Let Fury beat Usyk, he won’t, and then beat AJ and a few other top rated contenders. Then let’s talk. To me Fury is a huge but overweight heavyweight with an awkward, near comical, style.
That we see things very differently about all of that is the kindest way I can put it.

Fury retired. Retirement ends his lineal reign. The bout between Usyk and AJ was thus for that vacant lineal title. Usyk won and is now the new lineal champion.

If that's the case shouldn't Holmes have been recognized as lineal since the Norton fight? That's when personally recognize him, but I've seen many who didn't consider him lineal until he beat Ali.

Please correct if I'm wrong but the timeline seems off. If you go with that logic the "fight off" (elimination bout) for the championship would not have included Usyk. Uysk wasn't in the HW mix when Fury first "retired." Was he?

It would have been AJ and someone, but who?

Either way we assume AJ wins that fight and then loses it to Uysk and there you are, you got a champion.

But you can't call Josuha-Uysk an elimination fight, it came too late. You got to claim AJ was the champ going in.

                Well it is the case.

As an example Ring recognized Ali as the heavyweight champion until he retired in 1970. The resulting bout between Frazier and Ellis then became for the lineal title. Frazier won. Ali when he fought Frazier was as the former champion.

Holmes was a “different” case as I look at it. He proved himself the best by beating the leading contender Norton prior to Ali’s retirement AND beat Ali himself, no longer the champion but former title holder. History is sometimes not cut and dry and must be pieced together the best one can. Holmes was by far and away the most worthy by the strength of these two victories. No other contender had this level of scalps.

When Jeffries returned to fight Johnson he was a former lineal champion as he had retired five years prior. Johnson had won the lineal title from Burns in 1908. Johnson retained his lineal title by beating Jeffries.

Fury announced his retirement earlier this year so relatively recently. Lineal title was as such vacant when AJ and Usyk last fought. Usyk won. He is now the Ring and lineal champion.
