I don't think he was a cherry picker per se. I think he looked at the situation with Golden Boy and how he felt he wasn't being compensated commensurate with his skills and then became very strategic as to how he selected his opponents to shift the dollars in his favor.
I think he woke up and realized that the game had changed so that compensation was no longer based on merit and responded accordingly.
Why try to slam Canelo for daring to go fight a champ at 175?? GGG said it was all easy but never dared to prove it
If Canelo secured a belt at 175, of course he would. It's all about Canelo money at this point for GGG.
I think that given he was looking at Murata next it should be pretty clear everyone that he's looking to cash out. Now that Murata is off the table I don't think he risks losing another opportunity at Canelo by risking a loss to Charlo.
That said I don't know what legitimate options are there for him that don't have risk.
I feel next month to be honest GGG may be next
What are your thoughts, post and discuss
You know I hope that Canelo is deliberately cutting for speed, but I have to say he really looks like he's off the gear. I hope he doesn't get pulverized.
But I agree Canelo closing the door on Golovkin would feel like something.
This was a really stupid move for Wilder. If Povetkin wins then Wilder loses a big payday. If AJ wins then Wilder is the B side for sure. They didn't think this through.
Floyd took it in the rear to get the signature win against Oscar and then could dictate terms. IMO that's what Wilder needed to do.
What do you mean if Joshua wins he's the A side for sure? He's the A side for sure now. Wilder is a weak B side.
I'm not saying that Joshua isn't the A side now, what I am saying is that a win over Povetkin makes the gap even bigger, weakens Wilder's negotiating position.
He is a little slower so on an elite fighter like Canelo he can't load up on his punches. You have to think that 3 years ago he would have done better. But then Canelo has improved in that time as well.
If he weighs the same but has 3 pounds less muscle he must have 3 pounds more fat and I sure don't see much fat on him. If he has more speed he should have more punching power. If a punch is thrown with good leverage the faster the punch the harder it is.
That is not how boxing mechanics work. The power comes from the legs/torso. If he's faster it's because he has less mass to move and he will not hit as hard because he has less muscle to generate force.
You're also mistaken about the body fat. You are not taking into account the water cut to make weight. He could be the same % bodyfat but had to cut less because he has less muscle and weighed less to begin with.
So. What you're saying is since GBP owns Vegas it's okay canelo gets the decision despite the fact he didnt earn it. Its definitely okay because we knew this too. So you also think it's fair that GGG could only win by KO?
That kind of thinking is just ludacris and to me that is the definition of robbery. Obtaining something you didnt deserve by other means.
I too scored GGG 7-5 and so did pretty much every major boxing publication anywhere.
Same as the first fight. Big drama show.
I think that given how much better Canelo did, there was no way Golovkin was getting the decision. It may be ludacris thinking and we might not like it, but to ignore the realities of the fight game, is just not how it is.
The reality of the fight game is that some, albeit small portion of the victory occurs outside of the ring, via the narrative and influence. This isn't something new.
Hard to argue against this for Canelo. He'll be able to demand a bigger cut now, Golovkin is probably the biggest fight for him. Golovkin will continue to slow down and Canelo will likely get even stronger. 2 controversial decisions will make for good marketing.
Golovkin will likely want it as he can't make this kind of coin anywhere else.
I think the finances support it and let's face it boxing is all about money now.
I had Golovkin winning by 2 rounds, BUT I was very impressed with Canelo and don't think this was a robbery. Given the economics behind Canelo we knew that any close rounds would favor Canelo. I think it is fair to say that Canelo did better than expected and that Golovkin has slipped and this was reflected in the decision.
He looks to me to be about 3-4 lbs smaller in terms of muscle mass, he's not as thick. He'll have less power but he didn't have to cut as much to make weight so maybe he'll have better stamina. And he should be lighter on fight night so that may translate into more stamina and more speed.
I think the biggest difference was when they faced off. Last year he looked bigger than Golovkin, this year he looks markedly smaller.
I think it'll come down to whether he can keep Golovkin off him.
I guess it would depend on if they have judges in the tank or if they suspect that their opponent has judges in the tank. Very hard to answer the question today with some of the score cards we've seen.
Even though I favor Golovkin and think this time he wins by KO, I think that if Canelo could come in with speed and stamina and clearly out box Golovkin for a unanimous decision that would indeed be something.
While I have a favorite, first and foremost I'm a fan of boxing.
Best of his era, but it was a weak era at middleweight. For legacy he should have fought Ward, for money he made the right moves holding out for the Canelo paydays.
Manny was embarrassed the first time and this version has no chance what so ever. He did good to get the KO and get himself another good payday and a few more fights. And he deserves it he's been good to boxing.
Well that was the whole point of this fight, was to extend for Manny, because of the drama that would come from what should have been viewed as a highly predictable outcome.
Cotto did the same and got a few more paychecks. How it goes.
