Prenga hit the lottery. If he can finish the fight standing and be competitive he will get a few years of really good money fights. Gotta finish though, can't get KO'd.
Usyk vs Kabayel is probably the best heavyweight fight to be made currently. Kabayel is the most deserving of the potential options. It would be the most interesting matchup by far. :boxing:
Wilder only box those below Top 35 unless or until he shows he actually can "pull the trigger" as in years past. It's dangerous otherwise, almost defenseless. I'm always and hoping he doesn't get seriously hurt. Chisora seems to still be aggressive and able to pull the trigger.
Usyk vs Kabayel would be an excellent fight, but Usyk may not want the risk at this point. Fury, Dubois maybe could beat Kabayel. I don't see anyone else up to the challenge right now. Okolie needs a big fight first. Hrgovic, Bakole, Zhang. Unless Kabayel wants a stay-busy fight (again) he can only move up by beating Usyk, Dubois, or Wardley. A big win over Bakole or Ituama wouldn't hurt either.
First, Canelo won't fight any champion-level black fighters unless he can have a significant weight (bully) advantage in the fight. He may one day fight Charlo or Andrade, but only with some type of catch-weight whereby he can significantly outweigh them (ala Mayweather, Lara, Cotto fights). There is one scenario where he may give up the weight advantage ... if the black fighter is clearly aging out and diminishing (as Kovalev (not black) was).
Second, there really aren't many champ-level black fighters in Canelo's path at the moment. Fighting at Super-Middle, he can brush off most black fighters in that division as "bringing nothing to the table", unknown, lacking star power, fan-demand, etc. Not a lot of distinguished black fighters at Super-Middle at the moment.
The only black boxer that can merit a Canelo fight right now is Pascal. But Canelo will not go back up to Light-heavy for that fight unless Pascal shows some serious drop-off in skills ... which he hasn't at the moment. Even though Kovalev beat Pascal twice, and Canelo "beat" some version of a Kovalev, Canelo will not go near Pascal at this time.
By the way, a Pascal fight could be a fight of the year right about now, given what Pascal has shown in his last few fights. But, no way Canelo brings up Pascal's name right now. He's been too dangerous lately. I don't think Nelo could figure out a way to "weight-bully" Pascal. Of course if Canelo really wanted to be great, that fight should be being set up right now (before Pascal ages out)!
So, there really aren't any black fighters of star power in Canelo's path at the moment. Charlo would be moving up to Supper-Middle with no fights there. He would get weight-bullied. It may still be a good fight, but a fair fight? Andrade is almost in the same position. Besides, Andrade has no big fights ... it's hard for anyone to really have a clue how he will respond to a Megafight.
It's an unfortunate statement from Crawford in any case, very ill-advised and disappointing.
How does Khan get $5 million though? From Top Rank?
That said, I guess it was never an offer anyway. In cases where the other guy is perceived as th A-side, the B-Side in a big fight should always counter for whatever amount they are offering OR 65% of the A-side purse .... whichever is greater.
Monzon fought 13 consecutive years without losing a fight.
He fought 99 times and only lost three of those fights.
I’m not sure how you came to the conclusion that anyone would outclass him lol.
This. Spot on.
I think Lopez and Kambosos may be making a correct assumption about this fight also. Australia always supports their local fighters in a big way. Even without a crowded stadium there will probably be big TV revenue for showing this fight. Kambosos is a local boy!
Also, Teofimo is huge worldwide after winning the Lomachenko fight. He will generate a lot of eyes on any medium (pay or free). Australia will be honored and curious to have him as part of a local affair. He may never fight there again.
I think the fighters are right that there is gonna be a lot more revenue generated than the offers Top Rank has made indicate. This will be a very interesting purse bid ... seeing what other promoters think the fight wll generate.
That's a bad cut. Very surprised they didnt stop it. I'd like to hear what the ringside doc was thinking.
Hope he recovers from that. Everything about that cut is kinda mysterious.
Lipinets has looked much better as a WW than before. Ennis looks very good. Not a ton of pro experience yet though. Has the makings of a very good fight due to where each is right now and their respective past vs potential.
I'm not ready to call it, but will love seeing it. Hopefully by then I'll have a pick. :boxing::boxing:
1.25 mil is more than generous to fight freakin' Kambosis. All the money in the marketplace over the past three years has these guys confused.
Lopez is demanding Arum go into the red and lose money here.
