Floyd will be at 152 for the weigh in, and 155 max on fight night. It'll be no problem to go back to 147, or stay around that weight to face Martinez in Nov/Dec
but i cant blame Floyd for the pool bieng shallow.
what does everyone else think ?
Spot on. And Mayweather Martinez couldn't happen because at the time Martinez was free Mayweather was reaching out to Pacquiao to get that fight made.
The most important thing is to be able to adapt as Mayweather adapts to how the fight is going on. You can't rely on one thing to work on Floyd for the entire fight.
I know the 50/50 situation didn't help, but it's not like if that was the last thing that needed to be agreed on. They couldn't even agree on the date and venue.
Cotto wins, leads to Cotto vs Canelo and guarantees Mayweather vs Guerrero. Leading to a Sept bout between winnner of Cotto and Canelo vs Mayweather
Trout wins, leads to Mayweather vs Canelo immediately
wtf is the point of a rematch???? there was a clear winner!...
you guys here actually supporting this are whats wrong with boxing, ***** atone thing but happy with another and its the same ****....
also, where does this leave bradley???... bradley needs a new manager, this dude cameron dunkin, does he work for top rank or his fighters??.... i guess that topic is for another thread but bradley stays taking L's....
This rematch isn't such a bad decision. It was a close fight, where some people even had Alvarado ahead. And sure it ended with the ref stepping in and stopping the fight early. But it's not as if Rios was dominating the entire fight. Rios was also in danger of losing. I know people are enamored with Rios, but let's not forget that he was given a gift W over Abril. Make Rios earn the road to big fights with a Rios vs Alvarado rematch, this is one fight that will still not disappoint fans if it's made.
can you explain why he agreed to OSDT for floyd but wouldn't take tests when JMM suggested? that doesn't seem logical.
This really could have helped Manny's negotiations tactics, if he simply just decided to do the testing Floyd wanted for each fight Pac has had since Clottey. But, he still hasn't lol. Yet, people claim he's already agreed lmao.
And now thanks to this, there is a huge demand for a Floyd vs Canelo fight. Intentional or not, what was once a joke opponent for Floyd is now seem as the biggest threat. LOL. Imagine if Canelo would have fought the top contenders in these past 2 years?
Fast forward to February 2014, Devon has back to back great wins vs legit opponents at 147.
"Floyd will never fight a slick young fighter, he can't handle that southpaw style!"
It just seems like everything is late to be finalized IMO and the promotion for the fight is going to be affected. I have the feeling this fight won't sell as well as the last few Mayweather fights especially without Canelo -Trout on the undercard
In a way these events are promoting the fight too.
Floyd wanted to fight Canelo 2 years ago, it didn't happen because Canelo wasn't ready according to Canelo himself. Since then, Canelo has gotten ready I guess? LOL
Very valid points guys. I know they will never pull out cause Floyd makes them money but I worded it all wrong. Ill ask u this. What would Floyd do without Golden Boy?
In an unlikely universe that Golden Boy just doesn't want to make money and decide to do this, you don't think another promotional company would try and set up a similiar deal with Floyd?
I thought it was a little overboard. He acted like he just watched his family die or something. No disrespect but he should be a bit happier
Seriously. He acted like if he just overcame a lot in his life. Coming from the point where nothing was going for him and he kept at it even though it was tough and somehow he's now a champion. Oh wait...
This is how it went down...
Golden Boy and Top Rank send ****ty offers to each other
Golden Boy tells Mares it's a 3m offer to Nonito
Top Rank receives offer, doesn't tell Nonito
Golden Boy tells Mares that Nonito has rejected the deal
I agree it's slim pickings at 147, but there's a load of fights I'd rather see at him take at 154 than Guerrero, Alexander, or Khan, and some of them are even more marketable (Martinez at 54, Canelo especially)
I wouldn't like to see Martinez at 154 due to his age and the fact that he hasn't made that weight in quite a long time. It only makes sense at 160, but we're now going in to the territory of expecting Floyd to do unreasonable things.
if you say so dude.
so your complaint is floyd makes people fight at the weight floyd feels most comfortable rather than fight them at a higher or lower weight where the opponent would be most comfortable.
so what?
Yeah, I don't understand why is there an issue? Plus, most of the top 140 fighters and down the line potential Floyd opponents will just naturally go up to WW anyway (with or without the Floyd fight). Garcia, Lucas, and Peterson.
Ok so if Floyd brought no money, he'd be avoided, but he does so he's not. What's your point again?
A better question is, why isn't he going after a pretty green, yet hugely marketable Canelo in favor of much less marketable zero threats like Guerrero, Alexander, or marketable but hugely flawed, zero threat Khan?
because then the question would be
"Why isn't he going after Guerrero? He's chasing the money vs the more inexperienced and less deserving fighter in Canelo who is coming off a victory over a 140 lb."
We're looking at 4-6 fights for Floyd, let the man be judged after his career is over. Instead of sitting here debating who he isn't fighting before he even starts his new contract with Showtime.
Paulie had a tough fight with Cano, and it was a pretty close fight but that doesn't mean he's done for...come on. This is a better fight than Burns at 135. All the 140 guys were already committed for a fight, so who else? Vazquez is with Zangief or whatever that promoter's name is and they don't work with Golden Boy. So who else? Broner has shown his skills vs clearly inferior fighter. This could potentially be a walk in the park for Broner, but it could definitely become really hard for him. He's fighting someone that's naturally 147, and someone that can actually move. If Broner wins, it will be because he's showing us a new set of skills. How is this not something to look forward to? This is a good test for Broner. And you better believe that if he does win, he will go to 140 and fight one of the top guys there.
Sigh, I still don't think I guys get it. The deal should not be looked at on a fight by fight basis. That's not what ShowTime is after. They are trying to look at the deal over the long haul. So it should be looked at long term. They aren't just banking on this fight, but on Floyd bringing viewers, helping them catch up to hbo, legitimizing their boxing programming and attracting the next generation of fighters etc. This isn't about that one fight. That's not what the deal is about at all. That's not how companies like ShowTime do business.
In other words, they're willing to lose money up front because this is more of an investment than a money generator from the start. Floyd might have the opt out clause, but I doubt he will use it after 1 fight.
Man Guerrero is an afterthought. I'd say nice guy, deserves a payday, though apparently not very bright and a jesus freak. But give me his top 3 wins. Then compare to wildly overhyped Canelo, who's only getting started. Somehow the cherrypicking hypejob built up a better resume in a couple of years than the "6 time, 4 division champ" lol
There's only 1 welter weight that is deserving of a Mayweather fight, and that's Bradley. Everything else can be easily criticized at this point. We're going to see the Canelo fight most likely. For 2014, the fighter that comes out of that 140 tourney will be the most deserving to fight Floyd. Since opposition is thin and they want to fight in the UK...Khan can just have two more wins vs credible opponents (most likely can't do it though) and they're have a fight in the UK for late next year. Either way, they're all not on Floyd's class, even if one of them looks impressive in their previous fights. Pacquiao will be a cherry pick too, unless he avenges his JMM and Bradley losses then it becomes a legit fight again.
Floyd fights Guerrero, it's a cherry pick and he's scared of Canelo
Floyd fights Canelo, it's a cherry pick and he's scared of Guerrero
Maybe he should have fought them both on the same night LOL #MayDay
