Hmmm. Carpentier is not much discussed. A small light heavy who fought in almost every division. Foster was large for the LH division, at least tall. The frog will have his work laid out before him, unless he is quickly laid out himself. I have the feeling he was a lot better than we have ever given him credit for. There has to be a reason Rickard got away with making the match without too much squawking from the public. There probably was some squawking we are not much aware of these days, or at least I conjecture so. Someone surely had to complain that "Dempsey was fighting a midget."

Carpentier trained in private to disguise how small he was compared to Dempsey.I think him a massively overated champion.
Foster by a solid decision, if not late stoppage. Just do not like the way the styles mesh for Carpentier, he waits on the outside with his gloves low looking to snipe a big shot. That don't work out well against a big guy with a legendary jab like Foster.
If the refs let them wrestle and grab on the inside for extended time, like they often did in the 20s, then maybe Carpentier could neutralize Foster some. But he'd have to pay a heck of a price getting there.
15 rds who wins?
I think Foster ko's the Frenchman in about 8rds.
humm? Carpentier certainly lost to some of the best lol: |A virtual whos who! Tunney, Loughrin, Gibbins...Dempsey. Foster's losses were to heavyweights, Foley, Jones, Terrell and of course Frazier & Ali. Carpentier one would have to assume was susceptable to being being overpowered. Its just in the cards when we look... Foster was big and heavy handed. I would agree that he Ko's the Frenchman fairly easily.
If you look at his record you see a pattern. Excellent fighter with perhaps a bit of Del Boy disease lol. Competative with somem incredible fighters... but lost to the likes of Tunney, Gibbons, Loughrin... Only beat the battling Sikh once...

I think Carpentier, being French and all... was used as "that fighter" to sound like a knowlegable fan. You know... I mean I love Escargot as much as many... and when one says "Escargot" you can forget what a snail looks like lol. So imagine in a discussion some pretender saying "ahem and what of Carpentier, the Orchid man!" ohh lala!! Carpentier was not even the original flower guy! that might well be the chyrsinthium man Joe Choynski, and Choyinski was imo a much better fighter. Mike McCallum, who was a tremendous fighter, also went through a stage where his nanme was brought up as a way for some casual to pretend they knew the sport.
Carpentier was exotic and apparently handsome. He was good enough to fight with the best and lose.

Rickard sold the press that Carpentier had a secret punch called the 'evil eye.' He would land the punch once in the second round. It made Dempsey look up, nothing more.
Later, Tunney would claim watching Dempsey eat that right hand convinced him he would one day beat Dempsey with it.
The press bought the 'evil eye' story because it was in everyone's best interest and the next day over emphasized the effect of the right hand, claiming it almost put Dempsey down.
Great promoter was Rickard.
IMO A few years later Carpentier gave a growing, bigger Tunney a difficult time, (film is available) he is by no means a walk over for Foster.
