"As far as what type of fight it will be, I never enter a fight with a game-plan. A guy can do completely different things from what you expect, so I prefer to adapt in the ring. I can switch my style, though. I feel I will be able to out-box him if he tries to slug with me. If he attempts to box me, I will get on the inside and counter-punch him. I definitely feel my overall ability is better than his. I'm gonna get him!"
Alfonso Gomez, star of "The Contender"
According to Gomez, Cotto has been on his wishlist for a very long time.
He sincerely believes he has Miguel's number. I can't find the clip, but somewhere here in cyberspace Alfonso is quoted as saying Miguel Cotto stands no chance whatsoever. You can hear some audible laughing in the background..
.......I guess there is something intimate and familiar about being born one day apart. I certainly feel a familiarity and connection to even the people born the same year as myself.. This is a spiritual thing for Gomez.
I should add.. Or so he believes..
this could be the fight that ends Gomez' career. He has shown a good chin and Cotto will punish him throughout this fight to late TKO or just battered Gomez but you cant blame Gomez for taking his shot. Course if I was Gomez I would have went after Cintron, a much easier chance at a title.

K and why does boxrec list a fight with Mayorga after the Gomez fight?
lol that totally sucks. Is Cotto going to sign that deal?
Yeah that would be bullshit, I hope Arum doesn't go that route.

I still say it's funny,
Because once again Cotto is better at everything. There's just no feasible way that Alfonso Gomez's boxing ability is better than Miguel Angel Cotto's.

Because Cotto is following the european career template. Ask Arum. Or maybe this is a tuneup for some other fight? I hope Cotto gets tested this year, he's a young fighter and still needs to prove himself, vs young competition.
I mean...who you want him to fight? People said "Oh he'll never beat Mosley". He beat Mosley and now its, "Ohhh he needs younger Comp."
Who the fuck you want him to fight? The Cloverfield Monster?
He'll beat either Cintron or Margarito who are the top WW under him, so in that case there's only 1 dude he should be fighting and we all know who that is

who's available??? stop typing so much crap.
Why this fight with so many other good welters?

If you are a huge, huge, HUGE underdog in a fight, you should keep your mouth shut and come to fight. Talking all this nonsense, even if it there are some good points made, does NOTHING but motivate the other guy.
Bottom line: If you are the better fighter, you have a chance to prove it in the ring. Talking about it does no good. That's my point.
I agree 100%. This is the classic case of "how can we sell this fight?" imo. Gomez's chances are next to null now. Gomez is terrible, he beat Gatti because Gatti couldn't fit well inside the limit 147 pounds and still he took some punishment! If you are an underdog on a 2007 Gatti fight you don't go on to beat Cotto.
I don't think Gomez can beat Cotto, but if he can pull it off it will be the upset of the year!!!
My money is on Gomez, I'm sure I'm getting pretty good odds.
Stranger things have happened.
Sorry buddy but they are mexicant's. anyway, a fight is a fight, years of watching boxing have shown us that one punch can change it all., It how you take that punch. We've seen that Cotto took alot of hard shots from Judah and Mosley, Gomez has taken shots from who? Mafredo? and the rest of the "contenders" please.
...it's tough to bet against a Mexican...I mean, after all, they are mexi-cans, not mexi-can'ts...I thought Edwin Rosario was unbeatable...then he fought Chavez...
Kabuki Joe
Not bad, true.
..Keep in mind I just try and plug your impressive knowledge of Cotto to use against him whenever the opportunity presents itself.. :firedevil
Unfortunately, I can't always twist the facts. :banghead:
If only more people had that attitude...
Last July this guy was a nobody in the boxing world and not even a year later he's walking around like some big swingin' dick based off of wins against 2fighters who aren't even in the top 10 of the division. After Cotto breaks him I doubt we'll be seeing much of Gomez. How he got this opportunity over other prospects still baffles me.
Why did Manfredo get to fight Calzaghe? Why did Mora get a title shot for Taylor and Forrest?
