I'd take Hopkins in an instant. I've been enjoying his work on Friday Night Fights. Lewis makes no sense. If he wasn't able to say "Definitely, he needs to throw the jab, jab, jab, jab, jab. Ummm Definitely" then he'd be a mute. I'd love to see Roy Jones back on the team because he put the others in their place and his ability to predict outcomes was impressive.
Somewhere in 1989 or 1990 when I was like 4 or 5 years old. I remember watching fights with my dad and wasn't very interested until I saw a Pernell Whitaker fight. So then he showed me some older fights, classics from the 70s and just about every Ray Leonard fight we could get our hands on. Once I started watching the two of them the rest was history. A few years later I started watching just about everything on TV. Been a love fest ever since.
Are you kidding the hate will never stop as they will always find something , the haters are just losers and Floyd is a winner thats why they hate him .
He was being sarcastic.
Nice topic. Personally, I love watching defense more than offense. I enjoy a brawl every now and then as much as the next person, but I'm trying to figure out when the name of the sport became "Knockouts" instead of boxing. Stuff that Larry Merchant says for example "Wake me up when they start slugging it out" just gives off the wrong vibe to me. I've been a boxing fan from a very young age and my guy from the very beginning was Pernell Whitaker. He was the total package and there was nothing more I enjoyed then seeing him hit and not get hit. Defense is a real thing of beauty and I have a ton of respect for fighters that can mix it all together. But I fear that the next GUY isn't right around the corner like it had been throughout my whole boxing experience. When Pernell got a bit older Roy Jones was there to save the day. His brash style that relied heavily on his amazing reflexes. He wasn't traditional, but in his prime he owned the ring and could do everything. Then came Floyd Mayweather Jr who I really started taking notice of in the late 90s. It might sound like I only like the P4P caliber fighters, but at the time I didn't know any of these guys who be a huge success. That's the style I'm most attracted to is all.
I look around today and wonder who's going to take Floyd's place (for me). Obviously some other people don't care because they're out for blood and like KO fighters who get their brains bashed in the process. I guess I've always liked the smarter hit and don't get hit philosophy. I respect the warrior type and a brawl can really get your blood boiling. But I'm one of the rare few who seems to enjoy a boxing clinic just as much. Boxing right now reminds me of basketball in the sense that in the 80s for example, it was all about the fundamentals. Players came into the NBA far more prepared (outside of the few of course) than today. The game is more about speed and athleticism, yet most guys can't even can the mid range jumper anymore. A lot of what used to be standard is a lost art today as Clyde Fraizer would say. Defense in the NBA is a completely difference subject because of all the rule changes.
Anyway, it's nice to see someone else thinking beyond knock outs and wondering what the future holds. I think we're going to see a drastic decrease in fighters who are the overall package. Hell, we already are. You're one of my favorite posters on here btw. Very... logical. :)
This is almost too funny. Who makes an argument like this? I guess this is why I don't post on Boxing Scene much. You need to have your facts or you'll just walk into your own trap. You just **** on two fighters while trying to bash one and praise the other in the process. But this is what you call a failure.
I'm not interested one bit. Perhaps some people are right that he would try a new game plan in a rematch. But you'd have to think if one plan is going horribly wrong that you'd try something else in the SAME fight at least towards the later rounds. Haye seems fine doing the same unsuccessful crap, avoiding punishment and laughing all the way to the bank. I don't respect that mind set and wouldn't be excited for a rematch. When you get your opportunity you have to take it. Otherwise all the trash talk and boasting is meaningless.
I've actually been wondering the same all week. Many people line up all these fighters who they call "fighting the best" when the "best" hasn't done shit. I agree that the ONLY one right now who even comes close to deserving a shot is Cotto. The rest of the "best" need to fight each other. Floyd can't fight every damn one of them. There is always so much hype about the guys Floyd "ducks" and then when he beats them they are no longer important. Then the rest of the guys slide in and it's the same old story. Truth is, most of them won't do anything to for his legacy. He'll beat them and people will say that whoever it is was overrated or some BS. Cotto is a good fight, but the rest of the so called best really need to fight each other. It's laughable that so many of you think you know boxing yet you fall for all these traps and are blinded by hate. Now everyone wants a piece of Mayweather since that's where the money is, but how many of them really deserve a shot? Barely any of them till further notice.
