell with boxing" is unknown to me, which is why I used likely. Try and argue that point if you want.
Schaefer left the way he left, yet was widely accepted when he returned to the boxing world.
If you have an employee roster that you'd like to share, share it.
Depends how the deal happens
If the UFC plays along, you'd likely end up with a mixed fight card, featuring boxing matches (largely featuring Mayweather Promotions fighters) and UFC matches in the same ring (think PrideFC).
If the UFC doesn't want to do business, Floyd and McGregor put on their show, and the entire card features solely boxing matches.
If somehow the Eubanks negotiate a better deal with GGG and get more money than what they were offered from Eddie Hearn, what does it say about Hearn?
Edit
The source is Chris Eubank and his team in an IFL interview.
https://s24.postimg.org/d34asdy2d/eubank.pngfree screen capture
There's almost no way that ITV delivers the type of money to the pot that Eddie Hearn and Sky Sports are able to deliver for a proper PPV, regardless of what the Eubanks want to posture.
None of the rumors have ever been confirmed (or will ever be confirmed, tbh), but Gennady Golovkin apparently walked away with $4m for his fight with Kell Brook.
The initial estimates will likely take a bit of time to determine (say 2 weeks, lol), but did the entire event even clear $4m?
Weren't those investors also involved with trying to buy Oscar out his own company? Not sure about you but if some minority owners try to buy me out my own shyt and I clean house with the rat who orchestrated it why would Oscar want those guys around. You do know Oscar is worth hundreds of millions him buying out minority owners to gain peace of mind and more control of his company isn't a negative. Just like a ton of employees who were loyal to Schaefer were given pink slips and fired after schaefer was forced out. But did those investors invest in Schaefer after they left? I haven't heard anything to suggest they did.
I'm not sure, and earnestly wouldn't know where to look; my sense was always that the W&R money and/or the investor money was part of the buyout deal (Schaefer formally takes over the running of Golden Boy Promotions, with Haymon working out the logistics for TV).
Golden Boy Promotions has been in operation for over a decade before Oscar even decided to worry about how his company was running.
Oscar can have hundreds of millions of dollars (according to the internet guess, Oscar's current net worth is $200m), but the fact still remains that he's still a 95% owner of a multi-million dollar company that's basically down to a single marketable fighter.
If Haymon/Schaefer were apparently willing to lay out $100m to buy Golden Boy (after most of the marketable fighters were already contracted to Haymon), it'd be interesting to try and figure out how much of De La Hoya's own wealth he has tied in with Golden Boy now.
Schaefer is signing fighters in the US, he's partnered with David Haye in the UK (with eyes towards some kind of TV deal), and has his eyes towards working out a deal in France/Europe. Schaefer is making moves as if he's got money in the pocket
How many events has Roc Nation done in their history and how many shows has GBP done during that same time span?
Roc Nation has been a part of more big events, while Golden Boy has put on more shows (with nearly all of those shows being put on in 300-400 seat venues).
Do you really want to count the Bellasco Theater shows (with cards full of mismatches)
I don't think Khan beats Brook, Pacquiao, Thurman, or Spence. The fact is, he's just not that good.
.... over a full 12-round professional fight. At this point, Amir Khan has been in boxing and is well-schooled enough to never lose a 4-round fight in his life; his mental focus simply falls to **** after that point.
Looking at BoxRec's welterweight rankings, I honestly don't think Amir Khan beats any of the fighters in their top 8 in a 12-round fight (have never seen Jeff Horn fight, and I still question Vargas' power, but he may have issues with them too).
Khan knows that he can rattle off the six punch combination, and he loses his mind behind that, and that's not going to change. Khan gets timed, doesn't have much of a Plan B when the handspeed doesn't work, and he's trying to find his way to the final bell from about the third round on.
It's a shame that Khan didn't end with Virgil Hunter right when he got knocked out by Breidis Prescott; the timing may not have been great (Andre Ward heading into the Super Six would've had Hunter's full focus), but Hunter is trying to teach the tactics that would've helped max out Khan's style, fighting like heck against the muscle memory built in by Freddie Roach and his camp in the UK.
Or waiting on the sidelines secretly for cotto.
^^^wwcd
Khan doesn't beat Brook or Garcia (or a host of the other top challengers, tbh), but he's seemingly making the calculus that, were he to lose to Garcia, he could still head to the UK to fight Brook for a big payday.
You giving Schaefer credit for things that have nothing to do with him lol. You listing Haymon credentials. Those are fighters and deals Haymon has. And if ESPN wanted a deal with Schaefer to get access to Haymon fighters what sense does that make, they would just go straight to Haymon and PBC they don't need jack from Schaefer. Haymon don't even need Schaefer which is why the 2 biggest fights on PBC's calendar have nothing to do with Schaefer. Garcia signed with Haymon he has no contract with schaefer his previous fight had nothing to do with Schaefer promotion company and his next fight might have nothing to do with it either. You sound like Floyd fans that were claiming Mayweather Promotions as a done deal for Mikey's next contract and we a year later and he's got no contract and fights for whatever promoter Haymon tells him too.
And if Golden Boy's LA Fight Club isn't doing good then why did ESPN just sign a contract to basically air LA Fight Club? You make no sense, LA Fight Club isn't doing better then the invisible series Schaefer has with fighters that have nothing to do with his company? SMH If Schaefer had the pieces in place he would of got the ESPN deal but doesn't.
Haymon isn't looking to simply take the place of Friday Night Fights; his push has been for a bigger image, with this coming summer series on ESPN likely the scope for what Haymon seems to be looking for. If ESPN isn't interested in that, Haymon moves PBC elsewhere (but still keeps the in with ESPN2 to have the option available for his talent).
Mikey Garcia has mainlined a deal, seemingly, with Showtime; with Mikey still hopping on whatever big opportunity that gets booked, his promotional allegiance doesn't really matter at this point. Mikey wins a 135lb title, and starts to try and rebuild his own profile as a feature draw, and then he's promotional affiliation would become more crucial.
ESPN didn't "sign a contract to basically air LA Fight Club"; ESPN2 has a time-buy agreement, paid for by Tecate, to air Golden Boy on ESPN Deportes and ESPN2.
Schaefer will promote cards on FS1, Fox, Showtime, and the rest of the broadcasters tied with Haymon; come the end of 2017, Richard Schaefer would've delivered the more meaningful slate of fights than Oscar, without much question
styles make fights
Scary thing is had he gotten past Hammer I think they would have tried to manoeuvre him into position for a shot at Wilder / Parker / Joshua.
Can you imagine how Joshua vs Price would have ended..... :nono:
The gas tank is now in serious question, but for 6 rounds, any of the champions would be facing off against a 6'8, 270lb heavyweight with pop, a good developing heavy jab, and a boxing brain in the corner that 1)understands what tools his fighter is working with and 2)can effectively communicate the scenarios in the fight, accurately, to give his guy the best chance to win.
Wilder has already shown me that he can take a big heavyweight punch and keep his stamina to box a hard 12 round fight without much issue, but I still need to see if Joshua can push a hard 10/12 round pace or whether Joseph Parker can actually take a bigtime punch.
Always?
PBC bashing from most (not saying all) fans is/was due to Haymon having this massive stable and yet producing crappy match-ups. The last 3 years were miserable no matter what way you cut it. This year has been much better and the criticism has dropped off a lot.
The FS1 cards have been producing consistently competitive fights for basically the entire PBC run, if we're honest about it.
They were obvious showcase fights along the way, but even a good majority of the PBC fights on the other broadcasts were fairly matched and compelling fights, yet still got trashed on.
