It was his 130-150 run.. 2006-2010
Young manny was very raw and sloppy, but had good natural fighter instincts and mentality, and also good handspeed and power. Manny basically got by with fighting spirit, speed and power. But lack of technique and overall sloppiness did get him knocked out a few times early. Good enough power and spirit to score upset knockouts for 108 title.
Once manny got stateside with Freddie roach circa 2000/01, manny gained some technique and became sharper but was still a really limited fighter, just a jab, jab, straight left type fighter. But he had a great jab, jab, straight left and he threw it constantly averaging 100 punches a round.
Many felt Barrera would expose manny as being one dimensional, but couldn't stand up to the fury of the jabs and straight lefts.
Marquez was the first guy to get wrecked by manny but survive and actually did expose manny's limited style.
Afterwards, this is when roach and manny kept hyping they were turning manny into a more versatile, 2-handed fighter for his 130 clash with morales. "Manila Ice" was supposed to be this new right hook punch for manny that was devastating.
But morales took manny's best shots, smiled, and turned it into a war, and manny quickly abandoned new style and resorted back to his style in Barrera fight, but unlike Barrera and Marquez, morales could take manny's power shots and not get dropped. Morales having the better technique, outboxed manny to a grueling decision.
This is when a lightbulb went off in manny's head, as the Marquez and morales fights had proven to him that at the world class elite level, these dudes are incredibly hard to stop, so he needed to listen to Freddie and really use his speed and power to box guys setting up the power shots, instead of just being a buzzsaw of straight lefts.
