I like the fight and respect Donaire for his willingness to take it. He's a warrior and doesn't have much else to prove right now. He's accomplished a good bit, but this would definitely add a feather to his cap. Imagine the savvy veteran defeating a pound for pound monster in his heyday. Man, that would be impressive.
Benavidez should jump ship or have his people not take this fight. Knowing Benavidez though he'll accept if the offer is made. I remember reading not that long ago that one of his people said he'd like for Benavidez to get more experience under his belt before taking the Crawford fight. 2-3 fights before stepping up would help him imo. But if it were to happen Benavidez is no pushover. He was sparring Pacquiao back in 08 when he was at his prime and Benavidez was only about 16 I believe. We'll see what happens but I would like to see Benavidez get a couple more fights at least before taking on Crawford.
YAWN... Stevenson's been holding the belt hostage since he's won it. Thankfully for him but unfortunately for us fans Kovalev took a big loss so that kills any plans for a monster fight at light heavyweight. Who knows if he'll be willing to fight Alvarez and Bivol.
Max Kellerman said it best: as long as people are still willing to fork out a paycheck to see you fight there's always going to be an incentive for fighters to keep on fighting. But that obviously doesn't mean it's always a good idea. Martinez looks good but his knees were shot last time we saw him and probably are still banged up.
I wanted to get excited about a prospect of a Martinez comeback but even against Chavez Jr. it's a mismatch. Even though Chavez Jr. is coming off a defeat he's still the active fighter. He's been fighting while Martinez has been retired for four years now.
I'll stay posted on this to see what happens but I would say it's not a good idea for Martinez who's been retired for four years and with shot legs to come back. Who knows though, he could somehow have rejuvenated legs for another 12 rounds and come out and actually surprise all of us. Could be just another feat of greatness for the legend.
Unfortunately future generations of casual fans will simply look at the record books and see, Floyd Mayweather beat Manny Pacquiao. Only those that do their research will know what we all know, that Mayweather avoided Pacquiao because a prime Pacquiao would have destroyed a prime Mayweather.
It was the best win in Wilder's resume. Ortiz came to fight and gave him a heck of a fight. He could have beat Wilder if it weren't for the ringside shenanigans by the medical staff checking on Wilder. To this day that whole thing left me confused and frustrated because it took away precious seconds from an Ortiz that could have gone for the kill before gassing like he eventually did.
Ortiz is an elite heavyweight and he's up there in age but at heavyweight where power is arguably the biggest factor, it doesn't really matter.
Jim Gray's acting dumb like Porter or anyone for that matter can just hop inside the ring without being stopped. Showtime for sure pushed that because they wanted to hype it up. No one's getting inside that ring without Showtime's permission.
I don't think so. I think Kovalev just has flaws and they were exposed in the Ward fights. He gets frustrated with boxers but he learned how to cope with it better and was doing pretty good in the Alvarez fight starting in the 4th once he started to walk him down. Unfortunately he got caught with a good punch and there's nothing you can do about that. That's boxing for you. All three judges had Kovalev up on the scorecards but that one right hand changed the entire fight. It can happen to anyone.
I don't mind seeing either fight. The fact that that Wilder and Ortiz already did it once makes me want to see it again because of the uncertainty of whether or not Ortiz could have finished it in the 8th. If I remember correctly Ortiz had Wilder rattled in the 7th and nearly knocked him out. However, for some reason the doctor came to Wilder's corner at the start of the 8th and took away valuable time from Ortiz. Could Ortiz have finished it had it not been for Wilder's corner giving him precious seconds before the round started? I don't know. But that's one of the reasons I wasn't happy with the finish of the first fight.
That's not really a good scenario because like some have mentioned Gennady has been the "man" at 160 for several years now. He's 36 and could potentially retire within three years. Guys like Canelo, Saunders, Andrade, Jacobs, Charlo, all these guys are at least a few years younger than Golovkin. If any of these guys at some point become big at 160 it'll only be because Golovkin's run is winding down. GGG is the top dog right now, if you want to have an argument for who is second then that's an argument you can have.
I get the whole reason why he's fighting spence. Better to lose to spence than lomo when everyone can say you had no chance anyways.
You're assuming Garcia is walking into a trap only because it'll look better to fans? That's ridiculous. If you really think Garcia is aiming at Spence because he thinks a beating from Spence would look better than a beating from Loma than you're really looking at this all wrong.
Garcia is trying to be great. He wants Spence because it challenges him. Why not fight a lower tier welterweight and get the same result? Wouldn't people say the same thing? "He fought a bigger guy, much respect to Garcia." The reason Garcia isn't fighting Loma is because Loma or specifically Bob Arum doesn't want Loma anywhere near Garcia. Not only that but Top Rank's falling out with Garcia makes it even harder to make.
To think that these fighters are going up in weight simply to avoid a fighter in their division at the expense of an ass whooping is ridiculous. I'm sorry.. Like Chavez Sr. says, "Con todo respeto." ("With all due respect.") :boxing:
I don't think it's that easy. Porter's unrelenting pressure always kept Garcia away from firing away. He basically froze up his offense for the majority of the fight. Khan's fast and quick on his feet but Porter lunges in with his punches and that could spell a bad night for Khan. Khan can be an elite welterweight but his chin is his greatest downfall. He's so fun to watch but his glass chin has hurt him big time.
You are uninformed, making uninformed statements is never a good idea.
First of it's already september. A good training camp is three months, that would be october, november, and december, meaning the fight at the earliest could only happen in January.
But Porter just had a tough fight and is likely to take a month away at least before he goes back to training camp, therefore, earliest is actually February, in a perfect world that is.
So already the fight couldn't possibly happen this year mathematically.
