Funny how Martinez is being called a "washed up cripple" and all sorts of things, yet Cotto was a 2to1 underdog. Martinez was favored to win the fight. Martinez was the reigning, lineal middleweight champion. As of right now, Martinez being washed up and "crippled" is all just speculation and unfounded claims based on personal opinions. There is no evidence that Martinez had issues with his knees in the fight. It is highly possible that Cotto just rocked him early & had the right game plan to make him look that bad. Cotto is probably the best technical fighter that Martinez has ever faced. I think Cotto deserves all the credit in the world right now. He took a huge risk, worked hard, got in great shape, developed a good strategy and executed it perfectly.
Martinez has displayed tremendous character in defeat. I admire his character. Even Cotto could learn from him, as Cotto just leaves the ring after suffering a defeat. Sergio stayed in the fight despite being pummeled, begged for it not to be stopped and made no excuses after it was over. He even said how he respected his trainer's decision. Sergio really seems like a great person, and other fighters/fans could learn a lot from him.
Honestly, I take more of an issue with Golovkin being #7...
I'm a big fan of Golovkin. I see plenty of potential in him to become great. It appears that many top fighters are hesitant to get in the ring wit him. However, that is irrelevant here. As far as his accomplishments go, I feel it is preposterous for him to be ranked #7 in the entire world. Is the p4p rankings now based on speculation and potential? I feel that it should be based on accomplishments.
wake me up when these bum stop FIGHTING BUMS SO FAR THEY ARE TRASH
Two young kids that are just starting their careers....relax, & enjoy watching them develop and start to face different tests
Haters claim Fernando Vargas was pushed too fast and yet, want to see complete rookies like Verdejo fight p4p types already. The hate is comedy doe.
Exactly. He just turned 21. There is no need to push him too fast. He's been staying active, and is adapting nicely to the professional game.
Sylvester Stallone is in the HOF....
Something is terribly wrong if Cotto doesn't get in....
And yes, the notion that Cotto doesn't belong is preposterous.
george foreman was the best imo ... great insight n tactical breakdown.. i also like malignaggi...jones is mehh .. lennox sucked... i wanna see some mike tyson for the historic view
Yeah, I feel like Paulie really does a great job. He seems like a pretty smart dude, and he brings a lot of insightful commentary as far as explaining things going on in the ring from a boxer's perspective.
For example, when he was stressing how Danny Garcia was catching & punching with Matthyysse, a power puncher...explaining how that is not something that is easy to do.
He picks up on things that the other commentators don't usually pick up on. The only time I can recall seeing him be somewhat biased was during the Khan-Collazo fight. That is pretty understandable, though, because Collazo is a good friend of his. I remember seeing them hanging out in NY.
C'mon give the man a break. Roy Jones is a career boxer who probably didn't even finished High school. That's how he has earned his living. He was never some Harvard law school college professor who had been known for being a wordsmith. Therefore, his limited grasp of proper grammatically speaking English could be somewhat expected.
Which I clearly stated in my post..
What did he do that was rude? It's unfortunate but boxers are humans as well and they can have bad days
Absolutely.
I recognize that. I'm sure he is a decent man, and his encounter with me certainly does not define him as an individual. That is why I don't really hate him, and have still rooted for him in his fights after that day.
But someone of his stature can give a kid so much motivation & make their whole day by providing them with a friendly encounter that leaves them with a pleasant memory....It was just very disappointing to me after looking up to him for so many years.
Again, I'm sure he is a good guy, but the reality is that he was quite rude to me when we met. I'm sure other people have met him & had great encounters. It is what it is.
how was roy rude to u?
what did roy do to you?
Nothing too crazy...
I always admired Roy Jones. I owned a DVD of his greatest hits. I always watched his highlights on YouTube. As a young boxer, he was always someone that I looked up to.
I had the opportunity to meet him in New York back in 2010 before the Cotto-Foreman fight. Just the thought that I could get picture with him made my whole day. My friend and I asked him how he was doing...he didn't respond...stood there for an awkward second...asked again....and he responded with "you guys want a picture or what?" ...whatever....My friend went first, and I took the picture. Then when it was my turn, he said, "I gotta get going" & he walked away before I could get a picture...
