And who exactly was in the division at the time that was 1st rate competition?? Which was why I agreed that it depended on the level of a division whether champs should stay there
He could have tried to unify with Joe Calzaghe, but that 0 would have went.
But i agree, it is dependant on comp in your weight class, recently for example you have Floyd goign up through 5 weights and winning titles in all of them but not hanging around long enough in any 1 to really test himself, on the flipside you could take hopkins, record 20 defenses in one weight class but through the years the division is pretty weak and his biggest fights came against guys who had to move up in weight for him.
I dont think staying at one weight is underrated at all but not for bullshit mandatories like ottke used to or say Sturm at the moment
RJJ - If you had bothered throwing a punch or 2 you may have won that last one, the only shot you through floored him, if you decide to fight again show up to fight, go out swinging
But lets be honest... its over
Griffin 2 showed what he was capable of when he wanted to make an example, Virgil hill body shot and vinny Paz, still the only fight I think where in one round not 1 punch was landed
i dont blame briggs at all, this is more bullshit from green, a shot rjj, siacca hadnt fought in 5 years and briggs in over 3 years, how about fighting someone that will fight back and is active, how about cunningham? Dawson? Flores? Tarver?my mother?, someone that will punch back, couldnt do that because green knows he's a fraud and the payday would end, green is a douche and a disgrace and i cant wait to see him laid out! this looks worse for him than briggs in my opinion
aside from the advantages Roy would have physically, at that stage in his career Roy was fearless, he would go in looking to demolish opponents, it wasn't till a bit later on that he became more about self preservation
Savon would have been one of the most dominant heavies ever! He would have been a bit heavier as a pro, but he just had the perfect mix, speed of hand and foot, movement, power, balance, everything was there. And all though its amatuer, look at the roll call on his record, aside from tua and brewster - golota, kirk johnson, kransniqi, sultan ibragimov, david izon , ray mercer, shannon briggs.
A treat to watch on an amatuer level, a shame we never saw him pro
Well I'm just trying to get an idea of who most boxing fans respect for their resumes. That was basically my goal of this thread. I notice that there are many fighters who get labeled as guys who didn't fight anyone, so I was like hmm in this modern day, who do people respect as far as quality of opposition?
who decides who is a "somebody" or a "nobody"?.
Every fighter fights nobodys early on, but when fighters like Mayweather, Jones Jr, Toney etc who are/were so dominating people always say "well, that guy (opponent)wasnt that good anyway"
I think Mayweathers resume is up there - Corrales, Gatti, Castillo x 2, Judah, also Jones' - Hopkins, Toney, Tarver, Hill, Ruiz, Paz. Lennox defeated everyone he fought - take rematches into account, you cant ask for much more
Dela Hoya has some great names on his as well, but as much as i like him, he did lose to the best names on that list, as did Gatti and Corrales
Its all opinion
Complain? Did you see me complaining? :)
Yeah a text book fighter but not a P4P level fighter. I mentioned his size because that's the only thing that gives an advantage to get his victories. The "OLD VITALI" who fought Lewis can send this guiy down crashing to the canvas.
As long he doesnt come crashing down on top of the big hitters and score a tko win, he will be beaten soundly
Roy's ego is so big he still thinks hes a big star and can make demands like one.He should be happy that any top level guy would fight him.
its any easy excuse now for the so called top guys, calzage, hopkins etc. who didnt want to go any where near jones for years to come out now and say -he's all washed up, why should i fight him?
Its all just a cop -out, they would have got there heads handed to them in Jones' prime, they are now just using Jones' name to prop up there own fading careers.
As much as i like Hopkins, he still cant tie Jones' boots!
Wlad sems to have ironed out the problems he had earlier in his career and looks to be hitting his peak, Tua hasnt fought anyone of name in years and is well and truly in the twighlight of his career - Wlad would be the first one to stop him at this point, 5 years ago this is a totally different fight but now wlad wipes the floor with him
vitali klitschko was a world kickboxing champ of some form, he would have gone well (as long as he didnt injure himself of course)
Cintron with his wrestling background could fair well, any boxer that could learn to avoid/block a takedown will do well ala Liddell, chuck cannot wrestle real well and has basically no ground game but is pretty much as good as it gets at avoiding a takedown and keeping it on his feet where usually he has the advantage as most boxers would
Been into since i was around 10, so 20+ years. My old man used to sit me down and watch these old videos he had of Ray Robinson and Marciano and others, i still have these tapes most of which you cant get on DVD
alot of people don't give cotto credit for it, but cotto is strong as an ox, he's just short, i bet he's as pshyically strong as most middleweight
Agreed, Cotto proved his talent last week, his chin is better at this weight he's still young and learning every fight, at this point in his career against a prime 147 Tito, Tito takes him on points just - maybe a knock down either side (tito's chin was just a suspect as cotto's is supposed to be)
I say this because i dont think we have seen the best of Cotto yet, it will be another year or 2 until he hits his peek
I'd like to have seen him give Toney a rematch, a fit Toney
a what? never heard of it
Seriously though, jones fought and beat everyone they put in front of him (upto tarver 1) and did it easily, what more can you really ask for? I dont think he ducked anyone, Yeah there are fights people would have liked to have seen Benn, Calzage, Michaelchczi but would the results have really been any different to everybody else?
He unfortunatley is one of these fighters like a mayweather and a handful of others that keep winning but people always name someone that they havent fought and its like " yeah roy beat toney, hopkins, hill and ruiz but he ducked the Klitschkos and Lennox Lewis"
As much as we may want them to they cant fight everyone
really whats the difference? If he fights all the above and wins there will always be someone else he should have fought, if he fights and loses he will get the "told you so's", - dammned if you do - dammned if you dont
He's not my favourite fighter but he is the best and will/would beat all the above mentioned imo, i agree with ultimate that williams would give him the most trouble but would still win.
And why not have a go at mma for a new challenge?, he will bring alot more exposure to a sport that is rapidly growing and he might suprise a few people and win a couple of fights
just rush in and get him in ankle and Lewis would fall down in second. Well Sudo I am not to sure about this game plan because as soon as Tito went to just rush In I have a feeling that he would be on his back staring up at the cieling trying to figure out how he Is going to pry his nose off of his cheek.
Spot on!
Nothing would stop Ortiz's take downs like a nice swift 250 pound uppercut
He'll fight the winner of Povetkin vs Chambers then maybe the winner of Peter vs Maskaev if Vitali doesn't come back.
Unless the madatory for the wbo belt (asuming he wins it) kicks up a stink and wants to fight him as well, i think unfrotunatley he will be stripped of one of his belts for not fighting one of the mandatories, its b.s but heaven forbid we have one true champion
let's not think ahead buddy, look what happened to williams....
cotto is not gonna beat mayorga and margarito may not beat quintana.....
Agreed, Mayorga will KO Cotto if it happens - is this fight a go? If so when?
I dont see Marg getting past Cintron either but you never know
