Carlos is correct, the gameplan is to test the opponent's chin early on, get him out quick if you can, and if they withstand it, then settle into the fight.
Omar wasn't spent or tired after that initial burst. He almost KO'd the dude 2 minutes into round 1, and got his jab working and landed crushing body shots the 2nd half of the 1st round.
Notice how with some corner instruction he came out very calm and controlled in the 2nd round. The commentators described the KO punch: "That is the perfect way you throw it, that is textbook stuff."
For the doubters, remember that this guy still only has less than 15 rounds of experience!
I guess Sheridan isn't at ringside? Sounds like they are adding his commentary audio and there is a big difference in the live audio and his volume.
Amy Hayes is as bad as she ever was..
Boxrec posted the Silvio Branco result, he won by UD6.
I think the Armenian crowd was bigger last time when he fought Esputian, but they did come out for sure.. All I know is every single Armenian chick was HOT. Will let you know about the video..
Atleast Telefutura records 2 off-tv fights and shows them in rebroadcast the a week or two later on sister channel. Versus crew hit the OFF button at 10PM sharp and was in the bar by 10:30.
Vanes fight was at 10pm just after the broadcast ended..
VS didnt record it, but I did. I'll see if I can post it here.
Division just quit, didn't want anymore, sent his trainer to tell ref to stop the fight.
BTW, boxingscene.com had fight report before fightnews.com ;-)
Laurence Cole is son of Dickie Cole, who is Texas Boxing Commissioner.
Dickie was also a referee for many years and handed down the insurance company to his son. I believe it is one of only two insurance companies that insure boxing cards in the US.
Referees get paid according to the profile of the bout, i.e. more for TV than off TV and even more for PPV. Coincidence that Larry gets all the high profile bouts?
There are much worse refs in TX and he got the main event last night partially because he's an NABF official.
I dont think he's a horrible ref., but the family's got ethics issues for sure.
Kenny's out..
Derwin for now..
Could bring in Danny Smith..
IMO, the whole situation is stupid and will make the fight alot closer than it should be.
Also, on subject of punching power, earlier in his career Juan wasnt turning over on his punches very well, was slapping guys, all the way thru the Lorcey fight. When he fought Irwin he started to correct this and ever since he's been pummelling guys and making them go backwards with each punch.
Here's a video I made of Juan working out:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3321926094007782858
It opens with a drill practicing his power body shots. Note this was during training for Freitas, hence Shields is training him.
you should also keep your eyes out for two other guys Dominic Wade and Lenard Lane who could also make noise at 147 and 154
L.Lane is actually making 140lbs now and fighting on ESPN FnF in Cleveland. He is Omar's teamate as well. Also, part of the Henry, Lane rotation are Jermell and Jermall Charlo, both very good 147lb prospects.
Omar is solid at 154lbs and will remain there for quite awhile. He may go to middleweight eventually but not in the next few years..
As for the Porter comparision, at this point, Porter has many many more rounds on an elite amateur level than Henry, so he has a big advantage in being much more seasoned.
You cant really take anything from their pro bouts so far for comparision. Style-wise, they both have above average speed and power. I dont think anyone can say at this point which is the better pure boxer, and both have good defense, with Porter being slightly better at blocking punches. Henry has a very good body attack, but Porter's compact stance may negate that partially.
As for Omar being overly aggressive and leaning over his front foot, well 6 1st round KO's in his first 7 bouts will make you look like that.
He's better. He doesnt switch hit, he has better defense, utilizes his guard and uses his arms to deflect, not head movement like Andre. Is a little taller and leaner than brother.
here's a pic I posted awhile back..

Dirrells skipping rope
Not a great shot.. Taken Summer of 2005 in Houston, TX.
Andre on left & Anthony on right.
Both were 4-0 at the time.

Jack Loew is cool. He started to talk shit after Manny Steward said that Kelly couldnt go far because he had an amateur boxing trainer. I woulda taken offense too.

Scroll down about half-way, 8/31/07 and find Marcus Johnson vs. Danny Jacobs sparring footage. Also Danny Jacobs vs. Keith Thurman.
Marcus Johnson signed with Don King out of amateurs, and since DK doesnt have TV dates that show undercards, you havent seen him, except maybe on the Cory Spinks internet broadcast.
He's recently signed with Lou DiBella so hopefully we get him on TV more.
Johnson lost at age 18 to Ward in the 2004 USA Olympic Trial finals & box-off.
Omar is a full time college student so he cannot leave town for a long training camp.
Ronnie Shields is his trainer, but J. Johns works very closely with him.
Omar's next fight is in Corpus Christi 10/17 and may be televised by one of the Azteca networks.
In Houston at his own gym he is sparring with Kermit Cintron and many other good figthers like the Charlo twins and Lanard Lane.
I've posted interviews here of Christy Martin and Akondaye Fountain.
I think if a reporter sees a talented female boxer in the gym, they will do an interview. The problem is the talent is dissproportionate and the women aren't on TV.
If you want women's boxing content go to wban.
BTW, women's amateur boxing championships currently taking place in China.. AIBA.org
USA not doing so hot..
Keep an eye on Ireland's Katie Taylor (132lbs)
I know he needed some kind of nose surgury that had to do with breathing that affected his stamina.. And has had issues outside the ring in his past few fights that affected his focus.. But when he fought in denmark and when he just moved here is 100% focus was boxing and was alot more dedicated.. I think he has much potential to do well..

That's what happens when you dont do road work and have half-assed gym workouts..
He had the nose surgery and the results in his subsequent fights were the same or worse, stamina wise.
Marcus Johnson is on this off-TV undercard versus Donte Craig.
Marcus has been helping Chris Henry get ready for Diaconu, and could be in line for an eliminator late this year.
Actually, it sounded like HBO is the one pushing for the rematch... It would probably stand on it's own as a main event on BAD.
My prediction, Juarez wants Houston, John wants LA. They compromise and fight in San Antonio. LMAO
WTF?!?!
Did I read this correctly? This article says that:
The Chinese allowed two women who had held PROFESSIONAL world titles to regain their amateur status so as to compete in the Olympics in 2012.
How is that allowed or even ethical???
Off-TV results:
Welterweights: Gerardo "TinTin" Ibarra (1-0) TKO2 over Jesus Villarreal (2-5-1)
Light Heavyweights: Alfonso "El Tigre" Lopez (9-0) TKO5 over Theo Krueger (8-7)