I understand he must have been busy, but I wish he understood that he could have made my day just by simply taking a picture with me. He couldn't wait one more second? And his tone just came off as very rude from the beginning....it was just disappointing to me, being someone that always admired him.
He must be used to to people coming up to him all the time, and sometimes you're probably just not in the mood....I understand that. That's why I don't hate him or anything like that, but I'd be lying if I said my opinion didn't change about him after that day.
I had a totally different experience with RJJ..he was real cool, posed for pics..and even chatted..maybe you and your friend made him feel awkward..you just have to be upfront with them, and save the small talk for later!
Yeah, it was totally my fault...
Sorry, RJ
I never meant to make you feel awkward (!)
Yeah, I saw that, I took that as him mishearing Roy - but its entirely possible he mixed up the words resurgent and resilient into a new word.
Classic confabulation.
He clearly said re-sig-er-ent
I didn't mishear him...watched it a few times lol. Later on in the round he actually said "resilient"
hey can anyone tell me if they takled about the roy fight tomorrow on fnf? i missed the first part of it tonight... just curious
nope.... just Klit-Gomez
Anyone know who is promoting Andrade?
Star Boxing
I work for CES Boxing in Providence he fought on one of our cards in his second fight. I wish he signed with CES lol.
This was some of the worst calling on a fight I have seen in all my years of watching the sport.
and then the questions from Jim Grey at the end about Karas being fortunate for the the shoulder injury and once he noticed it did he start taking over because of that.
I could tell Berto was going to lose this fight from the first round on.
Are you P-Turtle from Fight Night? I remember knocking you out in the last round lol......highlight of my video gaming career!
Yea haha, I was a legend in that game man. Which fight night champion, round 3 or round 4?
It was Champion. I tried playing it recently, and man has it changed.
The second one is how easy it was for Zab to land on Garcia, and how close he came to KO Garcia in round 10.
This is quite the exaggeration. Garcia's legs never wobbled, he never went down, and he didn't even get hit with a lot of punches. Judah certainly landed good punches in the 10th that got the crowd excited, as well as the announcers, but come one....watch the round again.
How was Judah so close to the KO? That statement is nothing more than speculation. It was a good round for Judah, no doubt, but your statement appears to be an unfair speculation.
I'm hoping to see Felix Verdejo & Jayson Velez on there....
I'm trying to think of any Argentino prospects, but I can't...though an Alex DeJesus-Cesar Cuenca rematch would be awesome...
Cotto evidently holds rights to the co-main.... So it'll be one of his fighters. I'm not expecting much
lol we'll probably see Abner Cotto in the co-main
I'm a big Cotto fan but he's gotten into the habit of commanding so much of the budget for his main events that his undercards suffer. If I were you Id plan for a nice night out on the town and an arrival time to MSG soley for the big fight. Hopefully I'm wrong.
Yeah, I'm planning on spending the whole day there & going to the parade the next day. It should be a blast regardless of the undercard.....but yeah, I'm having a hard time seeing this being a good undercard.
Or Jose fighting for a world title
Hahah yeah, I forgot about Jose Cotto. It's still amazing to me how he was able to hurt Canelo in their fight. That's the only time I can recall seeing Canelo hurt like that.
So what you basically said is....In a battle between two fighters, the better fighter usually wins, and that's what happened here.
superb observation :)
I like how he's one inch taller going from the first video to the last, that's understandable considering one could still be growing at that age, just thought it was funny.
lol I'm not sure what his real height is, but he appears to be very small with a short reach.
santos got serious pop:boxing:
Yeah, he seems to be a good puncher to both he body & head.
Yea because Cotto & Gatti are clearly on the same level as fighters...
Their fights with Gianluca Branco & Alfonso Gomez clearly serve as legitimate evidence towards the claim.....
Cotto > Gatti
It is preposterous anyone could think otherwise.
Cotto is nothing like Bruseles.
This comparison is constantly thrown out there. I don't understand it at all. The results of the Bruseles fight are pretty much completely irrelevant as far as attempting to draw conclusions to a Mayweather-Cotto fight. Cotto and Bruseles are friends, Puerto Rican, and were at one time both trained by Evangelista....comparisons end there. Cotto is by far superior to Bruseles, and Gatti too for that matter.
