Because he used nothing but technique and skills last night. Same physical abilites as always, he was just fine tuned and perfectly prepared by Roach and the team.
I'd say MOSTLY technique and skills, but his power was on point. Cotto's always been a good puncher, he's just gotten away from that style the last few years before Freddie brought it back out of him. Both Freddie and Gavin (his conditioning coach) are a formidable 1-2 punch when it comes to making Cotto's strengths shine. Gavin also stated on record sometime before/after I think Pacman vs. Rios or Ruslan vs. Alvarado that he refuses to work with athletes who are on PEDs.
I was always of the belief that Andre Berto should have been training with Floyd Sr. years ago. A guy as fast as him with decent pop who needed help with his defense should have seen the answer right in front of him. Berto and Sr would have been money.
Not sure where Berto's at right now, I know he's training to make a comeback but I doubt he'll rise to the same level he was seemingly rising to a few years ago.
I swear I hate being a sports fan in today's day and age sometimes. As soon as an athlete does something spectacular there's immediate accusations of PED's.
It's amazing what proper training and focus towards executing a gameplan can do for a fighter. Haters gonna hate.
Cotto's prior workouts throughout the years always struck me as a bit of lazy. Seemed to laid back during mitt work and even jump rope and speed bag.
The fact that he probably now doesn't have to worry about weight at all and can just workout and eat and still be on weight is beneficial to him at this stage of life. Add to it the fact that Roach is famous for putting his fighters through more intense workouts/drills, Cotto has a new life in Boxing.
Now he can have AB's and still weight 160, whereas before he would have to shrink and be dehydrated just to see a little bit of 6-pack action showing through.
Freddie's the guy who has really brought back Cotto's intensity and attack while polishing up the flaws we've seen over the years on top of it. Also, Gavin MacMillan who works with Freddie as the S&C coach for Cotto and Provodnikov, brings some unique training methods to the table. Short video below.
I'm with you man. Look, I know Martinez looked like utter crap but I've never, ever seen coot look like that. He looked like a PR version of Mayweather last night. He hurt a man 15 pounds heavier (just guessing at the weight) with nearly every punch, didn't appear to fade at all, was pinpoint with every single shot he threw and was miles faster than I have ever seen him before. The dude looked like a machine.
The people at my house were also wondering what was up with his amazing transformation. His trainer did work with GSP and that dude doesn't exactly look like he is a stranger to roids but I'll still give them the benefit of the doubt. I'll just say that was the best version of Cotto I have ever seen and I feel that the version of Cotto from last night would and should be favored against virtually anyone from 147-160
Found a snippet from an article that was published around the time of the Delvin Rodriguez fight, when Cotto first worked with Roach and S&C coach Gavin MacMillan. If you google "Cotto's strength coach MacMillan" it's the first link that shows up.
MacMillan said he is grateful for the fact that both Provodnikov and St. Pierre have enrolled in the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) for a few reasons. The stigma in boxing, unfairly, is that strength coaches are the one who bring performance enhancing drugs to the gym. Having his fighters willingly entering into arguably the world’s most stringent drug testing protocol, is not only a ringing endorsement of his work’s cleanliness but also gives him a screening process for clients. MacMillan will not work with anyone using or looking to us PEDs.
“Well yeah, it is for a lot of reasons. Because for number one if guys are taking this stuff I won’t work with them,” said MacMillan. “Anybody that knows me knows that. I don’t want anything to do with it. There’s too many of the trainers that are in boxing or are in MMA that are pushing . I don;t know what the percentage is but its really high. And most of the aren’t testing for HGH so that goes unaccounted for. And now that they’ve legalized if your testosterone falls below a certain level they are making it legal to take it by prescription, it makes it an even tougher issue.”
The accusations of PED use are frustrating accusation for St. Pierre and MacMillan, prompting GSP to undergo testing with VADA to clear the air once and for all.
The co-feature's going to be Ortiz-Campbell as well, that's a pretty great night of 140 pound action on WCB, if you ask me.
An hour long countdown featuring both fights and all fighters would probably be a good idea.
The fight can still make record breaking amounts of money, even now. Should it have happened back in March of 2010 like it was supposed to? Absolutely. However, there's no use in reminiscing over opportunities lost.
Both men have been the issue in negotiations; Mayweather wanted more money, Pacquiao was afraid of needles, etc. They're BOTH at fault and they've both been the reason negotiations fell through. Bottom line is that neither of them need each other for financial stability, whether Manny has tax issues or not. Don't forget that before the fight with Marquez, Floyd had a lot of speculation going around that he owed the IRS a LOT of money.
If Pacquiao beats Marquez or Bradley next, and Floyd ends up beating Khan (his likely opponent) then why wouldn't the two of them link up? Unless Floyd fought someone else next September (but who?) and Pacquiao redeemed himself against Bradley. That's best case scenario though.
