Like someone else said, I can't see HBO paying Carl what he wants.....I'm a bit baffled that they seem to lowball GGG's opponents, if they want a star they will have to pay for it
You really have to filter what Paulie says, some is great boxing insight....this would be in the "other" category.
Paulie is not a better fighter now than when he fought Diaz and Cotto or Hatton...this is just nonsense
I don't mind a little clinching if the rest of the fight makes up for it, Lewis was really fun to watch and Amir can be as well.
I find it funny that everybody sharts on Khan for the Diaz fight but forget that Porter went life and death with him as well. Porter got all the love for a while and Amir....well we know what he got and I can't believe this thread isn't full of it.
You cum catching pacf@g.......didn't pacquiao fight dlh at the full 147 mark before his cw fight with cotto?
I think it's pretty clear Pac and Floyd are both guilty
A title fight should never be allowed at a catch weight. If a fighter wants to show up light, then its cool. But if you are fighting for a title the weight limit should be the same weight that other previous champions won at and not below. Or else its just a tainted championship.
Yup, forgot to mention that showing up light is perfectly fine.
Pretty much everything should be standardized in boxing taking this pu$$y negotiating tactics out of fights.
IMO nobody asks tough questions like Ol'Larry. I for one will be sad to see him go. Loved how he got under Floyd's skin and made him look like a spoiled little girl.
Ha, I just posted in another thread that I think Crawford could come up from LW and clean out the division. Garcia is going to get smoked soon enough, can you imagine him fighting Thurman or Pac? He'd be brutalized. Floyd would make him look like he walked right off the street drunk. He's really got nowhere to go but Peterson for some sort of "name" fight.
There's no central authority to dictate any of the things you're asking for.
As for CWs and titles, the only guys who fight at CWs for the most part are the big names. And the organising bodies want to get paid so they'll always play along with the guys who bring significant money in.
If any of them make a principled stance and refuse to sanction a bout, someone else will only be too happy to take their business.
Sadly you are totally right. Pure fantasy on my part I know, I just don't think you should be regarded as having a fighters mentality if you demand, or allow your team to demand these things.
Some good points, like someone else said the system is just too open for abuse. I wouldn't have a problem with a non-title CW fight between say a MW and a LHW just to make a big fight, that's not so bad. That's just meeting in the middle between to different sized guys. But draining guys in your own division should not be tolerated and makes you look like a pu$$
There is just too much the A-side can demand and it will never change, ***** it's only going to get worse actually. It just cheapens the sport and the legacies of the fighters involved.
Lets take the recent example of the Maidana glove debacle...I'm not trying to single out Floyd because Manny and other aren't innocent either. Hypotheticaly you are having a boxing party and get some of your friends to come over who aren't that into boxing. The damn fight all of a sudden might not happen because of comission approved gloves that Floyd doesn't like. A friend asks why would this happen if the gloves are legit??? I guess I respond that they are punchers gloves and Maidana is a puncher, so.....they say that's stupid the Yankees don't tell other teams what bats to use.....I just shake my head.
This A-side stuff is out of control and getting worse.
I interviewed for an internship at Main Events last summer (didn't get it), one of the things they say they like to do is have their interns go on boxing forums (such as this) and hype their product.
Just throwing that nugget of information out there. I like what Kathy Duva's done for Kovalev's career, but all in all I find the NBC telecasts they have put on to contain far too many mismatches. If you're going to pick a promoter not named Arum or De La Hoya or Haymon then maybe I'd go with Lou DiBella, he looks out for the interests of his fighters but will put them in good scraps too, and isn't afraid to work with other promoters.
I don't mind Dibella either, but I think Kathy admitted that she didn't have a deep enough roster to do what she wanted to on NBC.
imo it depends on the situation. for pac vs algieri, the CW isn't really a big deal since algieri is more than big enough to make the 144 lb limit and pac is small enough that he can drain himself down without issue.
only times when it's an issue is when you set up a CW fight to bring up a small fighter and come weigh-in you don't honor the CW or if you're a champ in a division (fought two champion fights there without a CW) and you demand a champion in that same division to fight you at a catchweight. Also dragging someone down 7 or 8 lbs is also bad.
but if you're a small fighter moving up in weight then a CW seems fine imo. it's not a big deal.
