basicly the deal was 50/50 except the german tv money is not on the table
haye asked for the german money to be included in the pot the klits refused
haye then countered with a 50/50 deal minus german and uk tv money the klits also refused
Its not a horrendous offer with the Germany money off the table, but I can see why Haye would refuse. He's got a belt, he thinks that each of them want him as much as he wants them. He's standing in the way of a Klit unification of the belt (between the two of them). He offered them two fair straight down the middle offers and they offer him one slanted offer. I can see why he refused, and I can see why he should've accepted. Similarly, I can see why they should've accepted, and why they refused.
Only one person has really been vilified for it all on this forum and that's David Haye. Just like Pac vs Mayweather. They are both to blame and neither of them are blameless.
Lewis' style was boring (like the Klits), but his attitude towards fighting wasnt. He used to eat punches and he used to go toe-to-toe. Entertainment wise, the Klits dont compare.
Yes, his power is overrated in the same way Shavers's and Foreman's power is overrated.
With the latter two it's the numerous testimonies of their various opponents who prop up their reputation, with Vitali it's his knockout ratio. In all cases they simplify and hide the truth. Most of the fighters who wax lyrical about Shavers's devastating power not only survived it, but won the fight against him. Similarly, many of the "KOs" on Vitali's resume were either standing ref stoppages or corner quittages, perfectly legitimate ways of winning a fight before the final bell sounds of course, but not exactly indicative of stunning one-hit knockout power.
Vitali's punches are thudding and damaging, but it's the sort of power that many fighters can take, for a while at least. Compare them to a prime Tua for example and you'll see an immediate difference in punching power. Vitali relies on his height, workrate and awkwardness to constantly land hard punches throughout the course of a fight, punches which eventually take their toll resulting in a stoppage one way or another. Tua on the other hand has continually been on the losing end of fights heading into the later rounds, hardly having landed a punch on his opponent when suddenly he pulls something out of the blue and leaves the opponent dribbling on the floor. In the words of Thulsa Doom, "Now that's power, boy."
As for whether Vitali used to punch harder in the past than now, yeah possibly, though he never really had the sort of punch that made me sit up and go "Woah!" He failed to knock Sanders out despite landing a sickening number of punches flush to Sanders's face. Rahman knocked him down with one punch. And aside from the 2nd round he never seriously hurt Lewis with anything he landed. Again, I bring up Rahman and raise you a McCall. Since his comeback he's certainly not impressed me with his power, at any rate. Not that it matters really. He still packs enough of a wallop in his fists to allow him to impose his gameplan and force his opponents into a shell upon which he can punch with impunity. Which sooner or later will get him the win.
By the way, yes Lewis had a considerably better jaw than many people thought. I use past tense because it seems that allegations of his "glass jaw" are gradually being eroded as time passes and people evaluate his fights more carefully. You'll still hear it from time to time, mainly from ignorant fools who think Dempsey would have KOed him, but their pathetic babblings can quite easily be hushed with this fine video:
Joke is, at the time everyone used to claim that Lewis was a boring fighter. He looks like Ali compared to the Klit brothers when it comes to entertainment.
He was offered a fight by Dawson at 175 on HBO, he should not have turned it down. If he had lost to Dawson at 175 he would return to 168 as still king like Hatton
I'd agree with that actually. Afterall, the loss to Calzaghe hasnt done him any harm in terms of credibility. Quite the opposite actually. Unfortunately it has now marked him out as a high risk, low reward fighter.
Floyd taking the piss instead of answering a question he's obviously sick of being asked was funny, reporters need to get the hint.
However, Floyd always has and always will be inherently poor at doing this kind of thing. He's a good talker when he's discussing boxing technique, an incredibly interesting person to listen to. When he's in his 'Money Mayweather persona' he seems hugely like a wannabe.
Wlad is more than a slight favourite, he's a heavy favourite. Haye is one of the few fighters around who would have a genuine chance outside of a lucky punch though (EVERYONE has a chance against Wlad with a lucky punch).
No, it depends completely how the fight plays out. I don't particularly like Hatton and I don't think he has enough in his tank to cope with a Pacquaio right now. But if he wins, I'll give him credit.
I don't give Calzaghe credit for thr RJJ fight considering how it played out - RJJ was plainly shot to pieces.
Wait for the fight and see how it plays out, befoe trying to pre-empt excuses from the other side.
Presumably you didnt give Pac and credit for beating DLH then?
this means all the ppl here who picked Jones to win back then know nothing about boxing either? Please.