And then there is the fact that Showtime already posponed the Spence/Garcia fight to next year because of the Wilder/Fury fight at the end of the year, that means that Spence CANNOT actually fight this year due to scheduling reasons.
And if Showtime still wants to go on with the Spence - Garcia fight, then it means that Spence can only fight Porter mid next year or even late next year after he fights Garcia.
Spence figured this out coz he's smart, you didn't coz you're not.
I wasn't saying it to throw shade on Spence. He's one of my favorite fighters. In the moment it just sounded like he might be done fighting for the year which isn't a bad thing he already fought twice which is the norm for top fighters nowadays. But, I did hear that he mentioned Mikey Garcia in the post fight conference. Apparently he wants Mikey in December if possible and Porter sometime next year.
Spence is a great fighter but I don't think he'd walk through Porter that easily. Both guys have had some solid matchups and fought elite competition. Porter is aggressive and his pressure nulls a lot of his opponents offense. Not only that but he has a pretty solid chin. Spence is strong, a bit more methodical in his approach, but the fight itself would be interesting. Both are elite welterweights and would produce a competitive fight in my opinion. The only danger I see in Porter, however, is his vulnerability to get clipped when he's coming in with his punches. I thought Garcia would clip him with a left hook in several of those flurries but never landed a significant power shot that hurt Porter. Either way, it's still a vulnerability in my opinion and Spence Jr. could expose it.
Sounds like a wasted 2019 without meaningful fights until 2020. No thanks. I think it's good marinate a fight but not to burn it. 2019 should be the year we start getting some unification fights.
That man was quick in saying he'd like the fight for next year haha. Must mean he's not trying to fight this year again. I wonder though if the Garcia talks are still ongoing because last I heard they wanted to do it before the year was out.
It won't be lomachenko who mikey is deathly afraid of that's for sure.
You must be trolling lol. I think you had a typo and meant to put Bob Arum in there.
Pacquiao vs. Garcia wouldn't be a bad fight in my opinion. But that's the only fight that would justify Mikey not fighting Spence for his 147 debut. I love Garcia but if he goes for anyone else besides Spence or Pacquiao at 147 all his big talk of wanting the top dog at welterweight will make him look bad. And what's the excuse? Spence accepted the challenge and both are advised by Al Haymon. It should be an easy fight to make. If Mikey fights another welterweight besides Pac or Spence it'll make his talk seem diluted. Just my honest opinion.
Pacquiao would be the A-Side. Just because Broner is loud doesn't mean it warrants him the top spot. He's a good fighter but at 47 he doesn't carry his power and this version of Manny would outpoint him and overwhelm him.
I was critical of the fight to. As a Pacquiao fan I can be honest with myself and say this isn't the Pacman of 10 or even 5 years ago. But when I analyze the fight a little more I realize that this is impressive stuff that Pacquiao is doing this late into his career. His style is different obviously taking into account that he may not feel like he used to. He's sharp, quick, but he picks his punches and connects when he picks em. He's got a killer left uppercut and still has that elusive straight left that somehow cuts through the guard still. Pacquiao is a reinvented fighter. Who knows if there's one last great fight left in him but he could do very well against most fighters today. A Crawford, Loma fight might push him to his limit to see what exactly is left in him. But at 39 years of age, with the legacy he's already created, along with him fighting at a world class level, this guy is a living legend. Instead of slandering his image by saying he uses PEDs, just respect the greatness.
Anybody can look good against a body bag, but Golovkin isn't a bodybag. Canelo is a solid fighter but Golovkin's iron chin and relentless attack should overwhelm Canelo in their rematch. I just hope GGG applies more pressure. I can't see Canelo standing to trade with a power puncher like GGG tbh. I think he'll resort back to his same tactics from their first fight once he starts feeling Golovkin's power again.
Yeah I never was a fan of Ward to be honest. Seems like a knowledgeable guy but at times biased against fighters like GGG. I never was a fan of his style. I mean it clearly worked for him and with that style you're gonna probably end up taking less damage in the long run. But it's far from fan friendly. That's not to say I don't like defensive fighters but I like when they mix in some offense like a Juan Manuel Marquez for example. I thought he was very technical but his offense was also explosive.
Go home Ward, you're drunk. Ain't nobody breaking anyone here. Golovkin is still a game fighter. I swear some people act like he was demolished within the distance. The fight was competitive and close, and went the distance and the outcome is debatable which warrants a third fight. Golovkin was never hurt, he was never on the canvas, so please explain to me how Canelo broke GGG?
Man, Floyd is a punk. He ducked Pacquiao for 5-6 years and then hugged him throughout the entire fight. Mayweather may or not fear Pacquiao but he sure as heck feared losing that 0 and Pacquiao was the man that could take it away. Floyd's legacy will forever have an asterisk on it. Smh.
Floyd himself knew that he don't stand a chance against a prime pac that's why he waited that long but still got beaten by an injured and a past prime pac.
Exactly. Pacquiao's defeats didn't stop him from continuing to test himself against the elite of boxing. I'm not saying Pacquiao didn't have a problem losing, but he sure wasn't afraid to risk it. Mayweather on the other hand knew that if that 0 dissapeared it would have damaged his brand. He built his brand around the fact that he was undefeated. That's why people tuned in! They didn't tune in to see a master class boxer or to see him knock people out, people tuned in to see someone beat Mayweather and take 0 away.
I'd prefer Golovkin to fight Derevyanchenko. That's his mandatory and it's a solid fight for the short notice and if you still want to salvage the big fight date. Another opponent I'd be surprised if they picked him would be Gilberto Ramirez. If Golovkin is going towards cementing his legacy a fight with Zurdo for a world title at 168 would be great.
