This is a rather simple answer. Floyd chose to be the heel to become a bigger star. But if you ever meet the guy like I have done on a few occasions you can tell that he is a sensitive and caring guy. He's stays back to sign every autograph and take every picture with his fans.
Let me give you an example. At the Mayweather - De La Hoya presser at the Waldorf Astoria a few years back...a woman started screaming that "Oscar is gonna knock you out Floyd....he's gonna beat the **** out of you" she get going. What did Floyd do? He got up from his seat at the table walked over to the fan, took her hand and walked her over to De La Hoya and gave her a poster and told Oscar to sign it for her because she is a true fan.
Here's the sensitive side. When I was interviewing him at the press conference to announce the Judah fight, I asked him "What was it about Castillo that gave you so much trouble?" He said "Castillo didn't give me trouble." I said yes he did. He said "no he didn't, not because HBO said he did, that means hat he did." I said well I saw the fight and I had it a draw and if you were truly convinced you won it then why did you have a rematch? Then he we argued a little bit and that was that.
I'm just saying the guy obviously cares about what people say about him. He knows that when he wasn't a heel he was drawing flies in Fresno. His style is great for viewing for boxing fans but it might not be entertaining for the masses all the time but as the bag guy people get drawn to the drama. Some love it and some want his @ss handed to him...he's must see TV.
But the guy trains hard and puts his heart in to the sport and occasionally that comes out after he wins fights....he breaks down.
A lot you guys don't understand that these people are human. Not because you like Floyd that means you must hate Manny and vice versa. I love them both but I think Floyd is the best fighter I have ever seen and should they meet, I think Floyd would knock him out. I just think it's a bad style macth up. Does this mean I hate Pacman? No....I have picked Pac Man to beat everyone except for Oscar. I thought that he was going up too far and Pacman shocked me that night. I think he beats everybody other than Floyd from 147 down. I even thought he won the two Marquez fights.
Anyways I need these two guys to fight selfishly because it is the most important fight in boxing since De La Hoya - Trinidad
This was a great response! A lot of people forget that at the end of the day, these boxers are real people and there's more than what you see. At the same time, if your going to play the roll of an azzhole you shouldn't be upset when people treat you like one.
Clottey was never hurt by Pac he ended up looking better than pac he fought more like somebody who’s holding back than somebody who’s afraid of getting knocked out.
What would be the reason to hold back then if you're not getting hurt?
I think Mayweather losing would be a bigger upset because of his style and also becuase he is undefeated. I really beleive there is a bigger chance for Pacquiao to get hurt because he leaves himself open more trying to go for the KO. Clottey was hurting Cotto but let him off easy and spent way too much time bitching about fouls.
A lot of people voting for Pacquiao are proabably only doing it because they are the same ones who are saying the fight is not even competitive. Don't even lie guys, it would be a bigger shocker if Mayweather were to lose especially by KO.
Great Show
So far, I really like the show. It reminded me that boxers are still people with families to take care of. Something to think about the next time you hope a boxer gets knocked out or beaten to a pulp.
Well at least 1 poster supporting Pacman had the balls to post his reasons, however suspect they are.
Both were really ****ty, uncompetitive fights really. I just look at it as who had more of a chance at an upset when I think of which was more evil. Both really cheated in their own way I suppose.
In my opinion, the Floyd fight was worse just because Marquez had absolutely nothing to make the fight competitive due to his size and style. At least Margarito had the advantage of being the much bigger man and managed to really hurt Pacquaio at one point. The whole belt situation for that fight was crap but at the same time most fans on this site do not even count it.
Yeah, i either want him to get badly, or win, wierd aint it.
I don't think that's really weird. He's the underdog and normally that's who I root for. If Marquez really pulled it out his ass and won or hurt Pacquiao, you would really have to give him all the credit in the world. I don't think you could really be mad at that if it were to happen. In fighting, crazy **** can always happen but it's not very likely here in my opinion.
Isn't that better though? I'm not saying you're wrong for wanting Marquez to get beaten up. But wouldn't you rather have a fight with bad blood rather than a friendly sparring session like Clottey and Mosley? To me this fight is crap because of the weight where it's taking place because by no means has Pacquiao outgrown 140.
Anyway, having the opinion that he won is no reason to hate the guy.
I can see why people would be upset with this fight because of the conditions but I do think it's more exciting because there is a feud. There's actually some drama, not just two friendly guys getting in there. I don't hate Marquez. I just feel like if you're going to call someone out, take care of your business, you know?
Pacquiao HAS to beat the crap out of Marquez. If he fights another hard fought fight, Pacquiao is going to look bad not Marquez. So of course you want Marquez to get beaten badly.
That's true but that wouldn't be the reason why I would want him to get beaten up. It just seems that Marquez has made this into something more personal.