There is no demand on Arum because it goes to a purse bid. A case can be made that Arum should be happy if the purse bid generates more money for his fighter (at someone else's expense). If you can't afford it or don't wanna pay a market attainable price to promote it ... why would you be salty if someone else pulls it off.
Because his fighter is involved, Arum will be privy to every detail of how the promotion gets managed. Thus, if it is successful, he gets a list of new strategies to make these fights. That's a win-win (if you leave your ego out of it).
Wilder only has power to bail him out. If he didn’t have it, I doubt he has the skills to box Brezeale for 12 rds.
Wilder with lucky punch > Wallin
Wallin > Wilder without lucky punch
After knocking that many people out (with no other skill as you say), it doesn't make sense to call it a "lucky" punch now does it?
Exactly right guys. It's not easy to back Wilder up. Ortiz somewhat managed to do it but got KO'd ... and despite haters nonsense, Ortiz is a good boxer (not sure how age will matter in his fights going forward though).
Some nights Wilder is preoccupied with big punches and doesn't wanna work. Other nights (or opponents) he is ok to be patient, look for the right moments with the big punches. Like many boxers his focus and concentration sometimes is not there ... matters much.
Boxing history is littered with many making over-simplifications and bad assumptions ...
The promoter should always do their best for fighters they promote no matter what. They should not use their power as promoter to get even with a boxer they promote. If they do that then that boxer should try to leave that promoter and other boxers should not trust that promoter or sign with him. It seems like more boxers try to leave Arum than any other promoter.
No matter what that contract fine print says, I believe a court will have a problem with a promoter openly taking retaliation on a fighter they represent (my opinion). Given that Bob has publicly put that out there, I think this helps Teofimo. If Bob carries that threat out I would bet that a court will allow Lopez out of his contract.
The PBC card wasn't an all-time classic for sure. But the Dirrell/Davis fight was interesting. I openly wondered before the fight if Dirrell was doing a cashout tour. However, he fought hard and with passion being 36 yrs. old. I think we may have saw the beginning of a star in Kyrone Davis at 26, in his first fight at 168. This fight may tell us more when we look back on it in a few years. Given these guys ages and point in their respective careers, this fight had passion, was well fought by both, ebbed and flowed, and showed flashes of the greatness in both fighters. Depending on where Kyrone goes from here, this fight tells a lot. It was a respectable note on a decent career by Dirrell, who still fought with skill and fire at 36.
Every NFL or NBA game that is shown on TV isn't memorable, so neither will every boxing match. For true fans though, there will be glimpses of things that become important later ... in terms of understanding and evaluating fighters, their tendencies, and worthiness in contests against others. Invaluable stuff for real fans.
We live in a time now where every event is measured against the best similar events of all time ... and it's just not fair. The attention span and interest level of people now is only affected if they believe they are watching a historic affair. Says a lot about the people watching. History is always built on small pieces that most overlook. Only on analyses later on, are the components of history understood by many. These fights (that are being knocked) are pieces of the history to come.
Talented, big HW's can get ANYONE out of there with "just the right shot" ... that is not an exclusive possibility to Wilder (remember Ruiz stopping AJ). I agree though that there is enough size and talent now at HW where it could happen to Wilder.
The point about Wilder's injuries over the years is spot on. If Fury refuses to honor fight III, I think Wilder would do well to remain active in the gym with perhaps one fight over the next year ... allowing the many nagging injuries to heal. Also allowing time to solidify his weight nearer 240 lbs., and doing much more 'attack strategy' and 'defensive' training when hurt during a fight.
If he does that, I think Wilder easily positions himself for a serious run at regaining the title (no matter who the top guys are). The punch will stay lethal until it isn't, and Wilder has a lot of 'Dog' in him. Definitely can continue having outstanding fights ... where a legendary punch or turn of events are always lurking around a corner. Boxing suspense and drama at it's best.
-162 is not a big favorite. Anything under 2:1 is pretty damn close odds. But what surprises me is that Davis is less of an underdog against Lomachenko than the man that actually beat him, and someone who is a HUGE LW.
The odds don't make sense here. If they rematch, it should be even odds or Lopez the slight favorite. I mean Lopez was pretty damn green with limited fights and really no top opponent and was still able to win. Is he all of a sudden going to get worse? That performance likely takes his game to another level.
Agreed. Across the board. Kinda scary where Teofimo may go from here ...
Until it's proven, I think Loma beats all the other guys (Tank, Garcia, Haney). It remains to be seen if Teofimo could repeat his win, but for now. he has the only shot at beating Loma as of now (my opinion).