I think the CW was probably more for Pac's sake than Chris's.....and if it wasn't a big deal than why is it there....it's becoming a normal thing for big name guys and it's cowardly IMO
I don't understand why they're letting him fight....the last time I saw him he had electric whip hands or something and he was teabagging Iron Man, that's just not fair and he's coming for Money May next
Wasn't Thurman just offered mad money by JayZ? I am baffled as to why he would turn down the opportunity to be the crown jewel of a promotional company. I guess he's tied to Haymon and probably couldn't accept if he wanted to, but man is his career being torpedoed.
Haymon is keeping him away from his other client's for a reason, he gets the last say on who they fight. Thurman needs to be telling him to Fuc off and beating up on the Watson's after fights not thanking Al.
Roy said it himself that he didn't want to do that to guys. He would carry fighters man. People really fail to appreciate just how great a fighter he was. I as much as anyone wished he faced a few different fighters to make it so his resume were up to par with his abilities that's why he will never be ATG 1. But skills and abilities wise, he is the greatest to ever lace up a pair of gloves.
He really did carry a lot of guys, IMO that was a silly thing to do....if he fought in Griffin mode he could have been categorized with SRR IMO. I get the sentiment behind it and I think everyone would have to admit he had another gear we rarely got to see, but in a way I think it's disrespectful to take it easy on anyone in any sport. People come along in every sport that make the sport adapt to them like Gretzky(I'm from Canada) and Woods. If those guys took it easy they wouldn't have made their respective sports so much better. Not that guys didn't emulate Roy, I just think he could have been so much more.
If Khan didn't have such a sh1t chin, he would be a threat.
Nonsense
Khan's chin may not be the greatest, but fair observation will show you that it's more his gameplan that gets him in those situations. Floyd does not have the power of Garcia or Maidana which troubled Khan and I highly doubt it would turn into the type of slugfest that gets Amir in trouble. There is a reason many different boxers and people in the sport say Khan is trouble for Floyd.
To say it would end in round 1 is just silly and bandwagon hating on Khan. Danny would be absolutely clowned by Floyd, Khan would actually be an interesting fight.
IMO the style that gets Khan in trouble might actually work against Floyd....don't know if he would win, but I think boxing/brawling would be his best bet to pull it off.
He absolutely is. I don't mean resume wise. Not even close. But I mean I would take a Prime RJJ to beat any fighter in the history of this sport in or around his weight class. He had everything it took to be a great fighter and he had it in spades.
Love GGG, but have to agree. To clown good/great fighters like he did was out of this world and you can't help but feel like he was playing most of the time(hand behind back)
For the rematch with Griffin he was done playing and showed what a PO'd Roy could do and it was kind of scary. Hard to find anyone in history to touch that Roy IMO
Cindarr always was one of Floyd's favourite Visionaries. He wont leave Vegas without his titanium, velvet lined briefcase, filled with his bestest ever action figures!

"Rarrrrr. I'm a Gorilla!!"
"Hey Floyd! You do know that those figures where made in the Philippines right? And you know you else is from the Philippines!?!"
"Yo man, f*ck Hasbro. Where my He-Man at? I only play with Mattel!"
probably shouldn't be laughing so hard in the office....awesome reference to awesome toys!!!
Floyd don do buness with Hasbro....pure gold man, pure gold
You know why he advised those guys not to join Roc Nation sports-his personal situation with Jay-Z. Of course those decisions are terrible. Given the context, understandable.
Other years were not an issue because he wasn't named as the most powerful man in the sport. Since he has consolidated his power-a number of posters have a problem with that-even when he was putting on good cards.
You are right-but they are not being made by anyone except for a few occasions. As for the battered wife thing-that clears up your opinions.
You seem to have decided how you feel about him based on frivolous stuff like Berto's purses on HBO. Some of the fights he was in were damn good.
