Well would they? Jmm offers boxing ability, craftiness, counterpunching, he's athletic, good workrate, combinations, fast hands, strong defense.. Many would argue his style is somewhat of a departure from many of his fellow Latinos. So imagine Jmm were black, spoke fluent English, shouted out some random American City, entered the ring not to the tune of traditional Mexican music but to a hip hop song, and carried himself with some American swagger.. Would Pacquiao detractors still be claiming Pac is avoiding black americans? If not.. Then B-Hop's and all those making similar comments would in essence be fairly racist. Please discuss!
The answer is no. But that's because if JMM were black, he would've beaten Pacquiao. Both of the JMM/Pac fights were close and any one of the things that you mentioned would have been the difference. For instance:
1) Fluent English: Speaking a language that Pacquiao can borderline understand would allow JMM to serve up some white-hot trash talk. Spanish curse-words, widely accepted to be the least offensive of any curse words, are even less effective when not comprehended. I wonder how potent Pacquiao would be after hearing, "Pac-man, more like Pac-****" and "of countries with more than five million people, the Philipines rank dead last in literacy among adults." My guess: Not very.
2)Raised in an American Urban Center: Hopkins addressed this nicely. True "black" fighters are raised in the mean American streets. Mean American streets mean one thing: Mean American streetfights. There's no such thing as a street fight in the luxury and comfort of the Palace Kingdom of Ghana or that hidden paradise that JMM is from. A fighter with a street-fight history is a fighter with a sixth sense. If JMM were black ( assumed that he would have been involved in a number of dust-ups) he would have a keen sense of what to do if Pacquiao ever "fronted" or was ever "disrespectful." Advantage JMM? Of course.
3) Hip Hop Song: I mean this is so obvious, I feel like I shouldn't have to explain it. I wouldn't have the courage or dgnity to pet my own dog after hearing some of that Mariachi sh*t. I swear to god you could release a rabid caged wolverine on a pile of prime rib... pop on a diddy by some sombero-wearing trio... and instantly that beast is purring like a kitten.
Rap. Nas. Snoop. Fitty. That's what the #&$Y#$ I'm talking about. If JMM were introduced by Kanye, Pacquiao is sucking leather.
4) American Swagger: F*ck. And yes. America. You can't teach America. Red. White. Blue. U.... S.... A.... But what does it mean in the ring, you ask? U... S... A... I mean, how could one nation's soveriengty mean anything to a fighter. That's preposterous. U.. S.. A.. It doesn't make them stronger or fas... U! S! A! USA! ...or smarter... U!S!A! U!S!A! U!S!A! .. what effect could...USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA!
So, your question answers itself. Either that, or B-Hop is trying to build a fight for his friend Shane Mosley.
Lets hope the "best" welterweight in the world doesn't go two years in a row without fighting an actual welterweight.. a truly stacked division
Are you fucking retarded. He just fought two world champions... Let the man take a break.
Hopkins has 14 notable opponents out of his 20 defenses...Not a bad resume really.
Im going to support Mayweather here since people seem to think that he has fought shitty opposition over the years. How can anyone seriously say Floyd has not fought the best ever since winning his first title his resume included these names
De La Hoya
Baldomir
Judah
Mitchell
Gatti
Corley
N’dou
Sosa
Castillo
Chavez
Hernandez
Corrales
Augustus
Juuko
Manfredy
Hernandez
Seriously look at that list and how can anyone deny that Mayweather hasnt fought the best since winning the world title and winning a world title in less than 20 fights from an actual top fighter in Genaro is a feat in itself.
Both guys have an awesome resume and legacy but they go into 2 different directions when being evaluated.
Both of them are the greatest fighters in this generation of boxing, that cant be denied.
He never fought Mosley? Why?
B-Hop, he's made the big fights. FLoyd hasn't... YET. Get to it PBF. Personally I think PBF is twice the fighter that B-HOP ever was... but, he hasn't fought the fights he needs to.
I have a buddy who swears that Carter did the murders. I really don't know much about the whole thing though. I realize now that this wasn't very helpful
World Fight Night
This sort of ties into a thread I just saw about a Boxing SuperBowl... here's my idea...
WORLD FIGHT NIGHT
WHAT?
Boxing's Super Bowl. Three World Championship headliner matchups on one night. For instance instead of Pavlik/Taylor in Feb., Marquez/Pacquiao in Mar., and BHOP/CalZ in Apr., they all happen at one location on one night. This should be done once a year. Also, three very solid undercard matchups involving top prospects/fading stars. A boxing extrravaganza... Boxing's Super Bowl.