Quite a few. Many of the others are just a case of people picking with their hearts instead of their heads.
5 knockdowns and a knockout against a decent contender is impressive. It has to be.
Would you have required him to punch him to death within 5 seconds in order to be impressed?
Dawson is the one with the better tools to do the job. Calzaghe figured out Hopkins quick enough last time, another fight would just be more decisive. Pavlik hasnt got the skills to beat Calzaghe without a lot of luck, Taylor wouldnt last the pace. Dawson wouldnt win either, he's too inexperienced to go in against someone like Calzaghe. But Chad would have the best chance.
Because he decided to take his time and get a bit of heavyweight time in the ring instead of rattling him with punches at risk of burning himself out against a decent heavyweight contender...he looks 'utter shit'?
Its not really his fault that Monte kept getting back up.
Come on now. I'm a big Haye fan, but he still is a hype job at the moment. He's relatively untested at heavyweight, he came through his first test with flying colours but some negatives. If you're a Haye fan, you really dont want him fighting either of the Klits until he gets another two or three fights under his belt.
You're expcetation levels are too high. Past his best or not Barrett is a solid professional who is still a gatekeeper to bigger things in that division. Knocking him down 5 times on route to a 5 round knockout is a good performance for your first real step up to heavyweight. Could've took him out sooner, ref could've stopped it sooner, but Haye was being cautious and looking for the big finish. Barrett went down at least once to avoid a bigger punch that could've stopped it coming behind. You're being silly if you think thats completely unimpressive.
post a vid of prime calzaghe plz
No such thing. When he was young he was strong, fast and awkward, but stupid. Now he's older he's lost his power, kept his speed and work-rate and become a much smarter yet still incredibly awkward fighter. The prime Calzaghe realistically is a combination of old and new.
As for the fight? Its impossible to say as Calzaghe never fought Roy Jones from 1993. All we can say with 100% certainty is that when they did fight, Calzaghe won.
Nobody who truly knows boxing would predict that Roy Jones would knock Calzaghe out early. Calzaghe has NEVER been knocked out, never been seriously hurt, never looked like getting stopped. All of Jones' best victories have come in points decisions or late stoppages. He's beaten a few decent contenders early. But he's never taken anyone anywhere near Calzaghe's league out early. The closest is Clinton Woods in 6 rounds and frankly if anyone thinks that Clinton is in the same league as Calzaghe, they've got a lot to learn.
there's where the jones power changes things, calzaghe was properly hurt(by jones wrist mind you), it was'nt a flash knockdown he stumbled up, prime jones would've landed that plenty, and it would land flush
he did that move alot but from a distance in his prime, watch the james toney fight, and we all know calzaghe does'nt have a james toney defense
Calzaghe has been hit by more powerful punchers than Jones before.
I am not saying that he would win, but the assumptions that Prime Roy Jones would take someone of Calzaghe's ability out so quickly simply doesnt ring true with what the record book suggests.
Oh really? Proof please.
Also who would want to travel to Sheep****ville anyway?
You show me Taylor's PPV numbers against Lacy and I'll try my best to get hold of Joe's against Jones.
92-94 RJJ went 10 rounds with the mighty Jorge Fernando Castro, 8 rounds with the awesome Glenn Thomas, 6 rounds with the phenomenal Thulani Malinga, 10 with the superhuman Fermin Chirino (who both Steve Collins and Nigel Benn had knocked out well inside the distance) and 6 with the myth, the legend that is Danny Garcia.
Are we to believe that he would beat Calzaghe faster than he beat all of these guys?
Have a word.
For someone who has no defences, Calzaghe has done pretty well in his career so far. Down 4 times, for less than 10 seconds combined, only ever cut once or twice. Barely lost more than few rounds a fight in his career. If he had such a shitty defence, someone would've exploited it by now.
have you seen him get dropped?, and how much he gets hit?, he's just a tough bastard
He would be just as much of a tough bastard against Jones. He wouldnt suddenly fall apart.
Taylor doesnt want Calzaghe.
Joe is a bigger champion, gets bigger crowds, bigger PPV numbers, has a better record, is a bigger name and makes more money and yet the first thing that Taylor says is that he expects Calzaghe to come to him, because he wont be going to Wales. Compare that to Kessler, Dawson, Johnson and Hopkins, all of which have recognised that Calzaghe has the power at the moment and that they'd be willing to travel to them and you'll realise that what Taylor is saying is effectively "No thanks".
