The CNN coverage could certainly help. I don't think the hype is close to Mayweather-Mosley. I haven't had anyone call me up to try and watch the fight. They normally do when there's a big fight coming up (casual fans + friends who normally watch MMA). I do know of a couple fight parties being planned. My guess for PPV sales is 800-900k.
I'm sure it was said somewhere in these 15 pages. The 4 million was a number thrown out there by GBP to generate hype. Nobody knows if GBP expected 2 million buys. We don't have any real way to gauge how much money was spent on promotion or how much money was really made. The fight was in no way a flop. A flop would be a situation where they either made very little money or were in the negative. If they truly expected 2 million, maybe you can label the fight a slight disappointment.
I haven't studied Calderon to the extent needed to discuss his style and who said Barrera was a pure boxer....isn't the Mexican style of fighting well defined as not being pure boxing?
so, you would describe Barrera as being a classic "Mexican style" boxer?
It's also common knowledge that HGH use is almost pointless without being stacked with an anabolic steroid and anabolic steroids are detectable in urine. There's no substance an athlete could cycle in a 20 day period and then let his body return to normal and take the tests... Example: The usual time it takes for a bodybuilder's body to return to homeostasis after a steroid cycle is usually the same amount of time he had on the cycle, so time on + same time off = back to normal. You wouldn't want to compete while the substance is clearing your body because your natural levels of hormone would be almost non-existent and you'd actually physically perform worse than if never taken anything.
I agree. Here's a quote from an article saying exactly what you stated
"Recombinant hGH (rhGH), when given to GH-deficient
individuals, has been found to increase exercise
time and VO2max after 6 months of treatment .
Increased body muscle mass, decreased body fat, increased
cardiac output, and improved wound healing has
been described . In contrast, no significant effects
on muscle strength or muscle protein synthesis
have been reported in controlled clinical trials of healthy
non-exercising young men or athletes given supraphysiological
doses of rhGH . ....Reportedly, it seems that athletes use hGH for long
periods of time with supratherapeutic doses or in combination
with other doping substances such as AAS. hGH
appears to act synergistically when used in tandem with
steroids, thus having an effect, albeit indirect, on muscle
anabolism and athletic performance ."

Here's a little HGH info for you taken from Barroso, Schamasch, and Rabin
"Detection of GH abuse in sport: Past, present and future". From the Journal of Growth Hormone & IGF Research Volume 19 Issue 4. Published May 2009.
If you want any more legit information, do a search on pubmed. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/guide/
If you're not able to access an article, let me know, I might be able to get it for you.
"The development of hGH-specific methods for anti-doping purposes, however, has constituted a significant scientific and logistical challenge for the anti-doping authorities. Despite the availability of multiple assays for quantification of hGH for clinical and research purposes, all have proven unsuitable for anti-doping applications. The structural and biochemical similarities between rhGH and the major endogenous 22-kDa isoform, the pulsatile manner of hGH release and its short half-life in circulation, and the influence of exercise and nutrition on hGH plasma levels, among other factors, contribute to the difficulty of detecting the abuse of hGH as a doping agent and . Similarly, many of the currently available tests for some of the hGH-dependent markers (e.g. IGF-I) have proven to be unreliable for doping analyses, thereby requiring extensive validation studies of existing commercial assays or the application of novel approaches towards the development of well-characterised and accurate assays."
The tickets are ridiculously expensive. The experience of just being in Vegas during a big fight weekend, and feeling the energy of the crowd is worth it. If you're a real fan, you'll get there early and watch a bunch of the undercard fights. If you want to risk it, you can try to buy cheap tickets the day of or before the fight from brokers trying to get rid of them. Try going to some smaller shows, a little more than a hundred can get you up close and personal which is fun also.
Really funny interview. It did seem like Floyd was trying to let Roach know he was selling the fight and it wasn't personal, Roach didn't want to hear any of it. I got worried when Floyd put his hand on Roach's shoulder, haha.
Marquez Diaz was a good fight with Diaz pulling out the early rounds and Marquez finishing him off, but if we compared that fight with the Izzy and Rafael fights, it's in a class below. There's definitely a chance this fight can match or top Marquez Diaz.
