The Soviet boxing program was god-tier. Not just Ukraine, but all of the -stan countries tend to produce excellent boxers in general.
Or maybe just Slav genetics in general :P The three S's - Slavs, Scots, and Samoans - are always just hard as f***.
are they going to 160 to protect his health? or is it because he has even harder fights at 154?
I would HOPE that they're going to fight a few at 160 in preparation for GGG. Emphasis on hope...
The thing is that when Golovkins opponents get in the ring you can tell they are scared. Their performance is absolute ****. They are scared to stand up to him. Stevens and Brook are the only ones I can think of who fought Golovkin with the same intensity they do other opponents.
I praise Golovkin for giving us fights even though they are tomato cans. Not his fault but I'm not going to praise him as an atg fighter for it.
Add in the intimidating Russian/Soviet/Eastern European aura. I like to call it the "Emelianenko Effect."
I disagree with Canelo trying to be Mayweather. If he was, he'd be hamming it up, trash-talking, and trying to make himself into someone who people paid to watch get beaten. Instead he's a mostly humble and soft-spoken guy.
For all the flak he catches for avoiding GGG so far we all have to keep in mind he basically supports his entire extended family. Taking a huge risk for the sake of "glory" might simply not be worth it for him.
I don't see how you could be considered an all-time great without having fought your biggest rivals. Win or lose, as long as you give a good account of yourself. For instance, I think Mikkel Kessler deserves to be remembered as a great fighter despite losing to Calzaghe, Ward, and Froch. I mean, he didn't get blown out in any of those losses, and nobody can say he padded his record with fighters that he outclassed.
I just see GGG eating this guy alive, nobody cuts the ring off like GGG.
I think I remember one of the commentators last night pointing out that Kovalev wasn't cutting off the ring, he was chasing Ward around.
Who knows what might have happened if Kovalev had cut off the ring as well as GGG would have.
They both fought well, and the fight could have gone either way. Coupled with the fact that they fought against legit opponents in their prime and risked their undefeated records, I'd say they both came out winners.
It's very rare for any great athlete to retire when they feel they still have something to offer to their sport. If they were inclined to do so, they would never have become great in the first place.
their main event fight hasnt really live up to the hype as of late. and i know in boxing we get this also, but lately a lot of the "big fights" in the ufc has turn into a total let down.
and a lot of the old fighters that i used to love to watch is not fighting anymore and the new fighters is just too technical that when they fight eachother, you get 5 minutes of them rolling on the ground trying to submit eachother but because their skill set is equal to one another it just goes on like this for the whole fight.
I've noticed this too. It's almost like the UFC hype machine is too good, and because a fight in MMA can end in an instant the "big" fighters fight way more carefully than the undercard guys going in with something to prove.
Boxing has fights like this too, but in boxing they're still standing and throwing punches when the fight becomes defensive and technical.
actually ufc has been on a down fall. i was a huge fan of it 5-6 years ago and follow it closely but its been slowly going down the drain. i find myself more interested in boxing now where as before i didnt really care much about boxing.
Came here to post this. I started watching combat sports because of the UFC, got into K-1 and kickboxing, and now am a bigger fan of boxing than I ever was with the other two sports. It just depends on the person, I'd say.
Speaking of replays, I'm a fan of the ref cam thing they've been doing on PBC. Great replays of action in between rounds.
Same. I guess what this question really comes down to is:
a) Make better fights.
b) Ensure integrity in the sport.
c) Engage the fans more. Ref cam, maybe pre-match locker cam, etc.
ie. Things that will never happen.
As a fan, I just want to see the top guys fight each other. However, I don't blame them for chasing money - this is the way they feed and support their families, and one can only box at the highest level for maybe a decade. It's a small window to make sure that you're set for life.
I thought this was fascinating. I know this is UFC stuff, but considering MMA is a competitor to boxing I thought this thread belonged here.
I'm not so sure about that, that would be like comparing hockey and soccer. Some people prefer MMA, and some prefer Boxing.
But everywhere else, boxing is doing well. It has become huge again in the UK.
Pleasantly surprised about this. It seems Eddie Hearn is doing good work over there. I mean, I set aside time to watch Burns vs. Relikh, two fighters I've never even really heard about (I'm from Canada btw). That there was any buzz around this fight at all outside of the UK is impressive in and of itself.
I remember a longtime ago, I read an article on here. It discused a new type of technology that could be used for fights.
Apparently, they could embed a chip or device inside the glove that can actually measure and track the force of a punch or punches and that this technology can be used in real time for the judging of fights or as a statistic.
Idk how I feel about this, because of the chances of it being manipulated or tampered with by corner men or promoters. I would also be skeptical of the accuracy. But this is something game changing if it would eventually be implemented in boxing on a world scale.
Not sure how I feel about this either. Like you said, it could easily be manipulated in order to prevent the bigger draw from losing on points via slight alterations in the firmware controlling the chips, etc.
That being said, people moaned about goal line technology being implemented in soccer matches, yet it's turned out pretty well. If you've ever watched a soccer match with a disputed goal, the crowd goes silent as soon as the goal line replay confirms whether or not a goal was a goal.
Is your site like Rooq's Boxing Promoter?
He's a poster on this site with a (I think) relatively successful Promoter simulation game.
http://www.rooqboxing.com/Default.aspx
It's not a site, it's an actual game that I'm trying to get on Steam. It's similar to Football Manager or any of the Grey Dog Software games.
best he gonna get. He can either accept he teh b side and eat shit (like mayweather, pacquaio, canelo, etc etc have all done to land teh Aside fight) and fight canelo and beat his ass and become the boss and no longer have to eat **** or cry unfair and get nothing and just say they ducking lmfao.
It's not even totally clear that he's the B-Side, really. His name is a lot more well-known nowadays, and Canelo's rep is the one suffering.
Canelo and BJS are much younger than GGG. They're probably waiting for age to slow him down a bit before taking the fight. Not unlike what Mayweather did with Pac.
I got Salido vs Frank Vargas as The Fight Of The Year....of course granted that the year is not over....Great Post by the way and that explaining the SEC...hahaha that was hilarious....I personally had Hagler defeating Leonard...
I personally liked Thurman-Porter as FOTY... your choice ain't bad though :boxing:
Marquez absolutely EARNED and deserves the right to brag about that beautiful well timed (not lucky as the idiots say) punch!!!
This, really. I love Pac, but JMM was waiting all night to time that shot.
Good call. Parker-Haye could be a really, really exciting fight - regardless of whether Haye deserves it or not.
And if Parker wins, it immediately vaults him into the limelight, maybe setting up a match with AJ. I'm okay with this.