I'm with you 100%. This is what he wanted, he agreed to the weight. Matter of a fact the catchweight was Marquez request and the welterweight title is on the line. (Remember welterweight is between 141-147) Heck, him and Golden Boy at one at one point in time led a campaign for the fight wearing t-shirts on how he already beat Manny twice. So the rest of these so called fans just need to relax and wait for another classic battle.
Agree! If he doesn't get beat down, we at least know it will be a damn good fight. I know these guys are professionals but there has to be more personal beef between them which is why the fight doesn't bother me. I just really don't understand why people are up in arms about it when this is what Marquez has wanted for years.
;10604671']I don't want him to fight Martinez, there is nothing to gain there. The excuses will be rampant. "He got knocked out by a bigger man" etcetc. I want Pacquiao to loss to either, and I quote Gayweather or Piss Drinker. It'll happen too and when it does I'll be laughing all the way to the bank.
That's good. If it happens, hopefully you can sleep at night. Anyway Marquez is going to win, so we won't have to worry about that, right?
;10604646']Of course you want him to get his ass whooped. He talked "badly" about your god! :bottle::bottle:
It's okay though, when he makes Pacquiao look "over the hill"(The excuse you guys already prepared) in this fight, don't be sad. It was bound to happen sooner or later. It was either gonna be Gayweather or Piss Drinker, and after he gets his ass spanked, I hope most of you guys stick around and actually become boxing fans.
Wow! You are very angry. Don't act like you woudn't be happy if Pacquiao fought Mayweather or Martinez and got his head knocked off. Sometimes you just want to see a fight. For anyone who says go watch MMA if all you like is brutality, you wouldn't watch boxing if you didn't enjoy that part of it.
What I don't understand is that Pacquiao haters always say that he only beat up past prime, weight drained, and/or over the hill fighters. According to you guys he hasn't done anything special. Why would he need steroids then to do what any boxer could? What is suspicious about him beating up bums?
I just find it odd when someone says something a bit negative about Filipinos, they get all riled up about it.
When Teri Hatcher said that line about Filipino doctors, they got all pissed about it. They didn't get pissed at the writer of the episode, they got pissed at Hatcher herself.
Remember when Alec Baldwin went on Letterman and said on a whim that he'd probably get a Filipino mail order bride? Senator Bong Revilla said that he wouldn't allow him in the country. Baldwin apologized and they still wouldn't accept his apology.
A decade ago actress Claire Danes said Manila, "smelled of cockroaches and rats were everywhere. It's a horrible place." The corrupt President, Joseph Estrada, demanded an apology and said she will not be allowed in the country. Well, Danes gave numerous apologies but the government didn't accept them because they felt it wasn't sincere. They never put the statement into context when Danes was just speaking about the place they were shooting in Manila, which was one of the poorest districts of the city.
I'm sorry but I find your posts very distasteful. You act like it's only Filipinos who act this way. This stuff happens with every race. You really come off like you hate your heritage. I'm not even full Filipino or raised in the culture but I think you should quit generalizing like all Filipinos are the same and all think alike.
I don't understand. Pacquiao has never felt the almighty wrath of someone like Cotto. Cotto hits like a heavyweight and is going to knock Pacquiao out with a jab. And it's still an amazing win if he gets a decision not KO? Shouldn't he kill Pacquaio on impact?
Most of you sound like a bunch of repetitive little whiny girls. You should just find a previous post of some other little fanboy you agree with, copy, paste, and post because you all are saying the same things over and over again and they are basically a duplicate of what someone has already said way too many times. All i know is the more you talk someone down the dumber you look if they win. Why would you want to talk down your favorite fighter's opponent? What would that say about your favorite fighter if they were supposed to get a win and lose?
Do any of you guys really watch MMA? Even though it was an MMA event, Tim Sylvia is known as being just a powerful striker. He is like a big tree that can hit hard but isn't very technical. What the hell would Mercer have done if he was in with a wrestler or BJJ practitioner? He beat a guy who's only strength Mercer was better at.
If you watch the Pacquiao v DLH fight you see after the first round Oscar was discouraged and it only got worse the longer the fight went. He wasn't able to hit anything and everytime he threw he was receiving about four punches to the the face making him more tentative. I really feel that DLH underestimated Pac's power and skill. Really when the fight was made, the only advantage you could give to Pacquiao was his speed.
cuz it takes actual skill in boxing. it just goes to show you how much better boxing is than mma.
you will never see a journeyman with pink hair knock out one of the biggest stars in boxing.
a great boxer will always beat a great mma fighter in boxing
a great wrestler will always beat a great mma fighter in wrestling.
Does that mean that a great boxer or wrestler will always beat them in an MMA fight? No. And please do not use Sylvia and Mercer as an example. Sylvia came in as a fat ass, has terrible movement, and was worse technically with his best asset which was striking.