You judge people based on the product they give you. Haymon gave little to nothing this year and should be judged on that. As for 2013 and next year, same thing-judge on what he did/does.
Nope don't care about Berto's purses at all, or anyone else's for that matter. He had a lot of leverage with HBO at the time and used it to put ***** fights on most of the time.....a lot of wasted Saturdays for me. I really enjoyed watching Cotto come up and thought he was matched great, I can't think of one Haymon fighter who compares to how Cotto was brought along.
Fact-he's put on way more showcase cards than anyone else....I just don't get why any of us boxing geeks would support that.
Stop trying to lessen the blow. Manny just isn't as popular or as much of a force as you and other pac fans on NSB claim. Fans are getting turned off by his continuing to campaign at WW and make these kind of fights and are showing their displeasure by not buying the fights.
Whatever the reasons are, it's not up for debate that Manny is losing a lot of ground in PPV sales.
Back in the late 90's and early 00's I actually got excited for a lot of PPV's and would try and talk my friends into watching them with me....now I don't bother. The biggest PPV in the last while was Floyd/Nelo and IMO that was a crappy event too, Garcia fight was good, but it's sad that it was a treat to have a good fight on an undercard.
Fine, but it still isn't as bad as you make it out to be. Who would you have had him fight going back to 2009? Please don't throw out guys who are hot now.
I think, respectfully, you threw Berto out there without really remembering who he had fought. Yes, he got headline fights when he shouldn't of. But he also made great, exciting fights. If not his purse, what problems did you have?
My problem is that it was taking up dates when better fights could have taken place....we don't get that many fights on HBO in a year and losing them to Berto just rankled me at the time....he just didn't seem that special. There were a lot of fighters he could have been matched against at the time IMO, Cotto, Clottey, Williams, Margs for example would have had me interested at the time.
ok. if this is your position I can't argue with it. I would disagree about volume of showcase fights. You used Berto as an example. Since Jan 1, 2009 he fought
collazzo
urango
Quintana
freddy hernandez
Ortiz
jan zaveck
ghost
soto karass
Steve Chambers
Is that really as bad as you claim? Some of these have been great fights.
When you look at who else was in the division at the time the answer is no they don't impress me that much
I have never seen a fighter threaten to fire his own father/trainer for mentioning another fighter...he went off on one of his hugggge fans in Stephen A Smith for saying the truth that we want him to fight Manny not Amir fvcking Khan....I do not know what it is about Manny but Floyd seems terrified of him
Good points, I wish they would just get it over with...don't care who wins either-just fight
.....was your account hacked?
Someone who said fighters themselves turned Thurman down.....They can't, Haymon has the final say on who they fight....some of the guys were'nt signed to Al at the time but now there is no reason Thurman should be fighting the trash he's fighting. He's the interim champ and the WBA should be held accountable for not even trying to set up a shot at Floyd or making him vacate.....ridiculous all around.
And to those who said it's a transition year, to @rse with you....he has the deepest stable in the game and there is no valid excuse to hold the sport hostage for a year. You don't get kicked off HBO for no reason, especially when you have the fighters he has....it's because the guy is absolute poison. Why do you think Jay-Z is messing with him, Jay-Z doesn't care about boxing, he just wants to funk with Haymon and it really looks bad making his fighters turn down massive purses in the process.
Seriously, what kind of manager advises their clients to turn down their biggest paydays and vacate belts that are the only reason they're relevant in a division? It's madness and it's too bad that hardcore fans who have a clue don't really have any clout resulting in ratings for a bout like Garcia-Salka.
man i cant wait until both of these guys retired or fight eachother to get this over with. this is starting to get rediculous with all these threads.
The Truth is right here
I guarantee you Arum did not expect this to do well and that having the fight in Macau in some way recuperated those losses for him.
Bob Arum doesn't expect good numbers from Pacquiao/Algieri. He's smarter than that.
Exactly this, there's no way they expected this fight to sell. I can't see how Floyd doesn't use this dagger if negotiations go down though.
