There is NO WAY "prime" Tyson could handle a "prime" Frazier. Frazier was a non-stop wrecking machine. Tyson was a young and untested puncher. And for anyone who thinks that Tyson would KO Frazier the same way Foreman did, you are wrong. Tyson doesn't have the same pure punching power that Foreman had. He also didn't have the same reach, chin or heart.
I won't blame Roy Jones for the state of the HW division. To do so is just plain stupid. In my opinion, these things need to change:
-There needs to be ONE freakin' champion per weight class under ONE sanctioning body
-Too many weight divisions add to the disarray. Can someone PLEASE explain to me why we need a super version of our current weight classes. And can someone please tell me who really gives a flying squirrel about the cruiserweight division?
-Title shots are handed out to ANYBODY. All you have to do is ask. How often have we seen a fighter have a record of 17-8-5 with 5 of those 8 losses occurring back to back before a "title eliminator" win that guarantees them a shot at the title?
-Rankings need to be compiled by one authority. This goes back to the "One sanctioning body" thing from before... :(
I know that a lot of people can think of a number of things that need to change, but the state of the HW division can't be placed on one fighter. And, while I'm not a huge fan of Roy Jones, he offers entertainment in his fights and he's got a great personality. Something that can't really be said for the out of shape, out of condition, no fundamentals, gasping for air by round 3 fighters of the HW division.
What a crock of shit.
It had nothing to do with Lewis actually being ducked e.g Tyson paying him off, Bowe dumping the belt in the trash rather than fight him.
I can see you're non biased when it comes to Lewis.
Exactly. It's a known fact that Tyson and Bowe both ducked Lewis when they had their chance to fight and probably beat him.
Micheal Spinks was one of the best light heavy champs ever. He won two controversial decisions against old man Holmes.( no way he won the second Holmes fight, #1 was close) He beat Steffan Tangstad and Drunk Cooney. Not exactly great. He was a good heavyweight at best. I find it curious how you would question anyone saying Spinks, but then saying Lewis is one of the worst? That's nuts!
It's not nuts to me. Lewis was boring and unimposing at times.

Is it? :p
Definitely Lennox Lewis, Lamon Brewster, WK.
I'm curious though, why do people say Michael Spinks? He had enough ability to make 3 title defences before it was stripped from him (Sancioning body BS). He never lost his title in the ring and the only fighter to a) beat him b)knock him down and c) knock him out was Tyson in his prime. I guess it's just opinion, but I'm just curious...
I'd say Roy Jones was the most dominant at LHW:
1. Michael Spinks
2. Ezzard Charles
3. Gene Tunney
4. Archie Moore
5. Charley Burley
6. Harry Greb
7. Tommy Loughran
8. Sam Langford
9. Bob Foster
10. Roy Jones Jr.
I barely squeeze him past Jimmy Bivins
Burley?
Don't get me wrong, Imira, cause personally I think it's wonderful that you rightfully acknowledge the greatness of Charley Burley...But at Light Heavyweight? I'm not even sure if he had any fights at Light Heavyweight, but if he did it'd only have been a couple. Burley's more known as an all-time great Middleweight and to a lesser extent, Welterweight.
Besides that, your list is excellant!
Hm? I read somewhere that he moved up to and fought at LHW in 1945 and stayed there until 1947. That's when he beat Billy Smith and another LHW, I can't think of his name right now. But I'll check again because I don't want to look like an idiot. :o
Isn't it amazing that Ring magazine called Johnson "Fighter of the Year" based, mainly, on his fights with Jones and Tarver? Those kinds of things make being a boxing fan feel dirty.
What kills me about the Louis v Walcott decision is that Louis KNEW he lost the fight and almost immediately stormed toward the locker room after the final bell. When the "winner" knows he shouldn't have "won", then that should tell you something.
I was rooting for Hopkins, but boxing really needed Taylor to win.
Taylor just defeated Hopkins twice in a row. No matter what anyone says, there's no spin to change that fact.
Hopkins is now in Taylor's past. I'm waiting to see if Taylor can retain the undisputed title and prove that he's a worthy successor to the crown. Any fighter can win a title, but it's what a fighter does with it that makes him a champion.
he got tons of credit, and tons of stick.
it wasnt a one sided barrage of abuse aimed at lennox.
definately the greatest british heavyweight of all time
I'll go one further and say that, since Holmes, Lewis is the last real legendary fighter that we've seen in the ring.
why do some hate him so much???
?
I don't know. I don't know much about him aside from his drug use.
I doubt very much that it had to do with Pete's drug use. But I would say it had much more to do with his grating personality, clowning in the ring, and general disrespect that he showed his opponents at times (especially post fight)...
But this seems like a plausible explanation.
I'll take Joe Louis. His trademark uppercut to left hook combination has to be seen to be believed.
Mike Tyson, Jack Dempsey and Jack Sharkey also deserve note as well.
I have said it once and I will say it again, don king needs to be killed. Someone has to assassinate this motherfucker. That is the only way boxing can be saved, this motherfucker cannot be involved anymore. I don't know how the FBI has not come up with some type of evidence against king to throw him in jail for a long time. If the FBI won't do it someone else should kill him.
I was going to post this but you beat me to it. Don King can't die fast enough for me. And if someone were to help him along, I can't say I'd give a damn.
I think Roy should just retire. He's becoming more and more like Tyson. Loves boxing, just doesn't love being a boxer anymore. He should just say, "F--- it, I've done this and that in the ring. I don't have anything else to prove.", and walk away. Even if you don't like him, you have to, at least, give him credit for what he's done in the ring.
I'm not a fan of Roy Jones Jr. but I take nothing away from him. He's a multi division titlist, considered the best P4P boxer in the world (though I STONGLY disagree), and although he didn't fight the best of the best all the time, his fights were entertaining. Plus, he's about due for retirement anyway. 15 years and some change. Look at Holyfield, Holmes, Leonard, Ali, Frazier, Louis and do the right thing. So long Roy. Thanks for the memories.
What makes Robinson the greatest is that he showed consistency against much more solid competition over a longer career than most losers of today. He faced and defeated every fighting style in the ring. In my opinion, there's not a single welterweight in history that can show Robinson something that he hasn't already shut down at least 4 times over. That's why, no matter what any of these younger "fans" may say, Sugar Ray Robinson is, STILL, pound for pound, the greatest fighter in the history of the sport.
Vitali ain't pretty, but can anyone really argue with his results? Right now, that behemoth is gonna hold on for a few years and bring the best out of his opponents because he's the man to beat. Haseem Rahman has some serious potential as well.