Simple: boxing has a far greater learning curve because it is a far more difficult sport. Not necessarily by its nature or essence, but simply there is far more competition due to having far more skilled opponents in boxing as compared to MMA. MMA is young and 90% of opponents are completely unskilled bums, whereas a large portion of boxers are "world class" and as such you need many more fights to prepare you for that big stage than you would in MMA where a guy that's 2-0 can just come in off the street (or off WWE for that matter) and win the world heavy weight championship. In boxing such a thing is impossible because boxing is a far more difficult sport to master than MMA in its current form.
I'm sorry but I don't agree. You can argue that both are equally as difficult. In boxing, you spend all of your training focusing on one aspect of fighting but in MMA you have to be skilled for anywhere the fight goes. That is why it is easier for someone in MMA to have a few wins and still become champion because there are multiple ways to win a fight besides boxing. While I don't like Lesnar, he had an amazing wrestling background and is a huge dude who actually has to cut to make the maximum weight for heavyweight. In MMA wrestlers normally do very well as they are able to control their opponents on the ground and it sure makes it easier when you're a silverback who outweighs your opponents by at least 20 pounds.
even upper teir fighters. its just how things go... you cant be great in more than one thing. either you are better at striking, ground attacks, wrestling, etc
but you cant be great at all. you can be good at all but not great.
i already see how much work some of these guys put in...GSP for instance. as said, dude is a beast... you know that
but whats his best trade of all the fighting styles he knows?
i feel andsee that there is more science involved in boxing than MMA. i always say it that Boxing is chess while MMA is checkers
im not impressed by KO'es, blood and shit. the brutality of MMA is why most people b/c fans of it...like watching a freak show. i rather watch a 12 round technically match thats chess/watching to people thinking their way through the match making adjustments and adapting than watch two people trade blows in a slugfest. that goes for boxing too...
I appreciate your response. I feel the same can go for boxing as well as in Pacquiao is a better offensive fighter and just had a truly brutal KO over Hatton. I know that I am speaking as a casual fan and cannot give all of the technicalities of either sport. I just enjoy both and don't see the need to really say one is better.
carano, frank mir, kimbo slice. mma is treading on water in terms of stars. they will never be as big & as culturally significant as boxing.
journeymen with pink hair & a last second replacement will never beat a boxing star.
2-0,5-0 boxers will almost always never beat a estbalished boxer let alone a superstar.
What pisses me off is how mma fans go to boxing sites & message boards & comment about how much mma is taking over & is better than boxing.
I have never done that. i dont know if boxing fans go to mma message boards & talk junk. just like you brah, you are obviously a mma fan, wtf are u doing in a boxing website?
I stated earlier that I enjoy both. I understand your point about Carano and Slice but they are not the fighters that I was referring to. I also never came on here saying MMA is better than boxing. My point is that not all of the guys in MMA are bums like the way it is painted on this site.
not a fan of MMA but GSP is a beast. eventhough you have to know more fighting forms with MMA that doesnt make it equal to boxings learning curve.
YOU can only be great in 1 thing technically...the other trades will fall short a bit.
MMA fighters careers are short for a reason...and their records arent nearly as long nor do fighters hold on to belts and titles for long periods of time
Boxing>MMA
One thing I dislike about most boxing fans on this site is that they tend to only look at the lower tier of fighters in MMA. So you are telling me that guys like GSP, Machida, Silva, and BJ Penn are not as techniclly skilled just in other aspects or all around? Again, they are not just fighting boxing, they have to be competitive everywhere. I think that's pretty difficult to "master" several completely different styles of fighting. I actually truly love watching both sports and think that some of you really do not realize that a lot of these guys put in just as much training, hard work, and dedication into what they do.
A boxer can spend an entire career focusing on four points of contact. His entire training will solidify in his mind and his body that there are four attacks possible. The points of contact consisting of his two hands and those of his opponent.
This knowledge allows for the boxer to focus in acute areas when considering both offense and defense. Obviously the whole body plays a role in boxing but the hands are the tip of the sword. His mind is conditioned to contemplate the defense and attacks based on those facts.
For a mixed martial artist the spectrum broadens considerably. Where only the hands are employed as weapons in boxing, in MMA there are eight points of contact. Two feet, two knees, two elbows, and two fists.
Multiply that by two and a fighter has eighteen things to consider before throwing a punch. That doesn’t take into consideration the ability to take one down, or complex aspect of submissions.
So where a boxer can focus in a broader spectrum and excel in that area, an MMA fighter must spread his mind thinner, as well as his body and also remain effective based on those aspects.
Those points are the very reason why the two can not be compared. Is it tomayto tomawto, or is it apples and oranges? The latter makes more sense.
- from Todd Jackson's most recent piece.
Excellent post!
So what was he supposed to do? Be quiet and take his robbery like a man? There's nothing wrong with what he said. The only people he disrespected were Golden Boy and Texas judges which I felt were appropriate.
What's hilarious is that a lot of you guys sit around here talking about how MMA is gay but yet you still like to make threads and talk about it all the time. Why bother with it if it's something you detest? Let me ask you a question. If I'm a straight man who thinks MMA is only two homos rolling around, what does that say about me if I go searching for MMA content?