Might just have to book my flight now while it's cheap. I hope it's at 144 or below. I don't think Marquez's chin will be any better at such a high weight, we'll see I guess.
Keep in mind JMM was 140 in his fight with Diaz, 144 isn't much more, weight isn't going to be an issue for JMM. I think this is a very bad matchup for Mayweather because PBF likes it when fighters come to him. JMM is an extremely smart fighter, an excellent counterpuncher, he's got great accuracy and beautiful combos, and he can be very active if needed (although that won't be needed, PBF is pretty much the opposite of an active fighter).
PBF is a fast potshotter, extremely good defense, and an excellent counterpuncher. His biggest weakness is his lack of activity and I think JMM is going to take full advantage of that, he is going to force PBF to be more active.
This is such a bad matchup for PBF, I feel bad for him, this shouldn't be his first fight back. A fight with Cotto would have been a much better matchup for him. I wanted to see PBF vs Pacquiao later this year but I think JMM will beat him.
A agree with a lot of your analysis, but still think the issue is Marquez's chin. JMM is going to be forced to stalk mayweather, as you said, and carefully pick his shots and throw some of his combos inside. I think Mayweather will catch him and put him down a few times. We'll see if he can get up. Marquez showed a lot of weakness early against Diaz and will probably lose a majority of rounds. Hopefully we see Floyd come out more aggresive than previous fights being put in this situation with a lighter man with a suspect chin in Marquez. I really like Marquez, but the weight is gonna bother him.
I was really impressed by Ward for most of the fight, he has some skills. When he was trading in the first couple rounds he was fluid, and showed a lot of variety in his game. The last couple rounds were boring, but he's more exciting than P. Will
I was very impressed by Ward. He showed a lot tonight. He showed he can take a good punch, and looked great for the first half of the fight. He dominated the second half, but did hold too much. He smothered some of his punches, and whenever he hurt Miranda he didn't follow up. I felt like he really disappointed the crowd the last two rounds and could've finished it much better.
damn.... I feel so bad for JT. I keep hoping he'll redeem himself each fight. I guess it's not as bad this time because he was losing on the cards anyway. He needs to retire. All these KOs can't be good for you.
I'm out on the East coast right now, and can't make the fight. But I've been making calls to let some casual fans know how good a fight it's going to be. I know quite a few people who are going. It's great having big boxing shows in the bay. Ward gets on the news every once in a while, but he isn't a big deal. If he wins this fight, I'm sure he'll be getting a lot bigger.
Nonito Donaire
Juan Manuel Lopez (less so more recently, since he has shown some vulnerability)
Valero
Ali Funeka
Joan Guzman (haven't heard anything about him since he had all those weight issues)
Nate Campbell (kind of)
Tim Bradley
Sergio Martinez
Paul Williams
Man. This thread started off well. Every PAC/PBF thread goes straight to steroids/xylocaine. Any way, I was worried at first when I saw Pac go to the ropes, esp. because it seemed like Cotto could handle Pacs speed at first and was landing. When I saw him tighten up his guard and lean into the ropes I felt better. Like someone said, he's been doing the exact same thing in sparring for years.
Hopefully he gets a cut of the gate and PPV. Even though 1 million is more than he would make fighting the collazo's and zab's of the welterweight division, he deserves a better cut.
if manny beats clottey
pac/may will happen late this year.
Idk why people wanted this on 3/13 that would of been only 3 months to promote the fight
a fight like floyd/manny needs 5-6 months of promoting. Its bigger then the superbowl or the nba finals.
Yeah. When I first heard about the fight being "signed" I couldn't believe how smoothly everything went. No way it would go that smooth, and get done that fast. I have the same feeling about Mayweather vs. Mosley, but I'm really hoping it pulls through. Pac vs May in September sounds about right, but I'm hoping Shane pulls the upset.
Mosley is definitely past it. He was down on the cards against Mayorga. He was able to capitalize against Margarito because Margarito is slow. He still has his power + a chin, but his speed is down. He's going to have to catch May with some hard shots to have a chance, no way he wins on the cards. A wide UD for Mayweather is likely, but lets hope Shane pulls it off.
