Ward - showing heart, being able to recuperate after a knockdown, showing tremendous resilience thereafter to "win" a Very controversial disputed, close decision( i had Kovalev winning)
Kovalev - Being able to knockdown and hold his own against one of the slickest and best tactician today. winning in many/MOST peoples eyes even if he "loss" the officially.
poll to follow

LOL...ahhhh. i picked ward to win. :bottle:
They fought to my expectations
It was a 50-50 fight going in, and they fought a 50-50 fight that could've gone either way
People that predicted Kovalev would win, said it would be by brutal KO, which didn't happen
People who thought Ward would win a clear UD and suffer no KD's were also wrong
Yep the knockdown sealed the fight for kovalev no doubtNo, you are not wrong for making that argument as a lot of fight fans saw it the same way as you.
However, on the flip side, I can understand those who make the argument that Ward didn't lose the fight and they aren't wrong either.
I have to say neither. As both were unable to impose their wills on the other. Kovalev didn't dominate or beat up Ward and Ward didn't dominate or beat up Kovalev.
Aside, from Andre Ward getting off the canvas and surviving that second round KD, it was a very evenly skilled and tactical match; A virtual stalemate that could have been scored either way.

Ward's stock definetly went down IMO. Getting wobbled by jabs, getting put in the 2nd, desperetly holding and lifting opponents leg... all while fresh
Some people had him almost on Floyd's level - can you even imagine Floyd doing those things? remember mosley fight.. that's the difference. Andre is great but not all time great.
I think degale gives ward all he can handle as james is just as crafty inside ans ward depends too much on physically imposing himself on opponents chest.
He ate a stiff jab while moving directly down to hit the body. That was probably one of the hardest jabs in his entire career. He's above Floyd. He's fought better competition when they were relevant.

Kovalev mentally wilted when his punches could not slow his opponent. He could not raise the tempo without losing rounds by larger margins, beaten to the punches and out thought.
Kovalev has reached his ceiling.
Agreed on that. Kov won this one due to a good first half of the fight but I see him losing decisively in the rematch.
I think that Ward's decision to fight cab drivers for the last 5 years really bit him for the first 6 rounds, Kov had 12 fights in the last 5 years and against much better competition. Ward hadnt been in with an A level guy in 5 years. I think that if Ward was active and facing the top guys he would have done much better in the first 6. Kov was landing clean on him, Ward was showing his ring rust defensively.
I have to disagree I think whyte is going to knock chisora out who is a real Hw, little Ward has the frame of a 160 pounder really, his chin would never hold up to any solid shot from a 230 plus guy based on his last fight I saw..
Both are garbage, Ward would beat both.
Unfortunately Wards stock went down. Really through no fault of his own, but when a fighter is given a gist decision when the preponderance of observers have it going the other way by a healthy margin, somehow it's held against the boxer who got the gift rather than the judges who were either complicit or incompetent.
Kovalevs stock didnt change imo.
In beating ward he did what most saw, he landed more power punches, he visibly hurt ward , and he also dropped ward . His jab was very solid .his short right hands to wards ear were punishing and his rt uppercut was underated.
Wards stock went down imo. He was dropped , hurt , had his head snapped back on jabs , got hurt by jabs and was hit with rt uppercuts stepping in with an ear muff guard. He got caught with short rt hands consistently if he tried to exchange inside Or in the pocket.
Ward looked nothing like the great fighter he was in the past and looked vulnerable
I wasn't to impressed with either ,Kovalev looked like he swung a minute later in every rnd ,but i thought he won . I think Kovalev is the better fighter at LHW and the notion that the guy getting hit off balance by Kovalev Jabs says hes entertaining heavy weight fights is comical , id like to see that.:boxing:
Ward could box someone like Chisora to a wide decision, it'd be like Khan vs Canelo only Chisora can't put decent punches together like Canelo. Ward would easily beat him, likely Whyte too that guy is a poor mans Chisora.
I think Kovalev's stock rose because he wasn't robotic or overwhelmed. I did have him narrowly losing but his body language communicated control and he looked great. That alone is not enough to raise his stock in the face of a loss but the fact that so many people are rallying behind him is.
I think Ward has a bit of both. People saw him down. They saw him pushed around. They saw vulnerabilities.
They also saw a guy who would not relent. Who came back stronger after being down, and as the fight progressed.
The controversy is two-sided. He'll catch a lot of flack. But, he'll also get a lot of attention. A lot of people wanting to see him beat. Sometimes, they will pay to see you lose. And that money is just as good as fan money.
