A few weeks ago, I heard many people complaining that this fight had no buzz and that the promotion was a dud. There were predictions of 700K PPV buys. Arena was about half-sold. That was in late August, right before the first ep of 24/7.
At the time, this was not a fight that seemed to capture the mainstream, and only had moderate interest among the hardcores.
What made this fight "catch fire"? Was it that Mayweather family feud on the first ep of 24/7? Was it Oscar's confessional interview?
DO YOU FEEL THAT THERE HAS BEEN A GOOD PROMOTIONAL PLAN FOR THIS FIGHT?

no this fight isnt bigger than expected, just ask MGM Grand who has been calling up local vegas VIP's to give away fight tickets!!!
had they had the canelo fight here in vegas too, the gate would've sold out, but they didn't want all the seats to be sold at a lower dollar, so they kept that fight in LA for the larger gate, and tried going top dollar for the gate in vegas, but as true to the historical record, floyd doesn't draw a crowd to his fights, he does get the PPV's though, thats in the record, although it's usually who floyd is fighting that is the real draw other than the mosley fight, which people were interested in seeing him fight someone that they wanted to see him fight, YEARS AGO, the curiosity was still there, but for fights like these, it's a flip of the coin.
bottom line, mgm is giving away tickets................ can't be that big..... but like i said, the promoters were trying to capitalize on higher priced seating at the mgm which screwed the pooch a bit i think........
Legitimate Mexican contender vs loud mouth Floyd on Mexican independence weekend... of course it sold well. Throw in there Canelo and Morales on the card... Golden Boy is taking over.
I just realized that everybody on that card is Mexican except for Floyd:arabia:

Canelo fought on Mexican Independence weekend last year. Shane Mosley was also on that card.
Remind me what that sold...

It's got huge. When i first heard about the fight i treated it more as a tune-up for Mayweather. Since all the promotion and 24/7 episodes it's now a blockbuster fight which some people think Ortiz has a decent shot of winning.
Well done to the promoters.
Yep. Thanks. 17,000 is a TRUE sellout.
What concert and event promoters do is release 10,000, sell them all, then call that a sell-out. And then they trickle out more tix as time goes on.
yep and some people believe that is a sell out
yep.
just look at this.

But fights rarely sell out. Even the so-called sellouts of Pac's fights that are claimed are not sell-outs.
If you want to see what MGM Grand Garden REALLY holds, check out Oscar-Floyd.
For example, for the Cotto-Margarito fight, they blocked off 40% of the arena and called that a sellout.

Well HBO and GBP came out the gate saying this was going to be the best promoted fight ever, so really nobody should be surprised because if HBO is good at one thing it is hyping people up.
Some people were skeptical because it wasn't wall to wall, but it has been building.
Speaking for myself I have U-Verse and they have their own preview for the fight I have seen it like 25 times in 3 or 4 weeks.
Still not surprised because this was always going to happen because HBO had to outdo Showtime, that extra incentive is showing now.
i thought the promotion was good, and that the comments about it being a "dud" were just the usual opposing comments from the nay-sayers. . .
only thing im hugely disappointed with is the fact that morales vs. matthyssee is no longer on the card. . . but injuries happen and the show must go on. . . still can't wait for mayweather/ortiz. not much longer till card starts!
So am I. That bummed me out.
But I at least give the promotional team credit for TRYING to put together a dope card. Top to bottom.
A hardcore boxing fan wouldn't concern himself with being swayed by promotion. In fact, the hardcore boxing fans I know have contempt for hype, but realize that its necessary for the sport.
The only people who I know who are really concerned with how well a fight is hyped are casual fans who pay to see it and promoters who cash the checks.
He wasn't talking about "being swayed". He is talking about assessing the magnitude of the buzz.
Please understand the difference.
We aren't swayed. We watch the fights anyway.
Yeah, that's what I mean. I don't think the fight was bigger than everyone thought but I just think it's the fight hype especially towards the end. I bet when the fight does eventually arise, it'll be exactly how Mayweather-Mosley turned out - i.e. shows Floyd's weaknesses with scary moments for him although no knockdown, Ortizs' power but with Floyd ultimately winning a UD confortably. If anything, that is my prediction otherwise I'd expect a Floyd 10 round TKO.

PPV here is being offered at around $10 and it seems still only a few is buying...
Please post the link on where to buy this PPV for $10, I'm gonna keep bothering you if you don't post or send me a link.
I think the promotion was good it was on CNN. ESPN has talked about it constantly its also on non boxing websites so I think they did a hellvua job. :headbang:
