Why Would Alfonso Gomez Beat Miguel Cotto?

If Cotto does not beat this bum he ain't shit. I see Gomez like I saw De la Hoya against Hopkins, on the floor and in much pain!!!!:boxing:

On the real though, are you picking Gomez to beat Cotto? Im sure Cotto is going to win but Gomez may bother him for 3 round the first 3. Everybody is dangerous in the first three rounds.

Gomez does nothing well enough to trouble Cotto in this fight. Cotto should be able to control the whole fight do lots of damage with the jab and body work and TKO Gomez by 7 or 8. Everyone needs to get real and remember Cotto has fought a ton of competition who were heads above Gomez and he crushed many of them or made them quit. Compare Gomez to one of Cotto's past opponents for perspective, I would say he is no better than maybe Randall Bailey without much of the power. Gomez has little chance.

However, Gomez is taller/longer than Cotto and has a good jab himself, plus, he likes to slip his opponent's jab and counter with the right a lot, so Cotto can't carelessly put out his jab all the time. It remains to be seen if his stuff will be effective against a fighter on Cotto's level though. We're going to be seeing that at work, no doubt. It's one of the things Gomez can do at the world class level..

Gomez's most damaging single punch is the left hook to the body. He did say that in interviews that Cotto's weakness is his chin, but he also said that ppl didn't go to the body on Cotto like they should, and that he planned to mix it up(which he usually does anyway). Cotto will have to be wary of punches to both the head and body. It will at least be competitive. Gomez has good all-around skills, is very durable, and though his power is only average at best, he is maybe the best combination puncher that Cotto will have faced(Shane should have this title, but his combination punching has gone out the window in his old age). He also throws every punch in the book at a high volume(around 85-90 punches per round even when he's taking punishment), including the uppercut, which Cotto has yet to defend against well. Indeed, good points. This has as much to do with Cotto's vulnerability as it does any ability, or lack-there-of in Gomez.. Can Gomez exploit Cotto's vulnerability? That's the question.

I don't see why people would say so. Miguel Cotto is undefeated, but hasn't been protected like alot of undefeated fighters. He's fought guys like Shane Mosley, Ricardo Torres, Zab Judah, Carlos Quintana, and Paulie Malignaggi. He's gained a wealth of experience as a young champion and has become a complete fighter. Contrast that with Alfonso Gomez, whose biggest wins have been Peter Manfredo, Ben Tackie, and Arturo Gatti. The Manfredo fight was a 5 round fight. Ben Tackie and Arturo Gatti were both beyond finished and I'm surprised either was sanctioned to fight. You can point to Cotto's chin as a reason why Gomez is gonna win, but a puncher's chance means little when you're up against world talent. Cotto has shown a much tougher beard at 147 so I'd forget the Corley and Torres fights for a little. The only guy who rocked Cotto at 147 was Zab Judah and Judah is a much sharper puncher. Alfonso Gomez looked like Roberto Duran beating on a smaller Arturo Gatti, but that version of Gatti was a sad imitation of "Thunder", a shadow of a man. Gatti was stationary and didn't have the legs to move around or defend himself anymore. Do you think Cotto would lay against the ropes and let Gomez measure him for a haymaker? Gomez isn't particularly fast, strong, or skilled. He's going to be a sitting target for Cotto's body attack. Class shows in boxing, and I think that will be the main difference when these guys fight. I hear you, AS, but one thing I have to disagree with you on is the "much tougher beard at 147" and "significantly better chin" stuff you said in another thread. It might be a little bit better, but not considerably so.. Whatsoever. It is seemingly somewhat better though, I do agree. Some people would point to rounds 9-12 of the Mosley fight as another indication of potential flaws in Cotto's disposition.. Pressure cooking.. Something Gomez might be capable of. Myself, Kayjay, Gerardofpr and a few other folks have been saying for some time now that the way to get Cotto is to jump on his ass and stay on his ass. In very explicit terms Kayjay and myself were saying that Mosley needed to do this at the first bell. Unfortunately, he didn't do so until his father Jack starting yelling in between rounds 8 and 9.. Also, you say Cotto hasn't been protected. He has, at different points. He's been protected from punchers all the way from Torres to Judah. And when TR put him in with Judah, and then Mosley, they were picking carefully and maybe even saying "fuck it, let's see what our investment can do.." He's not very confident in Marquez's prospects here. I think if Marquez would've taken the immediate rematch like he should have, he would've beaten Pacquiao. Instead he went to Indonesia to lose for $20,000, which was probably more than training expenses and travel for his entourage. The favourite will win, the underdog will lose, just like Pacquiao vs JMM. Cotto is a good fighter though and I see Margarito giving him some trouble but not a bum like Gomez. Again, who will win Mayweather or Cotto?

I like his left hook to the body, but he doesn't bend his knees enough when he throws it. He reaches with his back straight and exposes himself when he throws it. You can't stand straight up with a guy like Cotto, you give him way too much target. If Cotto uses his jab, I think he can take away most of what Gomez tries to do. When Gomez is most effective (or really, the only time he's effective) is when he's given free reign to choose what he wants to do. I can see him having a lot of trouble setting up his punches with Cotto. Good posts, kid. Keep 'em up
