There is no way Floyd is walking around 160 something...I've seen this guy in person and he didnt look that heavy to me...I'm around 185 and he appeared to be 150-155 at the most....actually look smaller than that....
Definitely not underrated, maybe slightly overrated...maybe....the Berto fight was an impressive victory in some eyes but in the eyes of a techinal genius, it was a dodged bullet. Any technically, defensively sound fighter would have picked some of that wild punching apart by precise counter punching.
Before fighting Berto, we have to remember this guy's heart and desire was questionable...and he didnt look great against the more elite fighters. I think we are still high off the Fight of the Year and have forgotten his past.
I'm not doubting that this guy has a ton of power in both fists but his skill and heart are questionable at times. Despite being a pure puncher, the Mayweather fight might be biting off more than he can chew.
I'm not sure about this acid reflux relating to steroids....but lets be honest with ourselves, you don't start aging and all of a sudden become a freak of nature. Its very few boxers you see go from a good fighter to be mentioned in with the greatest of the sport.
Now that I think of it, there are athletes who surprisingly became freaks of nature...Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, Roger Clemens, Bill Romanoski....etc...lol....clearly these guys were eating more than just Popeye's spinach...
This is a point I tried to bring up on another thread. People don't realize this guy has not been fighting bums. He makes elite fighters into bums...then Manny goes and fights them and is praised for beating the same guys a couple of rounds faster....
I was impressed by Demetrius Andrade's fight on FNF but still see areas on concern. It was an impressive showing of pure boxing skills but I see holes that can be exploited by a brawler with a high work rate.
This guy reminds of a Paul Williams, with the long jab, using his length and distance as his defense at times. I'm concerned about how much he drops his hands while lunging. I understand he's young and still learning but if he gets matched against an opponent like an Omar Henry, that chin might get tested.
We'll all wait and see what he does, I really hope he's one of the elite in this weightclass.
Are we forgetting who we are talking about here?? We're talking about one of the most techincally sound boxers ever to lace up gloves against a tough but reckless at times, questionable hearted kid. The fight against Berto was definitely a Fight of The Year candidate but Ortiz showed no signs of intelligence in this fight. Yes, he showed a ton of heart and courage in that fight but it was Andre Berto he was fighting. Other than speed and power, Berto lacks the intangibles it takes to be one of the greatest fighters in boxing. Lets not forget, Luis Cullazo pretty much handed him a lost and Berto hasnt faced much opposition that could hold a match to Mayweather. I understand that styles make fights but that wild, throwing and lack of tact will get u knocked out or UD'd by the end of the night. Although Mayweather is 10 years this guy's senior, I still see him picking him apart and this becoming a technical schooling on September 17th. Keep in mind, Mayweather made JMM, one of the better boxers and counter punchers look like he was fresh out of the amatuers. Notice I said boxers. Lately, I see people have forgotten the science of boxing. Boxing is not standing in the ring throwing wild punches and standing waiting to get a punch in return, but it is simply the art of scoring on your opponent without getting hit in return. This is what Mayweather does everytime he goes out. I dont expect different for this fight. Ortiz gets quite reckless at times and I think Floyd will make him pay for the mistakes he makes in that square circle.
These people kill me...Floyd calls this man out and says he's ready to fight but now he's ducking...make up your mind...always contradiciton...
They say Floyd fights bums...Hatton, DLH, Mosley, Marquez...Pacquiao goes and fights them and he all of a sudden is a superhero...
They say Floyd only fights old fighters outside of their prime...He beats Ortiz, oh Ortiz wasnt ready and was outclassed...
They say Floyd makes up the excuse for steriods...Pac says he's afraid of needles, cutoff time wrong, they dont agree on the split, Now Arum says venue/date wrong.
No matter what he does, their will still be complaints...when he does beat Pac...they'll say "Oh, he got Pac when he was two or three years older and on the decline" GTFOH
How do u put a video on a thread that contradicts your point? This was clearly a round for Floyd. This is sad that a person has to record a video of one round of Floyd's 42 win career to try to hate. This guy is one of the best we've seen...lets just face it...
Which 4th round are u watching? I think Floyd connected about 3x more than Ortiz...Yes, Ortiz connected some subpar shots on Floyd against the ropes with those two little flurries but they did no damage...Floyd kept scoring on this guy...go head...count the points...Those two combinations are enough to win a round, especially if none of those shots are punishing...that was an easy round to score...notice the jab and right hands connecting.....