I'd love to see these fights happen! :boxing:
I get you take him into the later rounds to test his stamina but you need to throw punches to do that. It's like he put himself in the position of needing a KO to win. That doesn't seem like a sound strategy
I agree on the size thing.
I think Loma got Lopez into the later rounds ok (I wouldn't have started as slow as he did, but ...). The fight (in my eyes) was won in the 12th round. Loma had Lopez dazed, hurt, and in trouble for moments during rounds 8 - 11. But Teofimo kept rising to the occasion, managing to land shots to slow Loma's roll.
It added up to an even fight heading into the 12th (my opinion). Lopez met the challenge and outgunned and outlasted Loma in the 12th. Ballgame!
A rematch could definitely go either way, but much respect to Teofimo ... as the young challenger, he kept his composure in tough moments, stayed creative and focused on fighting his fight, and overall met every challenge that tough, crafty, and dangerous Loma threw at him, rounds 7 - 12. If Lopez had faltered or got gun-shy, Loma would have won the fight .... even with a very slow start in the early rounds.
Just a word on that. When Loma did decide to step forward to Teo's power shots (that were controlling the fight) he showed how impressive a boxer and fighter he is. Loma did some amazing things getting his attack untracked. Lopez never really slacked up to give Loma room ... Loma just crafted a way to suddenly start being very effective and dangerous. Fantastic fight!
speak for yourself
whyte vs wilder, ortiz, ruiz, tyson fury, dubois..are fights im hoping get made someday.
Me too ... and any real Boxing fan would want to see them. Same for Wilder vs many in the division.
That was a great fight ... even with Loma's slow start. Kudos to Teofimo Lopez, lots of skills, serious heart, and he dug deep at the end. I think Loma wanted Lopez to tire (he did from 9 - 11), and Loma was being careful of that power in the early rounds. He probably had some ring rust too having been out so long.
He won the war from 8 - 11, but lost the 12th in one of the best 12th rounds in a long time. I had Lopez winning because he turned the tide during the 12th round war.
It would be a better fight in a rematch. I'd probably pick Loma to win but wouldn't be surprised at all if Lopez repeated. Lopez will definitely grow from that fight ... having been somewhat exposed in those later rounds. I'm sure he and his team are working to shore up some defense and offense because of those rounds.
Rematch will be a classic if held in the next 18 months.
Its because he knows AJ couldn't drain him down to bones and push a rehydration clause on him lol
LoL, you win the internet! Funny and a shame at the same time ... p4p dude "contracts" nearly everyone into a serious disadvantage before a fight. Casual fans supply the money to make it so ...
Crawford should sue to be released freom his contract. When your promoter is publicly claiming to not be able to finance your fights successfully ... seems like that would be easy work for a court to free the fighter from the contract. I do believe there is even precedence for that.
Also, Top Rank could pursue a pursue bid approach and allow any promoter who wants to see if they can successfully promote a fight (and work through the monetary demands) the opportunity. They will still get a fee (instead of losing a mansion's worht of money), and the fighter can remain active and competitive.
If they really felt they couldn't promote Crawford per his money demands they should just release him.
I think plenty of greats lost to guys who couldn't hold their jock during their prime. And hell to me that Tim L shouldn't have been an L to begin with. The Horn loss was a near mugging in Australia & I thought Manny eeked that one out myself, but wouldn't argue with the decision cuz it was tight enough to go either way.
Agreed on all points. The Op is speaking as though he didn't actually see the fights and talking only from the very debatable "official outcomes".
However anyone feels about it, Paq is definitely HOF.
You've all said he isn't great, he's backtracked on statements and now without a title he's an expensive undercard fighter or an ESPN Wednesday Night fighter so why if I'm running a business should I be excited about Deontay Wilder.
You dont understand the allure of big men facing off, nor the money to be made from it. I hope your business is a dry cleaners.
HW Boxing is the best because any of these trained big guys can deliver a punch at "the right moment", and change everything in the division. Wilder is as dangerous as any current boxer. It will be interesting to see what version of him comes out going forward ... against any and all of those opponents.
Real HW fans understand, anyone can be beaten in this division. Ali understood it ... and all the other greats. The great ones battle back and leave their legacy. It's all up to Wilder from here forward. :boxing:
Why should he have to?
Not to mention that if he does, it still doesn't guarantee him the Spence fight. You don't think that he'd have to fight Porter, Garcia and Thurman to marinate the fight?
He'd probably have to fight One of them. He needs to fight one of them anyway.
