Someone is exposed for reposting what he likes from Moyle and conveniently disregarding the rest. Watch out for Mcvey, I mean Ivich's alts!

“Langford fights consistently, possesses the punch, knows the game, and can whip them all right now, one after the other,” remarked John L. Sullivan, the first ever heavyweight champion, “Johnson knows this and sidesteps his fellow fighter at every turn of the road.” Langford had asserted his dominance in the sport of boxing, across nearly all weight classes. But he still lacked a title. - John L Sullivan 1909.

I have a couple of things I would like to say about the John L. article.

The article makes trying to pigeon hole John L.'s attitude on race and simultaneously his feelings towards JJ as HW Champion a bit tricky.

We know he wouldn't cross the color line. So you got to ask yourself, is John L. praising Langford or just using Langford to discredit JJ?

Which of course was very popular 'sport' for the next few years.

On the other hand are we seeing instead not a negative racial attitude on John L.'s part but instead a particular dislike for Johnson. I.e. "I have no problem with a Negro being champion but not this bore." (Not a real quote.)

Or is he just writng a boxing article?

This last thought I fear is just wishful thinking on my part -- I doubt any boxing writer during the JJ years was able to write a racial neutral article, (i.e. pro or con. )

So what's Sullivan up to? I wouldn't want to use this article as proof that the boxing community actually thought Langford could beat JJ.

My cynical nature makes me wonder if they (including the Great John L.) just liked Langford, Sam was a likable man, and just plain hated JJ.

          - - John L quite more advanced in his day than most people of today.

Spent a fair amount of time in his training camp for Jeffries and JJ and picked JJ to win, but not publicly until after the fight when his letter to the NYTimes was opened.

Sam Langford and Joe Jeanette also picked Jeffries to win saying he could beat Johnson with a ball and chin on his leg, or something close to that. Jeffries had not fought is six years, and ballooned up to 300+ LBS. They counting on the man the saw and knew to show up, not the shell of a man who did.

              - - Wish I could've been his nutritionist. Jeffries undertook that himself where getting down to prime fighting weight was the imperative, basically on a diet a canary would expire on.

              In short, he cannibalized himself.

I'd have him come in 250+ where he could walk JJ around using his natural size and strength.

Nice show of black solidarity from Sam and Joe!
When Johnson picked Schmeling to beat Louis you said he was a traitor to his race, on another forum. Jeffries never scaled 300lbs ,and he was down to weight a year before their fight.
Langford visited Jeffries training camp before he made his prediction.

Why have him come in heavier than he ever fought at? Johnson matched Jeffries for strength in the early rounds and he predicted he would.
Jeffries was down to 235lbs in July 1909 he had over a year to get in shape.

Sullivan said Langford was too small to ever beat Johnson
