The only Winky fights I've seen were his fights with Mosley and Tito. He does not roll his shoulders and does not tuck his chin. He pretty much puts both of his hands up and jabs.
well. wat most ppl considered the hardest puncher in the world, trinidad, landed 55 punches, which is less than he landed in one round in his previous fight.
need i say more?
I think Hopkins wears a fighter down mentally as well as physically. Winky needs a couple years more expierience but he may never get this gift as most fighters dont. That is why Hops was able to ko Tito aside from landing that bomb.
I agree man, anyone who dominates someone THAT bad and doesn't knock someone out, there's something wrong. Just look at B-Hop, dominated Tito in even less of a fashion and KOed him.
Hopkins dominated Trinidad just as much or moreso than did Wright, because Trinidad was much closer to his best fighting form when Hopkins beat him.
Hopkins landed PLENTY of filthy punches on Trinidad as well. Felix ate about as many good left hand leads and sneak right hands as I've seen someone eat.
I'd rather look boring and win, than look exciting and get KO'd.
Thats true. I never said it was bad what Winky does, I just said he is boring to watch. I would never order a Winky Wright career collection. :D
I see, but I dont think it's that simple. Tito's face was like a beachball in the 12th round and his fighting/work rate were a fraction of what they were at the beginning. The thread Tito posed to Winky in the 12 deminished.
I was just using it as an example, play smart and win, or get reckless and risk losing. That was the bottom line. I wasnt using the "win" as the analogy, the tactics.
Not a good anology... in the NBA there aren't distinctions between a win. A win, truly is a win.
In boxing you can win by UD, MD, DQ, TKO, on cuts... etc. There are differences in the way you win and TKO/KO is the best way to win.

Here's an example, say you're The San Antonio Spurs, playing in game 7 of the NBA finals, and you have a big lead, all you need to do is run out the clock and play smart to win. Are you going to do exactly that, albiet, looking less spectacular, or are you going to run and gun, to show off and risk having your lead trimmed, or even worse, losing the game?
Winky is boring to watch, yes. I agree. However, it works for him, and it helped him DOMINATE a man that was supposed to go walk right through him.
Well, even less. Winky didnt EVEN TRY to knock Tito out.

I respect the "sweet science" but he could have had a "sweet knockout" but was to scared of opening himself open.
Fighting scared, or completely dominating your opponent. It depends on which way you see it. It's called The Sweet Science, not The Sweet Knockout.

Winky keeps his hands up over his face almost like a mask. Its impressive...but boring.

He just puts his arms up. Thats his defense. Nothing spectacular.
Want to see a real defense?
Just putting his arms up? All boxers do that, why dont they get hit has infrequently as Winky?

I see it. His arms and elbows take all the punches because he's shielding his body and chin. That doesn't impress me and its rather boring. He also throws punches just to say they landed, like Ouma. There are NOT "bad intentions" behind his punches when he throws just like Ouma. So you know the fight is going the distance against a respectable opponent.
He probably could have knocked Tito out but was too chicken shit to put a couple punches together. To me, that is the epitome of fighting scared.

Blood - winky does NOT just put his arms up. It's not like he just leaves em up there and gets hit a lot. He times punches well and takes a lot of shots on his elbows and gloves, thus taking little damage from the actual punches thrown at him. He also uses that jab as a form of defense to disrupt the other fighters offense. This should be quite clear from watching him fight...I don't see how you cannot see this.
Tu - Winky is in almost every form of the word a defensive fighter, and I don't think I've ever seen him incorporate the bob and weave technique into his strategy. His defense is based upon timing, accuracy and toughness.

A good offense is a good defense. That is what Winky employs.
Winky’s southpaw stance, speed, footwork and experience make his ring generalship very good. He employs basic head movement (bob and weave) and keeps his hands up and chin tucked.
It's just the fact that He is such an aggressive fighter that makes his defense so good.
What compliments winky's defense is his overall strength, reflex and the stiff jab. His strength doesnt mean 1 punch ko power His reflex to know when to block upstairs and downstairs and the jab to keep you at bay and where he wants you in order for him to be affective. He is like the Pistons, he works his offense off of defense.
IMO his defense wont be as effestive at 175 if he goes there cause of the fact that relies on his strength to block shots. At that weight they will hurt more and get thru his strong hands and might have to change his defensive tactics with head movement.
I agree with a lot of this, bigger stronger guys are going to hit his arms harder and will eventually get him to drop his guard or may punch right through it.
