awesome fights on March 3rd
will be watching the Marquez vs Vazquez fight instead of the other...I'm hoping an undercard can stagger the fights long enough so that I can do some channel hopping :)
I was actually in PI in a marketplace of all places when this fight was happening and when Pac koed Morales, we celebrated like they just announced the end of world war two...lol...We love Pacquiao, Threre's no denying that...
Mike Tyson: three hundred million dollars
Lennox Lewis: I miss you now
Riddick Bowe: Futch was a genius
Muhammed Ali: G.O.A.T.
Sonny Liston: phantom punch? Ali Rematch
Joe Frazier: Greatest Philly fighter ever
Feel good movie of the year. I laughed, then I cried, then I laughed some more....Raging bull's got nothing on this...I lab you pelepens...lol..I'm kinda hungry for donats now...lol
BTW, I didn't know that there was once a promising light heavyweight in the PI? Emong? Can't seem to find him on boxrec? lol
BHops is too old and Calzaghe's workrate will overwhelm him. A younger Glen Johnson would have been an interesting fight for Joe with a move up in weight, although with his handspeed, I can see a replay of the Lacy fight. A prime RJJ would have been a true test, but we'll never know...
Well keep defending him, Pac will never have the same set of balls like Morales and Barrera.
balls as in comparing quality of opposition? I have major respect for Morales and Barrera, but both didn't seem to want no part of JMM...Barrera vs Marquez is about four years or more overdue. Who has Pacquiao ducked? Barrera, Marquez, Morales in less than two years...that's some big cajones...
I haven't seen Solis in action, but Pac is a bitch for running for mayor. He could easily have done this after his career in the ring. His expiration date in the ring is short, considering his fighting style. He can't turn back the clock. His peak is now...He should be looking for the best possible fights out there. Valero, Soto or the lightweights..Casa, baby bull, Freitas. So many good fights out there for him...
He's not my favorite, an understatement, although in fairness to him, his notebook is very informative, is massive in length, and covers just about every division.
My dislike for Raffy started way back during his days at usatoday and has carried over...he too biased IMO. There are boxers outside the US of A...
What I'll remember forever about this fight was how quiet the crowd was, if this had been in Vegas, the reaction would have been insane. Wonder if this worked in Buster's favor? I think there were six people screaming when Iron Mike went down and that included Lamps and Merchant...lol
So now he has balls for running? He doesn't have balls, he just believes his fame will get him votes which is why he's running. Manny needs to let Arum know that this no-namer doesn't cut it. Humberto Soto is the perfect guy for him to take on. Maybe I'm just being blind and all this is because of Arum, and if so......lets all kill Arum!!!!
I don't believe the contract has been signed yet, and there has been talk in the Pacquiao camp that Solis as an opponent is a disappointment for Pac. I'll give Pacman some slack if he wants a tuneup and fight some unknown, but his time to become a legend in the sport is running...
Arum and the politics of boxing...
Pacquiao and politics...I don't give a shit about that...
Watching it right now with black bars on the top and bottom of my tv screen...WTF :D
I have more respect for MAB after this fight. I thought Marquez would win this one convincingly. I seem to never learn NOT to easily dismiss MAB...
If it's against David Diaz for the lightweight crown, I highly doubt it will be PPV. I hope the fight happens in Chicago, I'll be watching it live if it does...
Pavlik might be heavy handed, but he's too slow. Calzaghe's hands will be too quick for Kelly to handle. Zertuche, although not one to be described as speedy was getting his lumps in and was actually competitive for a few rounds. Like the Lacy fight, this should be an easy night for Joe.
Wins against top competition heads my gauge. Were the best possible competition faced or did he duck anyone? Ninety nine percent of the great ones have a loss or losses in their records, what separates them from ordinary is how they've responded after the loss. At what weight the fighter started his career and at what weight he retires is also a major factor. Roberto Duran is a major example....
Possible, but improbable. Wlad's a heck of a boxer, but his KO losses have haunted him inside the ring and it shows. Put him in with someone durable with KO power and a different fighter shows up. His training with Stew has him clinching way too much IMO, but it's a safer fight for him. From the improvements Peter shown in the Toney fight, a rematch would be a tougher fight for Wlad than their first encounter. Vitale will have some major ring rust coming back. I would love to see him against Brewster....Technically, Wlad's still the better boxer. Mentally, just as important, is a different story.
I don't see this fight disappointing anyone. Two of Mexico's finest boxers in any era, I can't see a letdown. I think this will be an instant classic with either a rematch happening or the victor moving on towards a mega clash with the Pacman. The latter being dependent on the legal issues surrounding Manny and the ability of GBP and TR to set aside their differences long enough to make some serious money.
I have always been a huge fan of MAB, but sadly IMO, he no longer posses the skills necessary to outbox or even outslug JMM. He doesn't have enough firepower for a stoppage and he will get countered all night. I see MAB figting cautiously in the early rounds for a boring first few rounds, but a sense of urgency kicks as he loses these early rounds. As he goes for a KD, MAB will get hit by massive counter shots and will hit the canvas, eventually getting stopped in the later rounds. I see a good ol fashion Mexican ring war :)
For what it's worth, I hope MAB proves me wrong and wins the fight.
I think this additude that if you get floored or have any number higher than zero in your loss column means you have been exposed and suck is Indicative of todays throwaway instant results mentality..
It's also indicative that the best fights aren't made IMO. In yesteryears, a loss doesn't necessarily mean an end to one's career or earning potential. Today, a no loss record is a major chip at the bargaining table.
Hard to tell since we really don't know how fast Langford was during his time. From what I've read about Sam, if he was given a shot at the heavyweight title, he would have been champ for a long time. BTW, it's impressive that most writers would list Langford in their p4p list of all time w/o having won a belt. Speaks volumes about his talent. In Bert Sugar's latest edition of "Boxing's Greatest Fighters", Langford comes in at number 16...
Speaks also volumes on racism at the time
Sure does, and in those times, the heavyweight championship of the world was held in high regard, and had tones of racial superiority as well. Reason why there was a mad scramble to find the "great white hope" after Jack won the belt.