I can't even believe we're having this debate. Its obvious that this guy cheated in the Cotto fight. If he hadnt cheated before then what makes Shane Mosley that dangerous to have plaster in your gloves for the fight against him? The beating that Cotto took was unbelievable...he definitely cuts easily at times but he way her bled against Margarito(out of his ears and bloody tears) was ridiculous.
I dont know how its so easy ignore the truth on this board but there is no way a boxer can have plaster in their gloves and know nothing about it. Especially when you're sitting there watching the wraps being placed. I hope Cotto can finish this dude this time. Already too much cheating going on in boxing(Pac)
I would definitely say he is up there, I could see how JMM could be said to be better...the major difference with these fighters is the defense, counter punching and combination punching..
Floyd is definitely the most superior defensive fighter out there...I would say JMM using counter punching in combinations makes him stand out a little more....its very rare you will see Floyd counter with a barrage of punches...
I respect both guys for this fight and it should be good...I think it could be good because Floyd hasnt faced a boxer that does such work on the body...and Floyd is taking the fight at 154...unlike Pac did at 147, when the guy is drained...
I think this will probably be the most skillful boxer that Cotto has faced and we will see if his will can be broken or if he's mentally tough to deal with Floyd's elusiveness...besides the Pac fight, this is the best fight for Floyd. Of course, the Floyd haters will say this Pac's leftovers but Cotto at 154 is a different fighter.
I expect Floyd to win by UD or a late TKO after frustrating Cotto...but lets keep in mind, Cotto does incredible body work and does have a puncher's chance. He does have the weight/power advantage...
Lets be honest, any fight Mayweather takes, he'll most likely win...at the same time, any fight he takes, he will be said to be "ducking" someone else...this guy cant fight EVERYBODY. If he beats Cotto, and is ready for Pac....he ducked Martinez.
If he fights Martinez, then he's ducking Pac. This guy will never get his credit for taking on the best challengers. Even after he beats Cotto, ohhhh its too late...this fight is overdue...
Lets be clear, there is no fighter skilled enough to put a gameplan together to beat this guy. The only way to beat May is the puncher's chance. I agree with all of those who said he is far more skilled. He has the science down too well..I think Cotto has a better chance than Pac does. Way more skilled...even though he lost to him...styles make fights...Standing and throwing punches and being off balance like Pacquiao will get u picked apart by Mayweather. If Cotto had better defense, counter punching, and stamina...he could have won that fight..
Ok...this guy is getting to the point where he is just talking without thinking first..How do u go from saying this is a guy you would want to get to if you were never impressed by him? This is the same guy you ran up to as a fan to congratulate after the Mosley fight.
If you also look at this guy's "greats" list...I see Judah, Oscar, Shane Mosley...didnt Floyd beat all of these guys??? But he's just good compared to them?? Haha...this guy is a dummy and I lose more respect for him everytime he talks..Sounds like fear speaking in all these interviews
Althought I am a fan of FMJ, I am not a fan of disrespecting your father especially on national television. No matter what a parent has done, right or wrong, there should always be a level a respect you have for them. This really made me sad watching this because this is becoming a problem in not just the Mayweather family, but all over.
I hope they resolve their issues within their family. No matter how much fortune, fame, and wins he gets from his career in boxing. He still is Floyd Mayweather Jr. Meaning, that is the man who brought him in this world. If there was something to happen to his father today, he will regret this moment and regret even more that the world witnessed this...
I think Floyd haters are right. Floyd does cherrypick his fights. Floyd always fights his opponents after an impressive win. Floyd doesnt wait until another WW beats the hell out of a guy and then go fight him. He knows after they come off an impressive victory, the money will be flowing when he signs up to fight them.
As far as Ortiz goes, besides this Berto fight, I dont recall him having that great of a career. I can remember it was a time not too long ago when we were writing this boxer off, now all of a sudden he's question the legacy of FMJ. Funny. Very funny.
This fight will be a lesson. Floyd will show this young fighter how to box and not brawl. No Floyd is not the hardest puncher, not the most active, nor is always down to engage in war. But, if you love the sweet science of boxing...meaning to score on an opponent without getting hit much, Compubox stats are record setting, and making a champion looking like a chump while swinging at air, you should know what ur about to see in this fight. Ortiz has subpar skills and that defense is easy to penetrate.
