Part of it has to do with the fact that he doesn't have that much power. Above average to be sure, but not the one-and-done stuff of the likes of Tommy Hearns. So, he'll catch you clean on the face with a hard shot, but you won't go down, you won't go back, you probably won't get wobbled or buzzed, you'll just feel it. Big time. And he'll hit you again and again and again until the accumulation (and subsequent damage) makes you stop. Plus, his reliance on the body attack is obvious.
It's similar to the situation with Kelly Pavlik. He won't Julian Jackson, backfoot cold-cock you, but he'll wear your face into mush over a series of rounds. Look what happened to Edison Miranda.
I think there's a term that can be applied, one that describes a puncher's power in rather abstract and scientifically unfounded terms, but nevertheless seems to be quite apt in the occasionally physically counterintuitve world of boxing. "Heavy handed". Kelly Pavlik and Miguel Cotto are heavy handed, in the sense that, no matter where they hit you, it hurts, and it feels like they're actually packing rocks instead of fists.
Excellent post.
The historians always ring up Bowe-Holyfield Round 10 and Barrera-Morales Round 5, but here is one of the most overlooked great rounds in elite boxing history. Gomez is completely dominant early in the round and is about to stop Pintor, then somehow he manages to come back and by the end of the round has Gomez hurt. Note at the end how Gomez is lifted and carried back to his corner at the end of the round.
One of the greatest fights that I've ever seen. Gomez himself said that it was his most difficult bout.
I like his left hook to the body, but he doesn't bend his knees enough when he throws it. He reaches with his back straight and exposes himself when he throws it. You can't stand straight up with a guy like Cotto, you give him way too much target.
If Cotto uses his jab, I think he can take away most of what Gomez tries to do. When Gomez is most effective (or really, the only time he's effective) is when he's given free reign to choose what he wants to do. I can see him having a lot of trouble setting up his punches with Cotto.
Good posts, kid. Keep 'em up
Miguel Cotto's boxing ability is underrated at times. What? Just because he decides to box and not pressure someone at all times, that makes him a coward? Well, I don't agree with that. Even while he was boxing and Mosley was coming after him, he still engaged and landed some beautiful counter shots. He didn't run. When Mosley got there, Cotto fought back and countered back. Adjustments are made all the time, and Cotto made the adjustment. He was able to outbox Mosley down the stretch. We are so used to Cotto being a nonstop pressure fighter, and he is a pressure fighter, but he can do more than that, and that's a good thing for him and not a good thing for his opponents. Bottom line, he won the fight, and that's that.
Good post indeed. Those who think Cotto only knows how to come forward should watch the Abdulaev fight
Cotto last night looked extremely fast and he showed he's fighting right now at an extremely high level. Gomez wasn't the best opponent, but Cotto absolutely destroyed him. IMO Cotto is better in every way skill wise than Margarito, but with Margarito's chin and absolute determination he will make a fight of it. I see Cotto beating him, but it will be a well earned victory and a good fight for the fans.
Well said.
Reporter: Tony, what do you think your chances are against Joe Louis?
Galento: Joe who?
Reporter: Joe Louis.
Galento: I never hoid of da bum

Galento was awesome. Here's another one of his gems:

Interesting observation. I wonder if anyone can get under Cotto's skin? In all of the pre-fight pressers that I've seen, Cotto doesn't really say anything or look mad. If Cotto and Mayweather fight, Floyd will undoubtedly try to get under his skin like he always does. It would be weird to see Cotto flip out at a presser.!!
I remember reading an article about Cotto almost coming to blows with Carlos Maussa in their press conference. Apparently Maussa talked a little too much trash to the media and it didn't sit too well with Cotto.
I had Marquez winning, but man that 1 point deduction fucked him up,it would have been a draw, but the KO sealed it,i had Marquez winning by a point tough
Same here. The KD in the final round gave Vazquez the fight. Great fight no matter who won.
I scored it Vazquez 113-112
Gomez "My Overall Ability Is Better Than Cotto's"
To that I say... even a fool is too foolish to know he is a fool.
"The fool who persists in his folly will become wise."
--William Blake
After Cotto whups Gomez, Alfonso will have to thank Cotto for his newly found wisdom
Uh-oh.. If you had e-kids I would have already put them through e-college with all the points you've collected from me, G. Back for more?
And if you keep making picks like the one on this thread (Gomez by KO) you will be putting his e-grandkids through e-college as well ;)
Cotto TKO 10
the abdulaev fight cotto fights going back thru the majority of the fight
Exactly. Cotto has shown that he can fight going backwards/against the ropes as well
Where are all the Williams cock suckers :P
Apparently, a few of them haven't recovered from the shock, and are so delusional as to think that Williams can beat Cotto
I think Quintana would carve Hatton up.
He'd tag him when he comes close, just like Collazo did.
Except 1 thing: Quintana is on a higher level and much better fighter than Collazo. Aside from being a southpaw.........he's more of a problem because he's a better puncher.
We tend to agree
it was a joke.... i dont really know i just want him to win...
but he's tough and i think his jab is better than any ww cotto has faced...if he proves to be as tough as mosley, i think he beats cotto...
You state at the beginning of your post that you were joking, yet you end your post by stating the reasons (Good jab & toughness) why you believe Gomez can beat Cotto. This leads me to believe that your prediction was no joking matter, and that you truly believe that Gomez has a better than average chance of having his hand raised by the ref once the fight is over.
I respectfully disagree with said conclusion
I'm only going to say this once so please take my advice: download TVU and paste this link in to your browser tvu://66563. It won't take you long to download and the channel is running smoother than silk.