He's been my favorite fighter for years, but my respect for him grows all the time. I take everything in rather then pointing at the things that maybe he shouldn't do. One thing that never gets touched on enough is how professional he is in the ring. He really don't complain or hold grudges. In the Zab fight I was really surprised to see how he reacted to the low blow and the whole mess. He just stood there minding his own business and even hugged Zab before the last round. Even though they are friendly outside of the ring (or at least were at one time) that's not what you'd expect from a guy who just hit low and on the back of the head on purpose to react.
The same goes for how he treats other fighters after the match is over. He just lets it all go. The fight is over and there is no longer any reason to promote the fight. It's more like if you're not an asshole to him then he's not an asshole to you. That's the way it goes with him. Some don't like it, but at least he's consistent with it.
Nothing I can really say about him boxing ability that hasn't been said over and over. I'm amazed with the guy every time I see him. I've watched his career over and over and to see where he's at now is truly amazing.
If Zab lost (which I doubt he will) it would atleast be funny considering he's been talking so much shit lately. However, I want to see him fight Floyd more then anything so that people like *cough* the thread creator *cough* can stop saying shit like "Floyd hasn't fought a live opponent since 2002 blah blah blah". As a Floyd fan, I NEED THIS FIGHT TO HAPPEN! I can't wait till April 8th.
the funniest KO ever has got to be, Robbie peden knocking out Nate Campbell, fuck that was funny when Campbell dropped his hands and stood in front of Peden.
"It's my fault"
"It's my fault"
"It's... my fault" Is all he could say lol.
I agree, this is one of the best I've ever seen. I couldn't believe my eyes.
There is nothing good to say about Zab at this very moment. I can't believe this shit he pulled tonight. He's as mature as a 5 years old throwing a temper tantrum. Then he blames Don King and says "Don's fucked up" LOL. If that's not bad enough that interview made him look so bad. You know what I'm sayin guys?
What the hell is Judah doing? None of this fooling around shit is necessary and it makes him look real bad. What maturity? Zab really needs to pick it up! He'll probably win somehow, but this is not what anyone wanted to see from him.
i hate the interviewer...such a disrespectful mother fucker.
I totally disagree. He's one of the only guys who actually gets the answers and is brave enough to call people on the stupid shit they say. Jim is good stuff.
What are you talking about?
I think he was referring to the guy who can't speak english.
Anyway, TRUTH I think this is one of those times where it's very understandable to ditch the sig/avatar right away of the losing fighter. Zab didn't even show up tonight and he deserved the booes he received.
I don't like Zab in the slightest bit but I like most really wanted to see him fight Floyd (my favorite fighter). Floyd needs mega fights and this one isn't his fault at all. But now we know that Zab is definitely not the real deal so you can throw that fight out the window even if the judges gave him the win which thankfully they didn't.
Fight Hatton when he's finally ready and stops pulling this "I need another year" shit
As of now I guess he'll fight Baldomir and like always the Floyd haters will bitch about the match up.
Floyd was going for the knock out. He let loose a bit more then normal in his first fight at 147. Like Ultimate said, he was more open because of that. I personally don't think he'll be that much slower so I don't think it gives Margarito better chances.
People want action. There's no science in jabbing and moving. I just did that shit sparring yesterday. No science, was boring as hell. People want action.
Don't group everyone together. I appreciate watching a boxing clinic just as much as I enjoy watching an all out brawl. I believe in doing whatever it takes to win and using your brain to fight. I love the defensive side of boxing. It's an art form that I truly get the most joy watching. Hit and don't get hit. It's so fucking brilliant and believe me, most boxers wish they could do it. Nothing like making your opponent miss and countering it right back at them. Thus is boxing, a sport of many different approaches. You clearly only like one style and that's unfortunate for you.