WHY?
Gives Boxing the frontpage of sports for a week. Gives Boxing a main event... something to build up to. This will draw in casual fans. Casual fans create pressure to clean up the sport. Cleaning up the sport gives us better fights.
WHEN?
Third week of February. Dead time in American sports. I don't know about other countries, but I imagine almost everywhere in the Northern Hempishere it's similar.
HOW?
Tough. Need alot of cooperation from alot of people. Promoters need to realize that an event like this will make them a fortune in the long run. It's too bad that today's promoters are constantly making Penny-wise pound-foolish decisions.
Ideally, it would be an event on Free Tv. But baby steps. Open up charging like 75 bones on PPV.
WHERE?
Would be an event that moves around... depending on bids from cities. As other countries begin reaching out to foriegn fighters... the event could be moved from the US to Europe and maybe Mexico/South America..
Give me suggestions and problems with/for this idea.
Mostly because of his effect on the sport, he was hugely popular and destroyed his often bigger opponents in exciting fashion.
Dempsey beat most of the top fighters of his era aside from Harry Wills who he could be accused of ducking. Sam Langford was already an old man by the time Dempsey arrived on the scene, Dempsey destroyed Fred Fulton who knocked out the old Langford.
The giant Willard who had knocked out Jack Johnson was destroyed in 3, Georges Carpentier was knocked out in 4, Jack Sharkey (who beat Harry Wills) was knocked out in 7, Tommy Gibbons lost to Dempsey by a decision and Firpo who destroyed Willard was knocked out by Dempsey in two.
I'm not sure if I would rate Dempsey as top 5 but maybe top 10, definitely top 15. It all depends on how you like to rank top HW's.
Wow. Someone who actually knows something about something.
I was watching an Edwin Valero fight with my friends this past weekend. And they thought that it was pretty watching a guy with a piece of his skull missing to be a bit ridiculous. At the very least they said they wouldn't be so interested in watching a live fight for fear they'd see him get KO Killed in the ring. What are everyone's thoughts on watching his fights? Does he atleast have a metal plate where he had the surgery? Also if i was a major fighter like Pacquiao i wouldn't wanna take a fight with him for fear of seriously hurting/killing him. If Pacman killed Valero, it would seriously hurt his marketability. Similar to what happened to ray boom boom mancini when he killed doo koo kim. Thoughts?
Valero makes me uncomfortable.
some sort of standard judging criteria. For a bunch of writers and pundits to jump in a room and pick or vote for who they personally think is the P4P best is idiotic at best. I mean the selection amounts to nothing more than a group of people say some one is the P4P just because they think so.
Does anyone know what the criteria is for judging and picking the P4P best? From what I understand, the process is completely arbitrary and vague with no real basis in a system or process for validation. The mere participation in this is sort of exercise is more of a reflection on the "dimness" of the voters and followers than a validation of the fighters.
I am a Floyd fan but do not have any idea how someone can be voted P4P best when they haven't proven they can beat everyone in their own division.
Until a fighter OWNS their own divison withoiut question, IMO, there is no way anyone can label them P4P. To do so is a complete choke and to pay attention to this makes you a nut hanger with no ability to think for yourself. Another name for this is called "follower".
Who cares... it's arbitrary anyway. It's supposed to give you an idea... it's not the be all end all. I agree with everything you said, but the tone. On the list of things wrong with boxing... the media's p4p rankings rank like 2089th.
Now all the Floyd haters are saying Hatton is a blown up welterweight. But then what is Floyd? He started at 130 pounds and Hatton walks around 30 pounds atleast heavier then what Floyd does.Mayweather is not a big guy at all and I think it is a lame excuse in a fight against a undefeated top 10 p4p fighter he knocked him out. Mayweather had the 2 most watched PPV's last year by a mile and I don't see how anyone can fault him for taking the Hatton fight. Since a lot of people wanted to see it, but now that Hatton got exposed it's Floyds fault.
I agree with the premise of this thread if not the spirit. People on this site put TOO MUCH STOCK INTO WEIGHT CLASSES. Enough already. They were both 147 for the fight. Jesus Christ, you would think Hatton had to gain 50 pounds the way people are talking.
Who'd win a fight between these 2 great fighters?
Probably Kessler in a close decision. This fight needs to happen. It's a shame Kessler doesn't have enough of a following in the US, to make it an easy setup.
I like your idea, but nobody would buy a boxing ppv thats 80 bucks. Almost no matter what the matchups were.
but it would be so much fun to have something like that. I like that other guys idea, network television! It would make more money than ppvs anyway with all the advertisements.
but if this kind of thing ever happened... :hail:
It would be fantastic.
People would pay.... It would be huge.
im pretty sure roys earned the right to say what ever he wants too
He has that right. Just like I have the right to be annoyed when he does it every FUCKING day.
I've been watching all the Pavlik fights available in the trading block. And I have to say that he was extremely green only a few fights ago. He has really progressed in an incredible way. The man who fought Miranda/Taylor is leaps and bounds better than the man who fought Zuniga/Mckart. In his coming bout do you think he will prove himself to be better, the same, or worse?
Extremely Green sounds like the name of a rock band.

Hatton was robbed and wants a rematch
Hatton was robbed? C'mon... enough already. I do think that Cortez was too active in that fight and tried to make himself the center of attention, but, Ricky was outclassed that night.
I mean come on guys. Beating Trinidad isnt that much of an accoplishment.Trinidad is shot. They looked good because their 2 old man fighting eachother. Jones is going to get knocked out again. He thinks hes on top again and can hang aroud the elite...
He looked good. I'd be suprised if Hopkins looks that good against Cal-Z.
How many body shots did Hatton try and throw?
He couldn't get close... man. Mayweather kept backpedaling and popping. It was actually a real strong performance from PBF. Do I think Hatton could of been less aggressive and lost a decision... yep. But I respect the way he tried to win the fight. It was the only way he had a shot. He just lost. It's too bad... it would've been great for boxing if Hatton had won.
i thought mosley beat cotto handily with his footwork and speed.. floyd would probably knock cotto out!
p.s. i was one of the few that knew floyd would KO hatton
Congratulations genius. What a prediction!
Who has Hatton beaten at 140 exactly besides an inactive 36 year old Tszyu where he was allowed to foul all night? A way past it Castillo, who was not even getting paid for the fight? Urango? Maussa? C'mon man, don't act like he's some kind of god at 140.
Yeah. That's a pretty good point. I like Hatton, but he's not a God. He's also limited as to what he can do in the ring. Unfortunately for Diaz, what Hatton does well, would probably work very well for the Hitman against Diaz. WHich is why I like Hatton in a fight. Certainly not because Diaz hasn't fought at 140.
Yes but the accomplished fighter doesn't win every time, Margarito was more accomplished than Paul Williams. He has knocked out Vivian Harris, Dominated Corley and beaten N'dou, He is fighting D.Hopkins right now, has been calling out everyone at 140, Hatton wont fight him, Malignaggi went on record to say Witter is the best at 140 and paulie's team was offered the fight but rejected.
How can you judge a guy you haven't seen fight yet? He has fast hands and is a slick counterpuncher who does a lot of switch hitting from different odd angles, always confuse his opponents by switching his stance while counterpunching. I will admit I was impressed with him when I saw his fight with Harris, he can punch and punch with Accuracy.
Why can't we get a Hatton/Witter fight? That could clear up alot of that mess. Although I would love for either one of them to pound Malignaggi's face.
Hatton by a late KO. I think people underestimate him as a pressure fighter especially against a smaller man.
I dislike the way that Hatton has been devalued after losing to Mayweather, the best fighter on the planet. Even though he got beat up bad toward the end of that fight, Mayweather was very uncomfortable throughout the duration of it trying to deal with Hatton.
Diaz is a very good fighter though.
Couldn't agree more. Hatton has been devalued since PBF. But, I think he was overvalued before it. SO I think everyone's in the right place right now with Hatton. His pressure style would wear down Diaz. Diaz would have to catch Hatton ALOT early to win. I think it would be a very good matchup.
I meant overall size.... i dont see him suiting the light welter division as mjuch as he does the lightweight one - i cant see him carrying his strength up
like everyone keeps saying, we dont know how he'd perform at the weight - its just my opinion
and as for getting the fuck out of here ?? has everyone got to be a boxing expert to have an opinion on this forum ??
No, my bad. I just hate, when people are like.. this guy has no chance. This guy dominates. It's stupid. I really hate it when they base it on never having fought in a division seperated by 4 pounds. Factor? yes. Deciding factor alone? Never.