Broner should have been trained by Big Floyd for a while now, I feel. The guy tries to do the shoulder roll (badly) and doesn't counter punch off it at all. Floyd Sr. could easily make him a better fighter who doesn't have to decide whether to punch or defend, but do both simultaneously.
I've always been a fan of Floyd Sr's training style, but that's just me. I know it doesn't work for everyone, obviously, but a guy like Broner could seriously benefit from baving Floyd Sr. in his corner. I made a thread years back about Berto, saying he should have hired Floyd Sr. as well, but we obviously know now that didn't pan out.
It would be an interesting fight to the public IF Maidana gets another win under his belt. He'd have to beat someone like Bradley to really set himself up for a Mayweather payday, though. Beating Broner isn't enough, although it adds to the build up since Floyd and Broner are so close.
For me it's this..
Same here. Those three fights between Izzy and Rafa were incredible. I suppose since they had a fourth it doesn't count as a trilogy, but still.
Pot... kettle... black
Sure Froch didn't give any of his opponents bar Kessler respect, especially when he was going after Calzaghe.
Haha, the first thing I thought of was Calzaghe, too.
I've grown to be a Froch fan, if for nothing else because he is one of few guys who truly believes EVERY word he says. He's never been shook by the bright lights of big fights and has never "broken". He gives 100% every time he steps in the ring and finds a way to win almost always.
WAR FROCH :boxing:
I feel like Floyd is 99.9% sure he's going to be fighting Garcia next, so with that said I see it going like this:
1. Garcia (Floyd UD, as usual)
2. Bradley/Marquez (if it's Marquez he'll need another fight after Bradley to sell the fact he's more formidable than when Floyd schooled him in '09)
3. Pacquiao (doesn't matter if Manny's on a bit of a downward slope, all he needs is one vicious KO win over someone like Rios to make the public recognize again)
4. Martinez (though he's getting older, Floyd closing his career for the MW title seems appropriate. The age of Martinez wouldn't be a factor in selling the fight so long as he keeps winning because Floyd is getting up there, too.)

There's a couple of ptotos but they don't exactly show much haha. They're from the twitter account of his S&C coach, Gavin MacMillan, who runs Sport Science Lab out in California.
Gavin is the new conditioning coach for the Wild Card, and works closely with Provodnikov and Shiming, and now is working with Cotto. He's legit, and a completely different type of trainer/personality compared to Ariza.
If this is true, I hope Jeff makes a speedy and full recovery. Jeff's all class, I actually met him in Vegas back in '09 and he invited me to the gym to train with him. Such a humble guy, it'd be a damn shame if this is true.
Saw some pics of him training in the water
That's probably him doing work with Gavin. I actually have the Aqua-Kinetic workout DVD from SSL, which is likely what Cotto is doing here, it's no joke.
i dont know who i disliked more during their times: Norman Stone or Rock Newman
That's a match-up for the ages! If I had to pick two standout quotes from both guys, they'd have to be:
"FIGHT THIS ****IN GUY! FIGHT HIM!" - Stoney to Ruiz during his bout with RJJ.
"He got his ass thoroughly smashed!" - Newman talking about Fan Man and Bowe's entourage who beat him up. Once can only imagine he was nowhere near the scuffle.
I'm looking forward to seeing 24/7 this weekend to hopefully get more footage of Cotto's S&C training. His coach, who also works with Providnikov and a number of Freddie's other fighters, is top notch and brings a very different approach to training.
Here's a short video that was uploaded during his camp for Rodriguez:
If only this thread could reach the rest of the world...actually, that probably wouldn't matter since the people who have been critical of/hate Floyd aren't going to be swayed by one example like this. Probably point to the fact that Victor was even younger and more inexperienced in this video, and that Floyd should have known better.
*shrugs*
Earner, who posts here and works for Everlast, told us that the new MX glove Everlast made is specifically meant for punchers, and that in the process of establishing the glove in the boxing world, it's stolen a lot of loyal Reyes guys from that brand. Earner also said that another big name Reyes guy is switching soon, I think.
They custom made the gloves for Cotto and he loved them, they had his Cotto logo with the wings, a bible verse and "54/10" to honor his late father. Not sure if Cotto will stay with the Everlast brand, but it seems as though he might.
Cotto against any of the names mentioned in this thread would be interesting, if you ask me. Cotto-Angulo would be nice, Cotto-Cintron in a match-up of Puerto Rican boxers, one of whom used to be trained by Steward, Cotto-Williams would just be a very good fight if you ask me.
I'd love to see Miguel against any of the aforementioned names.
Lol yeah I laughed a bit too, but hey, Manny's a dope guy to have in your corner, he'll even speak your native tongue to keep you satisfied and feeling confident :boxing:
